Location
About the surrounding area of Villa LigaMakarska is located in the Split-Dalmatia county on the Adriatic coast. Just 37 miles southeast of Split, the town is surrounded by the Biokovo Nature Park which forms a breath-taking mountain backdrop to the town. Surrounded by pine forests and with glorious beaches along the coastline stretching out from Makarska, the town also has a uniquely attractive, horseshoe-shaped harbour which overlooks Brac island, just 9 miles away.
The town has a long, palm-fringed promenade which is lined with a string of cafes, ice cream parlours and boutiques. Away from the seafront, you can relax in the elegant town square, edged by beautiful Venetian houses and overlooked by the Church of St Mark. An array of boat trips depart from the seafront for the nearby islands of Brac and Hvar. The town’s idyllic, small pebble beach is backed by fragrant pine trees, making a very pleasant spot for a dip in the invitingly clear water.
Ferries run regularly over to the village of Sumartin on Brac island. Enjoy a stroll around the pretty streets lined by traditional terracotta-roofed houses before having lunch in one of the excellent restaurants overlooking the harbour. There is also a lovely beach so don’t forget to pack your towels. Alternatively, take a trip over to the famous beach at Bol on Brac island, known throughout Croatia for its unusual finger of land that reaches out into the sea.
For a day trip to explore the region’s natural beauty, visit the Krka National Park, home to the stunningly beautiful waterfalls. Enjoy the view from a boat ride across the lake before taking the opportunity for a dip in the beautiful turquoise water. Alternatively, the city of Split is unmissable as the home of Diocletian’s Palace, the Roman ruins of which stretch across half the city. Immerse yourself in the history before enjoying a long lunch on Split’s stylish waterfront, the Riva.

Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesKids will love to cool off in the pool at Villa Liga and the free wi-fi will keep older ones satisfied too. Makarska’s attractive beach is only a mile away, but if there are complaints about walking, there is plenty of car parking at the beach so there is no need to haul your beach gear around. Beyond the town, there are numerous other beaches along what is known as the Makarska Rivijera, ranging from the quiet and peaceful to busier stretches offering watersports.
The Aquapark moored off Makarska beach will also hold appeal for younger guests, where they can enjoy scrambling around and sliding off into the turquoise water. Watersports are also available here, with everything from banana boat rides to canoe hire. The calm waters are ideal for stand-up paddle boarding, also popular with younger guests.
The nearby town of Omis, famous for its pirate past, offers a weekly pirate night during the summer months. Board the boat for a ride along the river Cetina where you will experience the excitement of a pretend pirate attack followed by a superb buffet, dancing and pirate games for all the family.
Kids will also enjoy a visit to the historic city of Split. Home to the extensive ruins of Diocletian’s Roman Palace, the city offers a fascinating insight into the region’s Roman past, with some impressive architecture.
