For those in search of an enchanting castle retreat, Castello Gubbio is the perfect choice.
It was built in the middle ages to defend the town of Gubbio against Perugia. The castle has retained its defensive character from the outside, but four years of intensive renovation have turned the interior into an extremely welcoming and comfortable house.
The castle is surrounded by a park with century old trees, large lawns and a beautiful pool which looks out over the hilly 1400 acre estate. The estate is signposted with beautiful walks, and in the appropriate season guests can even go truffle hunting with local experts. The owners of the estate are descendants of the family of Napoleon Bonaparte and the castle has been in their family since 1830.

What you should know…
- Breakfast preparation is included most mornings - guests just have to pay for the cost of food and beverages
- If meals are required then an additional deposit is due on arrival for the advance purchase of food and drink - see the "T&Cs" tab for full details

History
In 1391 Melchiorre Montaiti, Lord Magrano, undertook to go against the Noble Antonio da Montefeltro, Lord of Urbino and Gubbio. Magrano was then severely assaulted with the destruction of its mill (which was built again and still exists today) but the soldiers of the Montefeltro family failed to take over the castle.
In 1431 Magrano moved under the jurisdiction of the Dukes of Montefeltro.
Federico da Montefeltro (1422-1482) turned it into his favourite hunting residence. It is said that the Duke was active in the hunting of the fallow deer and wild boars that still populate the residence today. This hunting was always finished with a banquet during which guests appreciated the most precious fruits of this land, particularly the truffle.
In 1600, the ownership of the castle went to the noble family of the Carpegna, a family of bishops, cardinals and Priori of various cities in Umbria and Lazio.
In 1830, Magrano became the property of the family that still today owns it. More specifically, it went to the Princess Giulia Bonaparte, daughter of two first cousins, Zenaide and Carlo Luciano Bonaparte Prince of Canino, who were both nephews of Napoleon.
It is in this charming corner of nature, in this place so full of tradition and history, that guests can spend some nice days of relaxation and entertainment.

Region
Umbria has best of Italy to offer: rolling landscapes, wine, beautiful towns and villages, olive oil, expansive lakes and the food, glorious food. A holiday here can be as lazy, active, cultured and as delicious as you like.
This region is scattered with pretty, picturesque villages, while the area has a rich cultural heritage. From thermal pools to medieval cathedrals and olive oil museum, Umbria has an intriguing amount of history to discover.
Both Rome and Florence are accessible within a day trip, while the closest towns of interest would be Orvieto, the old town which is a fascinating series of winding streets, piazzas and a colourful weekly market.
History lovers will be spoilt - from the first century Roman amphitheatres to the twelfth-century duomos, to the fourteenth-century hilltop fortresses, the glut of remnants from the medieval and Bronze Age that punctuate the region is impressive.

Unforgettable Moments in a Castle
A Dream Italian Getaway with Oliver's Travels: Unforgettable Moments in a Castle
Our recent experience with Oliver's Travels was nothing short of spectacular. We had the pleasure of booking a majestic castle in Italy for a 6-day celebration with 30 of our closest friends and family to commemorate our recent marriage. It was an unforgettable journey, made all the more special by the incredible assistance of Chiara from Oliver's Travels.

Gorgeous villa, great staff
Lovely rooms, beautiful surroundings, great for a large group. Service while on the trip: fantastic! The chef and waiter staff were so accommodating and helpful, we were very sorry to leave them! The food was delicious and the worked so hard to meet our needs. Villa location: gorgeous! Very private with lovely grounds, great walking paths. Staff in the villa: excellent! Cleanliness: spotless! I cannot recommend the castle highly enough. It will be a first rate experience!

I'd come back in a heartbeat
We've just spent one of the most amazing weeks in my life here. Now not all that can be put down to the physical place but it is an awesome place to stay if you can get a large group of friends together. It has an amazing pool and the staff were simply spectacular. As you would expect from a historic building there are many places to explore and even a secret room. I'd stay there again in a heartbeat!
Don't miss out! Reserve now and get a full refund if you change your mind within 48hrs.
