This four-bedroom villa sits in Janas, close to the charming town of Sintra, and has ample space for a family or group of friends. Surrounded by pine trees and close to a sandy beach, Villa Eufemia is a bright and cheerful place. Whitewashed walls, swathes of natural light and local artefacts make it an attractive and homely place.
On the ground floor, an open-plan living area is a relaxing space with huge patio doors that bring the outside in. The lounge is the perfect spot to unwind with its plump sofas and chairs, mahogany furniture, and colourful artwork on the walls. There’s even an open fireplace to keep things cosy on cooler nights. Overlooking the lounge is a dining table, with seating for six people, and a separate kitchen kitted out with microwave, dishwasher and cooking utensils.
Also on this floor are four bedrooms. The rooms feature a mix of double and twin beds with a bunk bed room also having two additional pull-out beds that the kids will love. All the rooms are spacious, uncluttered, and breezy, and the double bedroom boasts an en-suite bathroom with a tub. There’s also a shower room and family bathroom on this floor. From the ground floor, a staircase leads up to a mezzanine area where comfortable sofas and chairs invite you to relax with a good book or enjoy a game at the card table.
Outside, there’s an attractive blue swimming pool, a neat garden dotted with sun loungers and a shady terrace with a table overlooked by trees. The villa is set in a peaceful location yet within walking distance of a supermarket and restaurants. It’s also a 5-minute drive to Praia das Maçãs beach and less than a 10-minute drive to Portugal’s famous surfing beach, Praia Grande. The villa is ideally located for outdoor activity, with tennis courts, walking trails, and bodyboarding just some of the activities on offer nearby.

Location
About the surrounding area of Villa EufemiaVilla Mara is just a 10-minutes drive from Praia Grande, the largest beach in the Sintra region. It’s a sandy beach and a peaceful place for topping up your tan. The rolling waves also make it a popular spot with surfers and bodyboarders, and you can rent a board at one of the surf rental stores when the ocean waves are too intense; head to the seawater swimming pool located on the northern side of the beach. The pool overlooks the Atlantic and is over 100 metres long. Open from May to September, it’s perfect for families and has a designated area for children.
History lovers will also enjoy marvelling at the huge cliffs that rise up from the beach. These cliffs are home to fossilised dinosaur footprints dating back 100 million years, and a winding staircase provides access to the footprints, although access is limited due to rockfall. Just south of Praia Grande is Praia da Adraga, a sandy little cove and a local favourite. It’s a 15-minute drive from the villa, or for a walk in nature, follow the trail from Praia Grande through the pine forest to Praia da Adraga.
Also worth a visit is Cabo da Roca, a 20-minute drive away. Known as the edge of the world due to it being the most western point in Portugal and all of Europe, it is a stunning place to watch the sunset over the roaring Atlantic Ocean. There’s also a lighthouse and cafe here and plenty of hiking and cycling trails, so you can also discover the dramatic landscape on your bike or foot. While the coastline offers some great beaches and hiking trails, head east to Sintra and discover historic buildings, palaces and a Moorish castle with breathtaking views over Lisbon.
Just a 15-minute drive from the villa, be sure to visit the old town and the atmospheric Palacio Nacional, considered to be one of Europe’s finest palaces. Afterwards, head to Quinta da Regaleira, an elaborate estate with a beautiful garden featuring fountains, terraces, and grottoes, then stop for a queijadas da Sintra (sweet cheese pastry cake) at one of the local cafes.

THE REGION

In the environs of Colares are the beaches of Praia das Maças, Praia Grande and Adraga, and the typical village of Azenhas do Mar, with its whitewashed houses inset in the side of a cliff.
Colares is also a demarcated wine-growing region, producing the very popular and increasingly rare Colares wine, which can be tasted at the Adega Regional, in a very beautiful building in the town centre.

Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesVilla Eufemia is an ideal place to enjoy family time. Young and old children will love splashing in the pool, soaking up the sun, and dining outdoors with meals cooked on the barbeque. Under a 10-minute drive from the villa is Praia Grande, a beautiful sandy beach where children can fly kites and build castles on the shore. Older children can also try their hand at surfing and bodyboarding, and there are plenty of surf stores where you can rent equipment. The waters here are choppy and chilly, but there’s a huge seawater swimming pool at the northern end of the beach where children can swim safely. There’s a good selection of restaurants and bars here too. The beach is also home to some dramatic cliff faces, and dinosaur lovers can enjoy the thrill of discovering fossilised dinosaur footprints in the cliff face.
Further along the coastline is Cabo da Roca (20 minutes), set on the edge of Sintra’s national park and the most western point in all of Europe. Children can discover the lighthouse and listen to the thundering sound of the Atlantic waves crashing against the rugged cliffs. For historical attractions galore, head to Sintra. It’s a 15-minute drive from the villa, and it has an abundance of palaces and castles that conjure up images of knights, princesses, and even dragons. Stroll through the old town with its narrow, winding streets and be sure to stop at Quinta da Regaleira, a neo-gothic mansion with enchanting gardens. Children will love the fountains and grottoes, and the more adventurous can explore the inside of a well. Enter through a door, then walk down the spiral stairway to the foot of the well. Kids will love walking through the tunnel that eventually resurfaces at the edge of a lake. Other delights include the Sintra National Palace, with its frescos of swans and magpies, and the Museu do Brinquedo, with its fascinating toy collection, including papier-mache cars and wooden trams.
