If you love nature, then you will love staying in Villa Bekir, nestled in the heart of the Turkish countryside, between the cosmopolitan town of Fethiye and the holiday hot spot of Olu Deniz, with its famous curving spit of sand separating Belcekiz beach from the Blue Lagoon. This beautiful one-storey villa was built out of local stone; it is set in its own private, high-walled grounds, with lush green lawns enclosed by tall trees. The villa has three spacious ensuite bathrooms and can comfortably accommodate up to six guests, ideal for a family holiday or friends' get-together. The property has all the mod cons, including complimentary air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and private off-road parking. The interiors are furnished with classic contemporary pieces, natural pine is used throughout, and the décor is a crisp, clean white colour with hues of blues highlights. The ambience of Villa Bekir is a welcoming home from home, an escape to the country vacation.

Access the villa via the impressive wooden double gates, where you will find a holiday home that is light and airy, with floor to ceiling sliding doors that run the length of the property. The spacious high, wooden beam ceiling living area has two comfy shades of blue sofas, matching armchairs, a flat-screen television, and an enclosed wood-burning fire for those cooler months and evenings. A separate white and beige kitchen is fully equipped with everything you will need to cater for your holidays, including a family-size fridge freezer, an oven and hob, and a washing machine and dishwasher. An informal dining set for four overlooks the garden. Walk down the hallways to three well-appointed large ensuite bedrooms. The master bedroom has a double bed, an in-room Jacuzzi bath, an ensuite marble bathroom with a walk-in shower, and access to the pool terrace. The second bedroom has a double bed, an ensuite shower room, and the third has two twin beds and an ensuite shower room.

The tiled terrace has a centrepiece swimming pool long enough for a few lengths before breakfast. Modern mesh turquoise sun loungers and shady parasols surround the pool. While the day away on the mobile swing seat, and meet for morning coffee and sunset cocktails at the soft seating spot. If you are feeling active, practice your table tennis at the ping pong table, and if you are feeling relaxed, lie on the well-manicured lawn as you catch up with this year's best seller. As dusk falls, feast alfresco at the six seater outdoor dining set, sample the local delicacies freshly grilled at the brick built barbecue, and raise a glass of raki to a happy holiday.

For shopping and the city, Fethiye is your destination. If it’s history you are after, you’ve come to the right place; hike the Lycian Way and take a trip through time. Trace the past with trips to Xanthos, the ancient capital of Lycia, and home to the oldest republic in the world, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site; discover mosaics, amphitheatres, agoras, and an acropolis. Walk the ancient ruins of Patara, the birthplace of St Nicholas, better known as Santa Claus, and lose yourself on its twenty-kilometre sandy beach, and also home to the famous Turkish hatching turtles. Explore the rock tombs of Tlos, carved into the façade of the ancient city ruins, where you will find a necropolis, Roman baths, and an Ottoman Basilica. Head for Letoon to see the mosaic of the goddess Leto as you wander through the Temple of Apollo. Whilst the honeycomb cliffs of Pinara hosts nine hundred rock tombs and a theatre in verdant setting. In Fethiye, you will find ancient sites dating back to two hundred years BC, the Lycian city of Telmessos, and the rock tombs of Amyntas, as well as sarcophagi, and a theatre immediately opposite the harbour, built to hold six thousand spectators, climb to the top for some fabulous sea views. Bring all of this together in the Fethiye Archeological Museum, full of local history, culture, and ephemera, most notably the Trilingual Stele, excavated at Letoon and inscribed with the languages of Lycia, Ancient Greek and Aramaic.

Kayakoy

The "Ghost Town" of Kayaköy was once inhabited by a substantial Greek Orthodox Christian; Artisans who left for Greece in the populations exchange 1923. Many of the old stone houses have been brought back to life and the village is again alive. There is a bohemian feel and a mix of restaurants cater for those enjoying the healthy village air. The cute beach at Gemiler is the closest place for sea swimming here. The area was the inspiration for Louis de Bernieres’ novel Birds Without Wings. Whilst here do try the local Gozleme pancakes.

Local days out include the resort of Gocek along the coast, Tlos ancient site and the Saklikent Gorge. Slightly further afield are Dalyan or going south, Patara for its sandy beach and ruins.

For the dare devils jumping off Babadag Mountain and paragliding down to Olu Deniz beach is the ultimate thrill. For those not so brave it’s almost as much fun to ride the cable car up the mountain, admire the scenery, and take tea at the top. If under the water is more your thing, there’s the opportunity to snorkel or scuba dive, take a PADI diving course, and discover the delights of a different world.

There’s a whole host of organised day trips to take to unique and unusual places. Don’t miss a visit to Saklikent Gorge, have fun walking down a fast-flowing river to a cooling waterfall. Ride the sand dunes and join a jeep safari where you can motor around Mugla, see ancient sites and traditional villages. For those after more adventure white water rafting over thirteen cascading kilometres of the Dalaman River may be just the thing for your older kids. After all of that they might be a bit dirty – don’t worry the whole family can enjoy a traditional Turkish bath, get clean with some serious scrubbing and a lot of bubbles, and maybe a mini massage too in one of the local hammams.
