Location
About the surrounding area of Villa EtesiaMarusici is a lovely, tranquil village between Omis and Makarska. With gorgeous, clear, shallow water, the beach is perfect for families and the village a delight for those wanting a quiet holiday amongst beautiful landscapes and seascapes. With a sleepy Dalmation atmosphere, beautiful pine woods and the sounds of cicadas and the sea waves, visitors will relax and unwind. The village boasts a grocery shop, several cafe bars and restaurants serving delicious Dalmatian dishes. With the Cetina River close by, visitors enjoy thrilling river activities as well as gourmet dining and a fabulous nightlife in Omis and Makarska. You can also explore the mountain areas and the Biokovo Natural Park.
Just down the coast towards Makarska is the delightful, historical village of Baska Voda. It is small and peaceful with a port and a popular beach. Once a humble fishing village, its beach, pine woods and lovely setting have made it a favourite with families. Numerous souvenir shops, friendly cafes and cosy restaurants line the pretty promenade, filled with the sound of music and laughter. The quaint villages of Bast and Topici are known for their artisanal cheese, prosciutto and bread. You will also enjoy Promajna and the little fisherman’s village of Bratus.
Omis is known as the City of Pirates, situated at the mouth of the Cetina River. The town is home to many churches, the 13th century Fortress Mirabella and the 15th century Fortress Starigrad, excellent shops and a renowned selection of gourmet restaurants serving fresh, locally caught fish and speciality smoked ham. The Klapa Festival in summer is a wonderful event with capella singing in churches and squares in the old town.
For an action-packed adventure you can head to the Cetina River. The amazing calcareous canyon is the ideal place for canyoning with its cliff face reaching up to 180 metres and a warren of tunnels, waterfalls and lakes. Extreme canyoning with experienced instructors and professional alpine gear involves descending down the Gubavica Waterfall. You can also challenge yourselves on the incredible zipline that crosses the canyon 150 metres off the ground. For something more sedate, you can paddle down the pretty river in canoes or kayaks enjoying the breathtaking natural scenery and perhaps a picnic by the side of the river. Just north of the village of Kucice, you can ride in giant inflatable donuts and descend down the small river rapids. Starting at Pensici and finishing at Radmanove Mlinice, you can have a day to remember family white water rafting. You can also soar high above the river and town from Imber on a paragliding trip.
It is easy to visit the islands of Hvar and Brac. On Brac, Zlatni Rat Beach is one of Croatia’s best beaches and adorns many Croatia posters. Brac Island is blessed with stunning scenery. The island is famous for its very attractive, white stone which was used to build the White House in Washington. Brac is also famous for its ‘buhavica’ olive oil, cheese, wine, honey and wine. The Stina Winery on the waterfront at Bol is lovely and the Prosec, a little like Australian muscat, is delicious! Brac definitely worth a visit, as is the glittering and vibrant Hvar.

The Dalmatian coast is a veritable treasure trove of stunning landscapes and historic towns, and Omis, situated halfway between the famous port city of Split and the energetic town of Maksarka, is no exception. With its rich history, scenic backdrop, and a plethora of attractions, Omis stands out as a unique and captivating destination for those seeking to explore the charm of Croatia. The town's history is deeply intertwined with its dramatic geographical setting, which is dominated by the imposing Cetina River Canyon and the Mosor Mountain Range.
The old town of Omis, with its narrow cobblestone streets and stone houses, is a place where history and culture converge. It’s a charming place to explore on foot and soak up the local way of life. There are a number of historic churches that you’ll come across while exploring - the Church of St. Michael, the Church of St. Peter, and the Church of St. Rocco, which all showcase intricate architectural details and a sense of reverence. The old town is also home to an abundance of restaurants, cafes, and local shops, it’s an excellent spot to savour authentic Croatian dishes and find unique souvenirs.
One of the most prominent historical attractions in the town is the Mirabella Fortress, often called Peovica. Perched high on a rocky outcrop, this fortress was built during the 13th century and was used as a hideout by the notorious Omis pirates who terrorised the Adriatic Sea. Today, visitors can climb up the steep path to the fortress and enjoy panoramic views of the town, the coast, and the surrounding landscapes.
