Overview

Pool Villa/House Ideal for Kids Parking Space

Embrace the beauty and peace of Provence whilst being just a short drive (or cycle ride) to the heart of charming Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in this sensitively converted mas in Les Alpilles.

Mas de l'Escarelle, with its glorious garden and swimming pool, has such a warm ambience throughout with its character and gorgeous interiors. Having been completely renovated, we love the home’s original features such as the authentic fireplace in the salon made from Fontvieille stone, traditional small windows and beautiful arched doorways. Up to 10 guests can stay here across five pretty bedrooms, four which feature a bath or shower room.

Outside the Provençal grounds bring such joy, not just its 12m long swimming pool and sun-loungers, but also its al-fresco dining corner with barbecue, south-facing terrace and outdoor lounge in the shade of the century-old lime tree.

In a rural setting of farmland and olive groves with a view of pine woodland, this is such a peaceful countryside spot to make the most of Les Alpilles. Yet it is just under a 5km drive to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence with its restaurants, art galleries and delightful Wednesday morning market, a town famed for its Van Gogh associations. The most active of guests could reach Saint-Rémy on foot or bike by following the small tow path by the bordering Canal des Alpines.

Take long walks through the landscapes of Provence straight from your home, spend time pottering around gorgeous villages such as Les Baux-de-Provence, Maussane-les-Alpilles and Eygalières and enjoy wonderful cuisine in local restaurants. The historic town of Tarascon can be reached within a 15-minute drive, by the banks of the Rhône, whilst the small and historic city of Avignon is also easily reached within half an hour.

Mas de l'Escarelle enjoys a rural location just 5km from the charming town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in the Bouches-du-Rhône department of southern France, part of Les Alpilles Regional Natural Park. It is also only 11km from the historic town of Tarascon by the banks of the Rhône.

Art-lovers will adore the galleries of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, a town where Vincent Van Gogh lived towards the end of his life. As you explore its historic centre come across café terraces, characterful restaurants and little shops. See what exhibitions may be taking place at Musée Estrine and don’t miss the wonderful Wednesday morning market where traders from across the region fill the town’s narrow lanes selling olives, herbs, cheeses, charcuterie, homeware, clothes, lavender products and a wealth of seasonal fruit and vegetables from across Provence.

Les Baux-de-Provence (7.5km) is a must-visit, classified as one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ and home to an impressive château with incredible views over the surrounding landscapes. Meanwhile, take walks through the olive groves, stop off in little farms to sample olive oil, cheese and other gastronomic delights and enjoy lunch out in the picturesque village of Maussane-les-Alpilles (14km).

Eygalières (18km) is another picture-perfect village where a small handful of A-list celebrities have been known to have bought houses whilst the tiny village of Paradou is worthy of a visit, especially for the highly regarded Le Bistrot du Paradou, as featured in Rick Stein’s recent series about France.

Hire bikes, head out for long walks or explore the beautiful scenery on horse-back and there are also rock-climbing opportunities across Les Alpilles. The neighbouring region of the Luberon is also a paradise for outdoor lovers with incredible hikes, fantastic cycling opportunities and plenty of vineyards alongside bucolic perched villages such as Ménerbes and Gordes, both reached within a 50-minute drive.

The small, historic city of Avignon (21km) is a great day out with its markets, buzzing restaurants, wine-bars and UNESCO World Heritage sites, Palais des Papes and Pont d’Avignon. Keen cyclists should venture across to France’s largest river island, île de la Barthelasse, to admire scenic views of Avignon from across the other side of the Rhône.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

When taking time to explore Saint-Rémy with your family, look out for the Van Gogh art trail and learn all about the places which inspired the great Dutch painter. Meanwhile, youngsters will enjoy letting off steam at the playground in Place Joseph Mauron.

If visiting Les Baux-de-Provence, head to the tourist office and pick up a ‘treasure map’ to help you explore the characterful hilltop village and its historic château. Elsewhere in Les Alpilles, spend time at the farm at L'Arche de Méo, try out horse-riding or pony-trekking, take long walks through the olive groves, woodland or even by the Canal des Alpilles and you can even have a go at rock-climbing.

The most adventurous of young guests should venture to Fontaine-de-Vaucluse for canoeing and kayaking along the Sorgue as well as some incredible hikes. You may like to combine this with a trip to the tree-top adventure centre, Gateways Cîmes, which is home to trails for a variety of ages.
