Overview

Pool Villa/House Modern Ideal for Kids Laptop Friendly Workspace

Sitting at the foot of the Luberon mountain range and surrounded by stunning natural landscapes and charming villages to visit, Mas Sarran is the ideal home for your trip to Provence as there is so much to discover nearby.

The house can be found in serene, gated gardens within a small Provencal village. The single storey home has been lovingly renovated by the owners in recent years to create a contemporary family-home with open-plan living spaces and yet retains original features such as rustic beams and open fireplaces.

The heart of the home is the spacious main room where you will find the fully-fitted kitchen which has all the appliances you will need for cooking up the fresh produce from the market. Within this room there is also a large antique dining table, ideal for gathering for an evening meal and a living space with comfortable sofas. With sliding doors out on to the terrace this open-plan room is a great social space.

The bedrooms are also located on this floor which is perfect for those with reduced mobility or with young children as you do not need to worry about stairs. There are four elegant bedrooms you can choose from which boast crisp linen and comfy beds. Two of the bedrooms can be set up as double or twin rooms depending on the needs of your party which is really handy and two of the bedrooms also offer chic en-suite bathrooms.

As well as lovely interiors, the villa also has all of the modern facilities you could require for a relaxing stay, including Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a coffee machine and TVs.

Outdoors, there is a wonderful garden which is filled with the scents of rosemary, pine and lavender which are dotted around the space. The garden has areas for al-fresco dining under the covered terrace, outdoor sofas, lawns, tall trees and a brilliant private pool. You are sure to wish to spend plenty of time out here enjoying the sun.

When you fancy a fresh baguette for lunch or would like to eat out without taking the car, the restaurants, bakery and bar of the village of Oppède are around 20 minutes away on foot (via country lanes). You can find more eateries and historic sites such as churches and castle ruins in the old village of Oppède le Vieux which sits half way up the mountain, 3km away. This medieval village was left abandoned for many centuries when the villagers moved down the hill, so is a fascinating place to visit with a rich history.

Aside from these local villages you can also head a little further out to the gorgeous village of Bonnieux which is 17km away from the villa and is one of the finest villages in the Luberon. Art lovers will also enjoy a trip to the town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence which was once home to Vincent van Gogh and is 34km away!

This region is also a brilliant place to visit to re-connect with nature as you are surrounded by a mountain range and ancient woodlands where you can walk, cycle and go rock climbing while enjoying unrivalled views.

The home is located outside of a serene village in Oppède, Provence, which is encircled by mountains, woodlands and pretty villages.

The nearest amenities can be found in the village; there is a bakery, bar, a few restaurants and tennis courts in this little village which is nestled at the bottom of the Luberon mountain range making it a fantastic base for exploring this diverse area.

Just 3km away, built in to the side of the mountain is Oppède le Vieux. This is where the villagers from Oppède once lived before they abandoned the old village as it was a rather impractical place to live. The village was built over 1000 years ago and played an important in defending the region. Oppède le Vieux was resettled by a group of artists in the 1930s, though it still retains the feel of a sleepy ghost town in parts. Today you can visit the 13th century Notre-Dame-d'Alydon church, the old walls and the ruins of the impressive castle.

Close to the villa you will also find an extensive network of cycle paths, walking and hiking routes through the rugged terrain of the Luberon. The landscape is named after the main mountain range, though there are also forested areas, the river Durance and wide open-countryside here too. If you are feeling adventurous you could try paragliding, rock climbing and kayaking along the rivers.

The Luberon is also known for its charming hilltop villages which are what you may imagine when you think of a typical Provencal scene. One village which should make your itinerary is Ménerbes which is just 3km away. Ménerbes is known as one of the most beautiful villages in France, and as you wander around the picturesque streets with views over the verdant valleys and cherry orchards below, it is easy to see why. The village is a lovely place to pass an afternoon eating lunch al-fresco and exploring the sights. Though Ménerbes is small, there is a 16th-century fortress, an old cemetery, ancient churches and the impressive clock tower that you can see. Foodies will enjoy a trip to the House of Truffles and Wine which is a palatial home offering courses on wine appreciation and information on some of the delicious produce in the area. This quaint village has been home to a number of artists and writers over the years, including travel writer Peter Mayle who wrote 'A Year in Provence' and inspired swathes of people to visit this great region. You can see Mayle’s house and the homes of others such as Picasso’s mistress during your visit.

If you wish to visit a busy city with lots to see and do, then Avignon is just 36km away by car. The city is well-known for is Gothic palace which was once home to the papacy, but is also packed with museums, galleries and boutique shops so is definitely worth the trip.

Region

With some of the most enchanting landscapes of Provence, the Luberon awaits with its idyllic perched villages, swathes of lavender, cherry trees, vineyards and dense forest.

Become captivated by the scenery as you potter around artistic Gordes with its atmospheric Tuesday morning market before heading to hilltop Ménerbes, the village that inspired Peter Mayle’s ‘A Year in Provence’. Romantic Bonnieux enjoys the most glorious vistas, surrounded by a sea of vines and orchards, whilst red-hued Roussillon will take your breath away with its ochre landscapes and pine forests. They are all officially classified as ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ in France.

Yet there are so many hidden gems to explore as well. Discover the historic doorways, windmills and summer cherries of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, then head to Goult to embrace its Provençal charm with little shops and pavement cafes. Surrounded by fields of lavender, Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt is another historic jewel of the Luberon, often overshadowed by the handsome and historic town of Apt.

To the south of the Luberon, follow Albert Camus’ footsteps in Lourmarin, sip coffee by the picturesque bassin lined with plane trees in Cucuron and soak up the history of Ansouis – all three villages have a fine reputation for their high-end dining with a choice of Michelin starred restaurants.

Indeed, across the region look out for restaurant terraces serving Provençal cuisine with superb vistas alongside characterful markets showcasing seasonal delights from the Luberon and beyond (olives, melons, strawberries, cherries, truffles, chestnuts, lavender products and more). Most villages host a lovely weekly market whilst the largest in the Luberon is held on a Saturday morning in Apt. Just on the edge of the Luberon, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is famed for its antique stores and Sunday morning brocante. Meanwhile, wine lovers should visit the vineyards and wineries of the region producing Luberon and Ventoux AOC wines.

The walking, hiking and cycling opportunities in the Luberon seem endless and you will also find horse-riding, rock-climbing and tree-top adventures as well as canoeing and kayaking along the Sorgue near Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Come across hiking trails for all abilities passing vineyards and forest or venture through the hills and mountain gorges for spectacular scenery. Cycling is also extremely popular – as well as more challenging routes, we especially love the family-friendly Véloroute du Calavon, a paved voie verte following a former railway line near the Calavon river passing poppies, lavender and orchards so typical of the Luberon.

The Luberon Natural Regional Park covers over 500 square miles of stunning, protected land which surrounds the villa, offering families plenty of space for adventure and memory making. On your doorstep you can find sign-posted, child-friendly walking trails, pretty picnic spots and equine centres.

A little further out you can also discover fantastic gorges, rivers and caves. One place you could visit with the children are the Grottes de Thouzon caves which are 23km away. This huge system of caves was created by an underground river and is an enchanting place to take the kids. The cave is filled with amazing stalactites and stalagmites and you will be shown around be a knowledgeable guide.
