Villa Nemo is a dreamlike villa set on a hillside in the hamlet of San Terenzo Monti, overlooking the Apuan National Park in Tuscany.

Built on several levels with terraces and loggias, this restored country house has maintained many of its original features and has been decorated in a classic Italian style to further highlight its old-world charm. Inside, guests can find six well-proportioned apartments spread across two floors, each equipped with at least one en-suite bathroom. The large living room benefits from exposed wooden beams, a stone fireplace and traditional furnishings, and acts as the perfect place for everyone to gather for a meal and downtime in the evenings.

The outside grounds are equally enticing – a picturesque courtyard, shaded pergola and comfortable seating areas together create a welcoming feel, inviting you to kick back while gazing out at the mountains looming above. On a sunny morning, choose to have your breakfast al-fresco whilst listening to songbirds and enjoying the summery scents of lavender bushes, lilies, roses and cypress before sunbathing or taking a dip in the infinity pool. Evenings are best spent in the company of an aperitif and then tucking into a barbecued feast.

Although it’s almost impossible to tire of a place such as Villa Nemo, it would be a missed opportunity not to venture outside when guests have the entire Tuscany and Liguria regions at their fingertips.

A supermarket can be found just a 5-minute walk away while the closest village is located only 15 minutes away by car has a restaurant and local amenities. Neighbouring Aulla is tucked a few more minutes away and benefits from family-owned wineries, bars, trattorias as well as shops where you can stock up on Italian hams, cheeses and fresh fruit.

Just under a 30-minute drive away in Equi Terme, you can enjoy healing thermal pools and fantastic treatments that will make you feel rejuvenated and refreshed. Also around a 30-minute drive away, Lerici is a town and commune forming a part of the Italian Riviera and its port is dotted with fishing and sailing boats. Take a stroll here before heading downtown to explore its many souvenir shops, restaurants and cafés with tables stretching all the way to the cobbled streets.

The far edge of Tuscany, the Lunigiana region is nestled between valleys that open at the foot of two mountain chains – the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and the Apuan Alps. Taking its name from the particular beauty of the moon when framed against the mountain peaks, the region is home to some of Italy’s wildest and most unspoilt countryside.

Get your walking boots on and set out to discover the nearby Apuan National Park – a sprawling mountain range with an array of hiking and walking trails offering unobstructed views of limestone peaks and the sea below. Another atmospheric experience is visiting the Cascate di Fiacciano – a forest with canyons and mini waterfalls with azure-clear water.

You can’t say you’ve visited this part of Italy without ticking Cinque Terre off your bucket list. The coastal area comprises five villages which are connected by scenic walking paths and form part of the Cinque Terre National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Overlooking the Ligurian Sea, you can walk on the terraces built on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs where lovers engrave their initials into the stone walls.

Other notable cities/towns include La Spezia and Sarzana, both within 40 minutes’ drive away and further down from La Spezia lies a village known as Porto Venere. This little village is known for its Gothic-style church of St. Peter, imposing cliff top fortress and Porto Venere Regional National Park – a protected area comprising Palmaria island full of spectacular beaches and hidden caves.

Another great place worth visiting during your Italian getaway and located less than an hour away by car is Carrara, notable for the white or blue-grey marble quarried there ever since the Roman Age. In addition to visiting the city’s marble quarries, you can also explore its museum of statuary and antiquities and walk around the pretty historic centre filled with Renaissance architecture.

True jet-setters will love that the jewel of the Italian Riviera, Portofino can be reached in under two hours by car, ideal for a day trip or overnight stay. Full of azure pools, colourful houses and a cobbled piazzetta overlooking the harbour, it captures the old-world glamour of Italy’s chicest seaside retreat.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Children will simply love splashing in the sea and building sandcastles at one of the many beaches nearby. Bagno Piero is around an hour’s drive away and is a long sandy beach with shallow waters and family-friendly areas full of sun loungers where you can spend the entire day. Around 70km away, Spiaggia della Lecciona is slightly on the wilder side, backed by a pine forest and dunes.

A trip to the marble quarries of Carrara is a fantastic option for a fun-filled day out. You can book a group or private off-road tour in the stunning scenery of the Carrara marble basins, where some scenes of the James Bond film ‘Quantum of Solace’ were filmed and witness huge marble blocks being transported downhill.

Young history enthusiasts will love exploring the region’s many castles. Notably Castello Malaspina-Doria located in Piazza del Popolo belongs to one of the most beautiful fortresses in the Val d’Aveto, while Castello di Lerici is perched high above the city’s harbour and has a pentagonal tower. A wholesome hike in the city of Sarzana will take you to the Fortezza di Sarzanello, a hilltop fortress with medieval origins from which boasts unspoilt views.

