Privlaka is an attractive resort which lies around 18km from Zadar, situated on a peninsula to the north. With the sea on three sides, Privlaka is a great destination for beach lovers and also divers – with lots of caves, shipwrecks and sites of archaeological interest to explore. The lengthy, sandy beach of Sabunike is the largest in the area, but there are many more including Loznica, Škrapavac and Skoblari.

The town offers good opportunities for water sports, as well as beach bars and a good selection of restaurants and cafés serving Dalmatian cuisine. The pretty fishing harbour is a favourite hangout, and cultural events will give even more of a flavour of local life, with ‘Fishermen’s Nights’ among them.

It’s well worth spending some time in Zadar, as the city includes a fascinating Old Town with a variety of significant landmarks. The Roman Forum is alongside the Archbishop’s Palace and the Church of St Donat, and the Cathedral of St Anastasia is another must-see, providing incredible views across the region if you make the climb up the bell tower.

The Museum of Ancient Glass is one of Zadar’s highlights, featuring more than 5,000 pieces, many of them from Roman times. Situated in Cosmacendi Palace, the museum enjoys lovely views over Jazine Harbour, and offers workshops in glassmaking.

While the Museum of Ancient Glass is a relatively recent addition to the city, the Archaeological Museum was founded in 1832, making it the second-oldest museum in Croatia. With a permanent prehistoric exhibition, this excellent museum houses more than 100,000 artefacts.

Zadar is also known for a pair of creative installations from Croatian architect, Nikola Bašić. Head to the Sun Salutation at sunset to see the glorious solar-powered display light up glass panels beneath your feet. The Sea Organ is nearby and creates atmospheric melodies using the power of the waves.

There’s plenty of space to relax in Vladimira Nazora Park, which sits between the Old Town and the city’s modern area, or the nearby Five Wells Square. You can enjoy a stroll around Foša Harbour, along the city walls or through People’s Square – considered the centre of life in the city since medieval times.

Region

The Zadar region, anchored by the vibrant city of Zadar, boasts a rich history, breathtaking natural beauty, and a cultural tapestry that dates back millennia. Situated along Croatia's stunning Dalmatian coast, and shaped by the dramatic Velebit mountain range, Zadar is a unique destination offering a captivating array of experiences.

Zadar city is known for its ancient Roman ruins, white sand beach, and rugged coastline. Take a wander through the world of the Old Town's labyrinthine streets, which are a wonder to explore, brimming with historical treasures. Make sure to stop at the Church of St. Donatus, an architectural masterpiece and a prominent example of Byzantine construction and one of the most famous pre-Romanesque churches in Croatia.

Zadar's architectural prowess isn't limited to its historical buildings; it also embraces modern art installations. The Sea Organ, designed by architect Nikola Bašić, is an ingenious creation consisting of underwater pipes and chambers that produce hauntingly beautiful sounds as the waves of the Adriatic Sea wash over it. It's a serene place to watch the sunset, often accompanied by an equally impressive light show from the nearby Greeting to the Sun installation, which comes alive with vibrant colours after dusk.

The city's waterfront promenade, dotted with cafes, bars, and restaurants, provides the perfect setting for relaxed evenings. You can pass away the hours while savouring a leisurely meal and enjoying the sea views with watch boats sailing past. Don't forget to sample the local cuisine, which includes fresh seafood, pasticada (a traditional beef stew), and the world-famous Pag cheese. Pair your meal with a glass of local wine or rakija, a strong fruit brandy, to complete the culinary experience.

The Zadar region is renowned for its proximity to a collection of stunning islands, each with its own unique character. Ugljan, often referred to as the "Green Island," is known for its lush vegetation and charming fishing villages. The island offers a serene escape from the bustle of city life, with numerous opportunities for hiking, cycling, and exploring unspoiled beaches.

