The Mani peninsula offers a spectacular rugged coastline, sleepy fishing coves, fortified villages, spectacular mountain views and sensational caves. Its quaint villages, including Oitylon, are built in enchanting honey and grey stone, looking absolutely beautiful against the pine and cypress clad hills. Mani is an unexplored natural treasure that is becoming ever more popular. It has been discovered and you can explore this fabulous area full of fragrant wild flowers, thyme, oregano and mixed with pebbled and sandy beaches when booking to stay at Villa Oitylon.

Mani consists of two parts, northern Mani with the picturesque coastal villages of Stoupa and Kardamyli and southern Mani, also called Deep Mani. Southern Mani enjoys tiny winding roads and a sensational, rugged coastline. Areopolis, above the Bay of Itylo is the start of the southern Mani, a village 8km from the villa. Just south of Areopolis are the famous Diros Caves. Visitors can hire their own ferryman to explore the underworld brimming with stalactites and crystal clear water.

The peninsula attracts visitors for its Byzantine churches and Frankish castles, its secluded beaches and stunning scenery. The fortified mansions and towers of Mani are a beautiful sight with tiled roofs and raw walls. Medieval villages are perched on hilltops with the stone towers hanging on the steep cliffs. From Kardamyli you can visit the nearby Alepotripa Caves and the dramatic Viros Gorge as well as Cape Tainaron. Kardamyli is one of the best preserved traditional villages of Mani with bars, shops and restaurants. You can hike to the Viros Gorge and the springs of the Viros River.

If you take the main coastal road in Mani, it will take you from the foothills of Mt Taygetos past Proastio with its beautiful churches, past the picturesque Stoupa and the ruins of the Frankish castle of Beaufort. It then follows to the harbour of Agios Nikolaos and Agios Dimitrios Beach. Passing through Platsa and Nomitsi, you will then reach Itilo, the capital of the region and then Areopolis. South of Areopolis are the Diros caves, Harounda Village and the village of Mezapos. The picturesque village of Gerolimenas is further along, spread around a pebbled beach and where you can enjoy some delicious food. Finally you will arrive in Vathia.

How to reach Peloponnese

You can easily reach Loutraki, the main seaside resort on the Peloponnese peninsula. Loutraki is located approximately 80 km from Athens and you can arrive to Loutraki through the National road.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Villa Oitylon is ideal for a family holiday. With six bedrooms and extra beds in some of them, you could easily enjoy a holiday with two or three families or a multi-generational family. The swimming pool is amazing.

Children can enjoy discovering hidden beaches, wonderful caves and majestic mountains. Most famous are the Diros Caves, one of the most beautiful lake caves in the world. Diros is divided into three caves, stretching 14km in the bowels of the Mani earth. The tourist route stretches 1.5km. The temperature in the caves always ranges between 17 and 19 degress. The boat ride, which children love, lasts for approximately half an hour.

Children that enjoy hiking are in a fantastic place. If you were to start at Gythio it would be a 7 hour hike to the refuge on Mt Taygetos, passing through Kastania and past the Monastery of Panagia Giatrissa but obviously not many young ones would want to hike for 7 hours. There are much shorter hikes where children can enjoy magical scenery and stop at charming, ancient villages for refreshments.

One of the highlights will be discovering some of Mani’s delightful beaches. Most are hidden in tiny coves along the rugged coastline. The Skoutari Beaches consist of three sandy beaches which are quiet and idyllic. The Marmari Beaches in southern Mani are considered to be some of the best. They are located just before reaching Cape Tainaron. Mavrovouni Beach is very well organised with a good array of watersports offered. It is a resort village with lots of amenities. Stoupa offers two excellent beaches, Stoupa and Kalogria. They enjoy fine sand, huge trees and good tavernas. Agios Nikolasos’ beach is small, pebbled and very pretty. Another lovely pebbled beach is Kardamyli Beach.

  • Would come back

    on 31/08/2023

Superb villa with great space outside. Great swimming pool, overall very good service. We would come back with a group of friends.

  • Amazing stay

    on 24/08/2023

We had an amazing stay, all in all a wonderful property. Fantastic location, the most beautiful view of the bay and the mountains of Mani. Beautiful house, gorgeous outdoor surroundings, peace and quiet... Minor detail: The bed pillows are very firm and uncomfortable. The selection of kitchen facilities and utensils could be better, proper lights in the kitchen area. Outdoor containers for garbage would be great.

  • Highly recommend

    on 30/06/2023

We spent five very nice days in this beautiful, very spacious house. The swimming pool delighted everyone. The Mani region is magnificent. We highly recommend this house.
