The Galician region is very green and lush with mountains and pine & eucalyptus forests dotted throughout. It has a mild climate and a similar amount of rainfall to the UK but predominantly dry summers. It is a region rich in tradition, culture and history and where many say you can experience the real Spain. The region is great for cycling and hiking and has many routes to choose from. Santiago de Compostela is the capital city of Galicia and is the famous end of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, the city's old town is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is worth trying to make room in your itinerary to explore this beautiful historical city.

Villa Abeledo is located in a quiet and beautiful rural area in the municipality of Curtis, the closest town is Teixeiro which is only an 8-minute drive away, here you will find a selection of restaurants, supermarkets and shops, there is also a train station. The villa is located 40 minutes from A Coruña Airport.

Riazor beach located in Orzan Bay and is a 45-minute drive away. This popular white sandy beach with blue waters is a great place to spend the day, there are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from in this area. This beach is popular for surfing, sailing and windsurfing, the water can be a little choppy but there are lifeguards on duty. The most visited beach in Galicia is Cathedrals Beach known locally as As Catedrais, this famous and stunning area is located 1 hours’ drive from the villa and is well worth the journey. This beach gets its name from the large arched rock formations along the coast. Walking through these giant natural archways is something you won't forget, just remember it can only be accessed in low tide.

Galician cuisine is quite different from what you would expect to find in Spain, it also has some Portuguese influence due to their proximity. On the menu expect to find a lot of seafood and hearty stews. Here are a few delicious examples for you to try out: Empanadas Gallega may remind you a little of a samosa, it is a crunchy pastry usually filled with onions, garlic, peppers, paprika combined with meat or seafood. Pulpo a la Gallega, is a simple dish of boiled octopus cut in to pieces served with olive oil and smoked paprika, these delicious tender pieces melt in your mouth. Caldo Gallega is a dish eaten most typically during the colder months. This tasty stew consists of pork, chorizo, potatoes, white beans and greens. If you are looking for something sweet then try the Tarta de Santiago, this dense but moist dessert is made with almonds, flour, eggs and sugar. This sweet treat is usually finished off on top with powdered sugar in the shape of the famous cross of St. James.

About the Region & Getting There

About Galicia

Like many parts of Spain, Galicia has its very own identity that has remained intact through its regional dialect and distinguishing culture. Although Galicia is recognised for its holy traditions, we urge budding tourists to also consider its astonishing green countryside & rivers and its UNESCO World Heritage sites. Occasionally you may even hear the gentle tootling of bagpipes, known locally as the Galician Gaita, along this northern corner of the Iberian Peninsula.

You're likely to fly into Santiago de Compostela, which is the capital of Galicia and is probably best known for the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage and its route. Many of the travellers embark on this journey by foot and tend to be mesmerised by this fine city at the end of their trek. Casco Viejo, or the Old Town, is a good place to end or even start your holiday. This area of the city is blessed with markets, restaurants, bars and buildings from a bygone era. After exhausting yourself in the busyness of the city, take a day trip to Praia de Rodas, on the gorgeous Cíes Islands. These small islands, accessible by boat from Vigo, Baiona, or Cangas, have been noted as having some of the best beaches in the world. It has to be seen to be believed!

Galicia is divided into four key regions: A Coruña, Lugo, Ourense and our favourite – Pontevedra. A Galician proverb states that 'Pontevedra gives water to travellers'. We firmly believe this to be true, as this particular part of Galicia has everything a traveller could need for an unforgettable experience and it almost feels like this city is constantly giving back. Whilst you holiday in Pontevedra you will realise that days are structured around mealtime. And why wouldn't they be? With some of the best seafood you will experience in Spain and the noteworthy Albariño wine, you may notice your jeans feeling a little tighter toward the end of your holiday. You will be glad to know that your waistline need not be a cause for concern though! Pontevedra is blessed with some of the best hiking trails, medieval monasteries, estuaries, and valleys within Spain. Don't forget about the coastline either! Rarely you will you find so many empty beaches, so make the most of this privacy and just embrace the nature around you.

Galicia is still an unspoilt part of the world. It has everything a diverse group of friends & family need to have a glorious adventure.

Getting There

Galicia is served by either Santiago de Compostela Airport, A Coruña Airport, or Vigo Airport. Various train lines connect the main cities and towns of Galicia to other destinations in Northern and Central Spain. Hop on and enjoy the view from your comfy seat; there's even a Galician Tourist Train pass! This discounted rail pass gives you access to various rail routes created by the Galician Regional Government and based on key elements of the region. Follow the Lighthouse Route along the northern coastline and stop to admire the lighthouses and gorgeous sea views, or hop on and follow one of the Ribeira Sacra Wine Routes to visit the lovely towns and wineries where acclaimed Galician wines are made and enjoyed. Check out the government website to grab your pass and plan your trip!

From the UK:
Direct flights are available from London with easyJet, Ryanair, Vueling, and many others. Although, travellers should be aware that Vigo Airport only receives domestic flights, so a stopover is needed if you wish to travel to this airport. Chartered flights are also available from several other UK airports.

This rustic and spacious villa is a fantastic place for a family holiday. The large communal open living space gives you a chance to spend quality time together and the amount of bedrooms and bathrooms allows everyone to have their own privacy and area to relax. The garden offers ample space to play and run around, there is a private swimming pool for splashing about in and a playground to have lots of fun in.

If you fancy a family day out at the beach then Orzan Bay in A Coruña is only a 45-minute drive away, here you will find some of the most popular beaches with plenty of activities, restaurants and cafes. The sea here can be a little choppy but there are lifeguards on duty. If you want a beach with calmer waters for the little ones then Playa Santa Cristina is the same distance away. This sandy beach has a promenade to walk along with plenty of restaurants and cafes to choose from. You can also hire peddle boats for an entertaining time on the water.

Other fun things to do in A Coruña include Aquarium Finisterrae which focuses on Galicia's coast and waters, here there are interactive exhibits, an underwater hall and plenty of marine life to explore and admire. The Domus museum focuses on mankind and is full of fun interactive displays and is a great place for curious children to learn.

If you are up for a more energetic day then Aquapark Cerceda is a 45-minute drive away. This family friendly water park offers a day of fun where kids can try out all the different slides and swimming pools, including a wave pool. There are also great areas for smaller children with swimming pools, smaller slides, water features and playgrounds. There is a large green area to set up for the day with facilities to rent sunbeds and umbrellas and several places to get refreshments.

Lovely house, lovely host, lovely welcoming touches, lovely holiday!

  • Would Return!

    on 25/11/2019

What a great experience! After walking in the rain all day our host met us and invited us all in to dry off by the fire! She went way out of her way to help us get settled in!

  • Such a lovely holiday!

    on 11/11/2019

Our hostess could not have been more gracious! We arrived in a torrential downpour, lasting six hours through our camino walk, and there she was, waiting for us, with the fire place going, and inviting us in without worry about our wet coats andmuddy shoes! To top it all, she ran a couple of our group to the grocery store! And, yes, our dinner was awesome! This place is the real deal!
