Location
About the surrounding area of Villa MarielleAround 25km from Croatia’s second city, Split, the historic town of Omiš is known for its stunning fortresses and pirate history, but it can also offer wonderful beaches and a varied water-sports scene centred on the River Cetina. High-energy activities like these draw many visitors to Omiš – you could try canyoning, boating, rafting, canoeing and the like, or take an unforgettable zip-line ride across the canyon itself.
Beach lovers need not venture far from the centre of Omiš, with the long, sandy Velika Plaza is ideal for families. The pebble beaches of Brzet and Slavinj are also a short walk away. Head west towards Split, or east towards Makarska, and there are plenty more beaches to choose from, many of them Blue Flag rated. Taking a boat trip out to the islands of Brač, Hvar and Šolta will give you lots more options, and these stunning isles offer much more besides.
Omiš’ 13th-century Mirabella fortress impresses with its stunning views as far as Brač, and those from 15th-century Starigrad are just as good. Another popular vantage point is the site of the Mila Gojsalič statue, located high in the hills around 5km from the centre of town, which offers an amazing view over the canyon.
With so many other stunning destinations within reach, Omiš makes a great base. To the west, Split has world-class landmarks like Diocletian’s Palace and the Cathedral of St Domnius to see, while upscale Makarska, a similar distance east, is the jewel of Makarska Riviera, backed with by the fantastic hiking terrain of the Biokovo mountains.
Split rivals Dubrovnik as a cultural hub – it’s home to the Croatian National Theatre, the Meštrović Gallery and the Split Gallery of Fine Arts among others. You can take it easy on the glamorous Riva waterfront or enjoy the café terraces of the city’s landmark squares, while the expansive Marjan Forest Park is a fine place to stretch your legs amongst nature. As a rather hilly park, it offers a wonderful outlook on the Adriatic.
An even bigger place to experience the natural beauty of Croatia is the Krka National Park, about one hour’s drive from Split – it’s especially well known for its beautiful waterfalls. Another great city for a day out is Trogir, about 50 minutes’ drive from Omiš. With a UNESCO World Heritage medieval centre and an attractive waterfront, it has much of the charm of Split but is less crowded. For the most spectacular views in town, head for St Lawrence Cathedral and climb the lofty bell tower.

Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesOmiš is a great place for kids and teens. There are endless activities to try, like hiking, cycling, rafting or canoeing. They can discover canyoning, paragliding or scuba-diving, or perhaps go horse-riding, paintballing, or zip-lining 150m above the Cetina Canyon. Children of 7 years or above can take part in that adventure, with experienced guides to accompany them.
There are many lovely beaches in the Omiš area, including the 800m Velika Plaza – a good family choice where there are cafés and lots of facilities. Omiš is a good place to grab a family meal out – you can find all sorts of fare, including pizzas and other favourites. For great food and an unforgettable location, the Flintstones-themed restaurant, Kremenko, high up in the mountains, is sure to be popular with the youngest of the family.
The city of Split offers all sorts of family attractions, including an aquarium, a semi-submarine, Segway tours and the big indoor play centre at Poljud Stadium. Froggyland, Split’s unforgettable frog museum, is surely a must, and they can take a beach break at Znjan Beach, with its paddle boats, trampolines and bouncy castles. The large Marjan Forest Park, found west of the city centre, is another Split favourite. This hilly park will burn off lots of energy and offers rewarding sea views.
A bit further than Omiš and Split, but more than worth the journey, is the Krka National Park. With its famous seven waterfalls, this big park is a fantastic outdoor destination, offering activities like cycling and swimming.
The city of Šibenik is a great place to be in June/July, as it hosts the excellent International Children’s Festival – this well-established festival brings all sorts of activities and entertainment to Šibenik, from music and dance performances to children’s theatre and street parades. The city is also the home of the Solaris Aqua Park and an Aquarium Terrarium filled with colourful creatures, while teenagers may also enjoy the city’s annual Terraneo music festival.