Dugi Otok, or the "Long Island," is a true gem of unspoiled natural beauty. The island is known for its rugged coastline, pristine coves, and the famous Saharun Beach, with its white sands and crystalclear waters. It’s also home to Telascica Nature Park, a protected area that encompasses stunning cliffs, saltwater lakes, and a diverse range of flora and fauna.

Back on the mainland, and just a couple of hours out of the city you’ll find one of the most renowned natural attractions in Croatia, Plitvice Lakes. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the park is a land of cascading waterfalls, interconnected emerald lakes, and lush forests, with a network of well-maintained trails that guide visitors through this natural wonder. Wooden boardwalks allow you to get up close to the waterfalls, making it a family-friendly destination.

The Zadar region offers more than just natural beauty. The local markets, such as Zadar's Green Market, provide an opportunity to immerse yourself in Croatian culture. Here, you can explore stalls filled with fresh produce, local crafts, and artisanal products, experiencing the flavours and craftsmanship of the region. Zadar is also home to a variety of unique traditions and cultural festivals. Local celebrations, like the annual regatta of traditional boats or performances of 'Klapa' a cappella singing are both integral parts of the region's cultural identity.

The Zadar region is a microcosm of Croatia's diverse and enchanting way of life, with something to offer everyone that visits. It's a place where history, nature, and culture converge to create a harmonious and multifaceted destination. Whether you're hiking through national parks, swimming near waterfalls, exploring ancient cities, or savouring traditional cuisine, the Zadar region promises an unforgettable experience for all. To visit Zadar is to step into the heart of Croatia and experience its multifaceted charm.

Best Suited For: All Ages

The many beaches of Privlaka are just part of the appeal of this area to younger visitors. The coast has much more – the idyllic island of Vir lies just across the bridge from Privlaka and includes the ruins of a 16th-century fortress which offers some amazing sea views, while opportunities to enjoy a meal together in the open air are endless.

During summer, there’s a lot of fun to be had at Buffalo Bill City, a Wild West-style park about 20 minutes outside Privlaka, in Vrsi. It’s an all-American affair with a replica of a cowboy town, Tex-Mex food and even a museum of Coca-Cola memorabilia. In the direction of Zadar, you will also find a donkey sanctuary, Farma Dar-Mar, and an adventure park, Teambuilding, with zip-lines, climbing walls and more. At Petrcane Beach, about 10 minutes from here, there is also a small water park with on-sea inflatables.

Zadar city has a raft of attractions that kids will love. They can climb the bell tower at the Cathedral of St Anastasia, walk the City Walls or pop into one of the interesting museums. Vladimira Nazora Park is the place to go for a quick picnic near the centre of town, or you can all enjoy a bit of people-watching on People’s Square – this hub of activity is the beating heart of Zadar.

Escape rooms, playrooms, movie theatres and the Zadar Puppet Theatre provide yet more options for kids of all ages, and the youngest will love riding the mini-train which runs through the streets. Zadar has its own Museum of Illusions, or you could take a look around the city with virtual reality headsets.

For something a little different, there are glassblowing workshops at the Museum of Ancient Glass, or – if you head out of the city to Nin – you can discover the story of salt at the town’s saltworks.

Back in Zadar, don’t miss the Sun Saluation and Sea Organ. The Sun Salutation uses solar energy to power a spectacular light show, while the Sea Organ creates wave-generated tones in stone stairs which lead down to the ocean. Both are quite unlike anything your kids will have seen before.

If your kids love getting out and about amongst nature, they couldn’t be in a better place. Privlaka is within easy reach of many amazing National Parks, including rugged Paklenica, Krka and the islands of Kornati. One of Croatia’s most popular attractions, Plitvice Lakes, is stunning and is around 130km away – it will be a truly unforgettable experience.

Very nice location. We very much liked our stay in the house. Lots of things to do nearby. Zadar is just 20 minutes away by car. The Krka national park and waterfall are 60 minutes away. The house and pool were very clean. Our host was very kind and helpful. Wifi is good enough for work and Netflix.