Omis boasts a pristine stretch of coastline with a variety of beaches, each catering to different tastes. One of the most popular is the sandy beach at the mouth of the Cetina River, offering calm waters perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Adventurous spirits may prefer the pebbly beach of Brzet, known for its perfect conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Just a short drive from Omis, there's the small village of Stanici, which is renowned for its unspoiled beaches and crystal-clear waters. It's a serene place to relax and escape the crowds often found in more touristy locations.
The Cetina River is a defining feature of Omis, and one of the most exhilarating activities here is to take a rafting excursion along its emerald waters. The river cuts through the impressive Cetina Canyon, creating a thrilling white-water rafting experience that appeals to adventure seekers and nature lovers alike. The journey offers panoramic views of the rugged cliffs, lush forests, and the charming villages that dot the landscape.
The nearby Biokovo Nature Park is an outstanding natural attraction. The Biokovo Mountain Range, part of the Dinaric Alps, offers incredible hiking opportunities, with well-marked trails leading to panoramic viewpoints where you can marvel at the Adriatic Sea and the islands scattered along the coast. The juxtaposition of the rugged mountain terrain and the azure waters is simply stunning and will leave a lasting impression.
The history, natural beauty, and cultural vitality of Omis combine to create a destination that is rich in character and charm. Whether you're seeking adventure on the Cetina River, exploring the medieval fortresses, or simply savouring the local cuisine, Omis has something to offer every traveller who ventures to this utterly enchanting corner of the Dalmatian coast.

Best Suited For: All AgesVilla Etesia is a fabulous, contemporary pick for a family holiday. The villa is incredibly spacious with an excellent swimming pool and wellness suite. Marusici enjoys a very safe beach with shallow, warm water and a few beach bars. There are other amazing beaches along the Omis Riviera and the Makarska Riviera. Towards Makarska, Brela and Baska Voda are excellent beaches. Markarska is very popular for its ice-cream parlours, beaches, harbour and the Makarska Observatory where children can observe the clear skies and planets through the telescope. There are special steps for small children. Usually there are clear skies and you can see Mars, Saturn and even the moon! Boat trips can be taken from Makarska’s harbour to the Croatian islands.
The Cetina River is a fantastic water playground for children and adults alike. It is incredibly beautiful and perfect for walking or picnics, as well as swimming, rock climbing, jumping off rocks into emerald pools, rafting, kayaking, riding on inflatables and ziplining. On a 150m high steel wire, visitors can zipline at speeds up to 65km an hour over 2km. Older children can try their hand at canyoning or paragliding. Although paragliding is an extreme sport, there are tandem flights so younger guests can enjoy it.
Harry Potter fans will love visiting Split. They will recognise the cellar in the Diocletian’s Palace where Deanerys kept her dragons. Climbing to the top of the bell tower of St Domnius Cathedral is also very popular. It boasts the best view of Split. A visit and picnic at Klis Fortress, on the hillside overlooking Split, is a good day out for the family. It was one of the filming locations for Game of Thrones. Marjan Hill offers promenades, nature paths, beautiful vistas, playgrounds, bird and rare plant watching and the tiny Split zoo. There is a little tourist train from the Split National Theatre to visit many of the local attractions. Split’s Magic City is an indoor playroom, ideal if you have a wet day.
The Krka National Park is quite a drive from the villa but it is a totally amazing place to visit. Children love swimming, taking the boat rides, standing under spring water waterfalls and jumping off rocks! Don’t forget to take your swimming costumes! The scenery and especially the waterfalls are absolutely stunning. There are actually 5 official entrances to the park, the two main ones being Skradin and Lozovac.
For more zipline fun you can head to ZipLine Tucepi, just south of Makarska. It is fantastic for an afternoon out with children and can easily be combined with a beach trip. Young children can ride tandem with the zip line guide. The 6 steel cables stretch across the beautiful canyon. Flying along at high speeds in this wonderful natural countryside is so thrilling, if a little scary!
The sensational Plitvice Lakes National Park was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979. The park’s sixteen stunning lakes are inter-connected by a series of stunning waterfalls. Visitors enjoy jumping into the fresh water, standing under waterfalls, the stunning scenery and hiking.
