Overview of Villa Buona

What Oliver loves…

  • This villa in Umbria is a short walk (3-5 minutes) from several restaurants and pubs!
  • Gorgeous furnishings from Morocco, Marrakesh and beyond bring life to this 14th century church.
  • If your group is larger, there’s an additional cottage on the estate that can be rented to accommodate 3 more guests.

What you should know…

  • This is not an accessible property, because of the many stone steps leading up to the house.
  • Spello is a quiet village - if you’re looking for a party house, another would be more appropriate.

A 14th century church has found a second life as this modern villa in Umbria. Pale pink stone walls rise above the green countryside outside Spello - this is your holiday oasis. Your hostess, Andrea, has decorated the interior with treasures from her travels (and great taste); everywhere you’ll find eclectic furnishings, rich rugs, and colorful artwork. This sense of fun interplays beautifully with the dignified archways, made of ancient stone.

A gardener and maid are at your service, so you'll have no cares at this holiday villa. The lawned garden is a carefully kept paradise overlooking rolling countryside. Lounge beside the little swimming pool, looking out to the hills beyond (sunset here is a special treat). You'll find romance inside, too; the country kitchen seems like the backdrop of a still life.

This villa nestles against the city walls of Spello, between the gates known as Porta del Mastro and Porta Prato. The cobbled streets of Spello are enchanting, and not usually traversed by tourists. It's most famous for L’Infiorata, a festival in June where the public spaces are adorned with floral street art. The surrounding land is dotted with wineries, providing a true taste of Italian village life!

Interior & Grounds

Villa Interior
Master Bedroom
The master bedroom is situated at the patio level and faces over the garden. It has a king size bed and feels like a luxurious private apartment. The room is fitted with shutters for those who want to sleep late but there is nothing like waking up to a gentle warm morning breeze. The bedroom also offers a lovely all-white, marble-lined bathroom, walk-in storage and clothes hanging space. The suite is calm ideal for a restful holiday with an interesting selection of books and magazines supplied for guests.

Ethnic Bedroom
Set above the master bedroom with dazzling country views. The bedroom has been designed in a less traditional style using textiles and the warm colours inspired by Morocco and India. It is teamed with cool, limed oak floors and white walls. From the studio room a few steps lead up to a lobby off which is the en-suite bathroom with plenty of useful storage cupboards. The modern stylish bathroom has a large power shower.

Garden Bedroom
Accessed directly from the garden and not the house this charming bedroom is a romantic secluded retreat. Furnished with a metal bed from a family home it is decorated simply and comfortably, Designers Guild fabrics in reds and greens providing colour along with artworks bought in Marrakesh. Within the room is a fully equipped shower-room.

Studio
The studio is a large and fascinating mezzanine space reached by a broad stone staircase and lobby off the living room. It is beautifully decorated with one wall retaining the original church figurative painting.
There are oak floors and vaulted stone walls and ceiling. It is a fabulous place to listen to music or just to relax and read. This room can also be used as a fourth bedroom a full size sofa bed available. There is an additional bathroom at the foot of the stairs.

Kitchen
A real home-from-home requires an attractive and well equipped kitchen. Villa Buona offers a light and airy Kitchen in a style reminiscent of Sweden and Provence, but this is not a basic rustic holiday kitchen. Everything from aprons and a wide selection of table linens to fine Riedel wine-glasses and a mighty La Cornue range cooker are supplied.

Living and dining
Subtle lighting, ancient arches and stone work provide a palpable sense of history to the spacious open-plan living and dining room.
Simply decorated with a large cane sofa, a bright Moroccan rug and with a multi-channel television neatly hidden in an old wall cupboard the living area is very comfortable. The dining table with raw silk covered chairs, seating up to 8 people. It is raised just a shallow step above the living area.

Outside Grounds
The Covered Patio
Entering the garden from the street door you are greeted by an outstanding view. Throughout the year guests can relax under the cool ancient vaulted arches which form the outdoor seating and dining area. There is a large table and plenty of comfortable chairs provided. From the patio there is easy access to the kitchen and living room, with a gentle flight of steps down to the garden and pool at a lower level.

The Garden and Swimming Pool
A low wall across the front of the garden provides unobstructed views of the stunning countryside beyond, guest can look forward to enjoying especially wonderful at sunset.

The pool is set back and to the side of the villa, while lush green lawns, cool underfoot, provide plenty of space for sunbathing or entertaining. The garden is planted with roses, olives and cypress trees. It is a quiet contemplative place, ideal for a calm and restful holiday.

Villa Buona Reviews

  • Villa Buona

Posted by Cheryl S on 09/06/2015

Great family get away. Beautiful villa, scenic views, very private setting right in the heart of Spello.

Andrea was a fantastic host and very accommodating with all our needs.

The private chef was outstanding. My only complaint is that we didn't book for a longer stay.

  • Umbria at it's best!

    Posted by anonymous on 16/09/2014

We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Villa Buona. It is a superb villa in a wonderful town in a great part of Italy. The views from the lovely garden and terrace are simply stunning. Spello itself is a delight and it is well worth spending time just wandering about there taking in the sights. As an added bonus, pretty much every one of the restaurants in the town offers extremely high quality food and wine at very reasonable prices! Andrea has done a fantastic job furnishing the villa, and is also a most helpful, informative and charming hostess. We would definitely consider returning, and have no hesitation in recommending the villa to others who wish to visit Umbria.
