Overview of Chateau De Baloigne

What Oliver loves…

  • The property is set within the ruins of a medieval castle with some parts of the original dungeon dating back to the 12th century. Quite simply a magical, unique experience. I can't impress upon you or emphasize this enough - the photos do not do it justice!
  • The views in every direction are just stunning. You are in the heart of nature surrounded by pine trees with the river running below.
  • There are multiple great spots to relax and while away the hours either reading or enjoying a glass of wine on the terraces overlooking the woodland.

What you should know…

  • The wifi is only available in the dining room, the kitchen and the rear terrace adjoining the kitchen.
  • There have been many groups with young children enjoy the chateau but remember that the property is set in castle ruins so some care does need to be taken!

Chateau De Baloigne sits in the popular Ardeche region of south eastern France. For those seeking comfort, character, style and an atmosphere unique amongst our collection, then this medieval castle is the perfect choice for your luxury chateau holiday! This fabulous self-catering chateau is surrounded by medieval ruins providing a truly atmospheric holiday experience.

The Chateau De Baloigne, and indeed the whole estate, is protected by the government as a Historic Monument. However, the ancient building has been combined with 21st century touches such as a fully fitted kitchen, hot and cold running water and modern bathrooms with showers. The interior décor is traditionally French but with a few Spanish touches.

The Chateau De Baloigne can sleep up to 15 guests in six bedrooms in the main house and a basic studio apartment is also available in a separate part of the ruins if needed, (all of which overlook the medieval ruins). There is also table tennis, various dining terraces, a beautiful old open fire and a library.

Interior & Grounds

On the lower ground floor the communal reception rooms include a dining room with vaulted ceilings, a large kitchen, a dining terrace (ideal for breakfast and dinner). There is also a double bedroom with en suite shower.

On the ground floor there is a further living room with an open fire and a library, and an enormous double bedroom and bathroom (ideal for the elderly). There’s also an upper covered terrace, perfect for lunch, siestas and aperitifs!

On the first floor there are 3 doubles and a triple room. There are a further 3 bathrooms that are either private or en-suite.

Outside the dramatic listed medieval ruins will take your breath away every time you see them! There is also a table tennis table, boules and games for the children. There is even a river where guests can swim just 100m down from the chateau.

Map, Location & Local Information

The walkable Ardeche river is a great spot to picnic, swim or fish. There are plenty of water sport activities locally and the crocodile park nearby is also worth a visit! The nearest swimming pool is just a 10 minute drive away and is great for the kids if they don't fancy the river below the chateau.

Essentials (such as bread and wine) can be found just 2km from the chateau. There are also a couple of good restaurants within walking distance. All the necessary shops, services and restaurants are 4km away in the charming village of Saint Michel de Boulogne. Lyon airport is 100km away.

The area is renowned for its multitude of outdoor activities including horse riding, walking and canyoning on the river to name just a few locally.

Chateau de Baloigne is magical, in the most beautiful setting in the Ardeche. Surrounded by woodland, flowers, dragon and butterflies.

The setting was wonderful for a large family group as there are lots of places to lose yourself in the house and grounds and a wonderful dining place in which to all congregate.

Madame was so helpful and friendly and fascinating to have a tour of the ruins with the owner.

It was a wonderful way to celebrate my Mother's 70th birthday.