When wishing to spend more time in nature and surrounded by animals, take a trip to the Apuo Ranch where you can pet the resident goats and donkeys, and go horse-back riding in the pristine surroundings.

Alternatively, get your culture fix in one of La Spezia’s many museums – Museo Civico Amedeo Lia is an art museum with a collection of antiques from the 18th century, and Technical Naval Museum of Spezia showcases cannons, guns and model ships boys of every age will love.

Wonderful site with a beautiful swimming pool, a place that really allows you to unwind. A host who listens to us.

  • Views, village, and villa to die for

    on 17/07/2023

Our group vacation was to reconnect five lifelong girlfriends. We brought our friends and families together too and the trip was magical. The villa is even more gorgeous in person. The landscaping, replete with natural beauty, is comfortable and inviting- flowers, herb and vegetable gardens, grape vines, and ponds with fish and frogs. Don't forget to bring a swimsuit because the pool saved us all on HOT July days and nights. The village is very small and intimate, atop narrow, winding, country roads, bordered with grape orchards, small shops, roadside water fountains of white marble statues, and a local cemetery. Plan to do your driving in the daylight; the views are not to be missed, and the roads are more manageable. The local church community center allows villa guests to mingle with villagers over ice cream on weekend evenings. Church bells ring out the hours, lending warmth and charm. The owners took care of all our questions and needs. The apartments provided privacy for couples and families. Communal areas were great for dining and lounging. A road just outside the villa is the perfect place for a morning walk through luscious green trees and picturesque farms with old farmhouses. The site houses deep wounds from World War II, explained by placards along the route. It is a place of commemoration and healing. A medieval castle, mineral springs, quarries, Pisa, and the sea, were great day trips. Overnights elsewhere included Parma & Pompeii.

  • Excellent location

Excellent space for groups of friends, swimming pool in an excellent location!

  • A pleasant discovery

    on 12/06/2023

Fantastic place surrounded by greenery. A pleasant discovery. I hope to return soon because we had a wonderful time. Special praise goes to the owner, for her availability and kindness, and the person who managed the booking impeccably. Everyone responded promptly, congratulations!

  • Brilliant owner

    on 22/09/2022

Very kind and hospitable host, he brilliantly solved all our needs.

  • Had the best time

    on 29/08/2022

We had the best time at Villa Nemo. The pictures simply don't do it justice. We had worried there might not be enough room and space outside for the 8 teenage kids in our group, but we're delighted to find lots of grassy, (often shady) areas to play games, sun bath etc, in amongst the beautiful planting, including more sweet smelling rosemary and thyme than I have ever seen - even around the (enormous and refreshing) pool, which was the perfect place to cool off. Plenty to do in the area, inbetween relaxing at the villa. Hosts are so helpful and charming. Grazie mille to the owner and family.

  • Great stay

A little lost in the middle of the land but nice place! The welcome was perfect and the owner's availability is equally great! We had a great stay! THANKS

Beautiful location, ideal for groups of friends!

  • Better than we could have imagined

    on 21/07/2019

This place was all we had hoped for and more!
This villa was perfect for our group, everyone got their own private space as well as communal space to eat and hang out.
The swimming pool was big and clean and we spend many hours just letting time pass and relaxing. Our host made us feel so welcome and made sure all was in order and one night we booked dinner at the villa, the food was fantastic.
The area is picturesque with amazing views and surrounding villages feel almost like we had gone time traveling to some dream past.
Make sure your google translate is working because non-off the villagers we met spoke English, but that just made our stay even better.
The drive up to the villa was exiting and I believe I can drive anywhere after going up and down the Italian mountain roads.
The beach is not a long drive away and we also took few day trips during our stay to cinque Terre, Florence, Porto Fino and Pisa.
This house and the host made our Italian dream vacation better than we could have imagined, I hope to be back one day

  • Ideal location

    on 05/06/2019

We spent a wonderful long weekend in this house as part of a family reunion. The location was ideal: a set of independent apartments in a tastefully restored old agricultural property, with access to a large common room which allowed us to eat meals together. The view from the swimming pool, which dominates the region, is splendid! The welcome from the owner and her family was very warm, even if we were handicapped by the language!

  • Do not miss it!

    on 07/08/2018

Marvellous place near cinque terre, lost in the beautiful mountains.
The house is very nice and all is so clean. Host are fantastic. The hosts are extremely nice and attentive. if you wish to eat, by reservation, you will be amazed by delicious dishes that will be served to you.
The site is perfectly well maintained, in a wonderful setting with guests of a very great kindness. Do not miss it!
