The resort has everything visitors are likely to need, with lots of restaurants and bars with outdoor terraces, supermarkets and other essential amenities. Protaras has lots of amazing beaches with many offering water-sports and organised sunbathing areas.

Protaras offers all sorts of tours to its visitors, and these are a great way to get to know the area better. Among them are Jeep safaris, boat trips, catamaran cruises and guided food tours. Cypriot wines, honeys, olives and the like are well worth discovering, and the tastings should give you a good idea of what you want to take home with you. Locally, you can also try many water-sports, with diving, jet-skiing, kayaking, snorkelling and more.

South of Protaras, Cape Greco is a wonderful location which draws many visitors. Famed for its sea caves and Blue Lagoon with its crystal clear waters, it really is idyllic. If you can find a time when it’s quiet, you will be able to appreciate it all the more. Cape Greco area also offers beautiful countryside that’s ideal for walking and cycling, as well as scenic picnic spots and hiking trails.

Nearby Ayia Napa has a number of interesting historic attractions to see, including a 16th-century monastery and the Makronissos Tombs, only uncovered as recently as 1989. There is also a fascinating museum based around the sea, the Thalassa Museum, complete with reconstructed shipwreck and life-size Greek ship. Look out for the Sculpture Park too, an interesting installation that’s one of the area’s cultural high points.

Ayia Napa is also awesome for families, thanks to its multiple amusement parks – including a big water-park. As well as WaterWorld, Parko Paliatso and Dolfins, they can enjoy sea-faring adventures on the Black Pearl pirate ship and Yellow Submarine.

It’s likely you will have flown into Larnaca Airport, and it’s worth making time to visit the city. With a marina, castle and all sorts of entertainment venues from cinemas to bowling alleys, there is no shortage of things to see and do in Cyprus’ third city. Don’t miss the magnificent Salt Lake, where birds including flamingos can be found, or the Camel Park with 60 camels and dozens more animals too.

Region

Perched on Cyprus’s stunning southeastern coastline, Protaras is a Mediterranean jewel boasting sky-blue seas, sun-soaked beaches, and laid-back touches of traditional charm. What is more, Protaras’ serrated coastline of coves and promontories means there is no shortage of shallow, serene bays that are ideal for families, swimming, and watersports.

The famed Fig Tree Bay, with its shallow, protected water and golden sands is the most popular beach, and regularly listed among the best in Europe. Named after the lone fig tree set amidst its pristine sands, this quaint inlet is a picturesque retreat for sunbathers and snorkelers alike, but it’s also only the beginning of Protaras’ delightful qualities.

If you’re looking for a slightly quieter spot to sunbathe and dip your toes in the calm, Mediterranean waters, make your way south across the Fig Tree Peninsula to find a series of bays, including Green Bay which is a laid-back and excellent spot for snorkeling where you might even be lucky enough to see a sea turtle!

But snorkeling only scratches the surface of Protaras’ spectacular coastline, as it is a haven for scuba divers of all levels of experience. The region boasts a number of fantastic dive sights including the Green Bay Caves, the wrecks of the Liberty and the Nemesis, and the wonderful submerged gallery of statues which is close enough to shore to be accessible to divers and snorkelers alike. But if getting your feet wet isn’t your bag, not to fear, the coastline is equally wonderful to explore on a private boat tour. Tours explore highlights such as Cape Greco, Konnos Bay and the lovely Blue Lagoon.

Anyone looking to put their hiking boots to good use will revel in Protaras’s sublime selection of hiking options, from the rugged Cape Greco National Park to the unique Paralimni Lake – a natural saltwater wetland area swamped with migratory birds including herons, ducks, and even pink flamingoes. Cape Grego National Park is well known for its breathtaking landscapes and boasts several hiking trails. What is more, the Park offers a bevy of swimming spots so make sure to bring your bathers.

Far from limited to natural wonders, Protaras is also a culinary adventure. The town’s tavernas are brimming with grilled halloumi and souvlaki, and serve as the perfect spots to sit and relax as twilight turns to evening and the strum of bouzouki music serenades the streets and promenades. But don’t get too comfortable, because the night won’t end there. Protaras has a lively nightlife which centres on The Strip where numerous bars and clubs are open until late into the night, offering plenty of music and entertainment to keep the party going.

With its splendid assortment of natural wonders from serene bays to rugged landscapes, and no shortage of activities, attractions, and alluring culinary delights, Protaras is a picturesque location for a perfect vacation whether you’re a young family or a group of firm friends.

Taking the kids to Protaras? There’s a wide variety of things for them to do and see. Protaras offers an aquarium, mini-golf and playgrounds alongside magnificent beaches, and there are lots of restaurants, cafés and fast-food joints around the place. You can often find special events going on too, like outdoor movie screenings.

For some gorgeous scenery and maybe even some swimming, get down to Cape Greco to see the sea caves and the Blue Lagoon. You can take an organised boat trip there to make sure you don’t miss anything. The beautiful Forest Park provides the ideal setting for a picnic or an invigorating walk in the sunshine.

All sorts of sea-faring adventures are available around the coast. As well as scuba-diving and snorkelling, there are dolphin-spotting trips and sight-seeing cruises in glass-bottomed boats. In Ayia Napa, you will also find the Black Pearl pirate ship, which adds pirate fun to its sailings, and the Yellow Submarine boat trip with off-boat swimming and fish feeding.

Also in Ayia Napa, there is the Parko Paliatso Luna Park, a big amusement park with loads of rides from tame to terrifying. More suited to the youngest kids, Dolfins Luna Park has gentle rides like carousels and a mini-train, as well as an indoor play area. The WaterWorld water-park is packed with wet and wild rides and water-slides, and has some calmer parts for chilling out in the water too.

Close to all these are lots of places to eat and drink, and many more attractions including a go-kart track that’s ideal for teenagers. Among other places worth seeing in Ayia Napa are the Thalassa Museum, dedicated to the sea, and the intriguing Sculpture Park. About 20 minutes from the town, you can also find the CyHerbia Botanical Park & Labyrinth, complete with maze. This beautiful park also hosts regular events that kids will love, including a Fairy Festival in spring, and Halloween pumpkin carvings.

Also don’t miss the Camel Park in Mazotos, just outside Larnaca. The biggest park of its kind in Europe, it has 60 camels but also llamas, ostriches, ponies, lemurs and all sorts of other animals. There are many other attractions there too, with bumper cars, a cinema, hall of mirrors, trampoline and picnic area among them – enough to really make a day of it.

When you’re in Larnaca, be sure to check out the beautiful Salt Lake for a little quiet time, or the K Max centre for full-on fun – there’s a big indoor playground, multiplex cinema, bowling alley and lots more, conveniently all under one roof
