Overview

Recommended

The foothills of the Cévennes mountains positively embrace this stone chateau in Languedoc. Sitting at the top of the 19th century tower with a 360 degree view, you’ll feel like a king or queen of the forest below. The three reception halls and yoga/seminar room make this a clever choice for a company retreat or family reunion.

The wide, wonderful private pool is the centerpiece of outdoor life at this holiday chateau. No less stunning are the mountain views from the dining terrace, or from the many nooks and crannies in the chateau itself. The 11 bedrooms are all furnished simply, letting hills outside adorn the space. The kitchen is a special treat - it has been beautifully updated, yet it's still in harmony with the old stone ceiling above.

Tucked on the edge of the Cevennes National Park, there are unlimited outdoor adventures to be had from your holiday chateau. Be ready to retreat from the world - the nearest tiny town (Banne) is a 25 minute walk away. Not just avid hikers be in heaven, there are natural wonders nearby everyone will love; in particular you'll want to visit the caves and grottoes of la Cocalière.

The nearest airport is Nimes (1hour 15mins) and the nearest town is Banne. Banne hosts an art festival during the summer and is a meeting point for various guided hikes. The nearest train station is Nimes, but for certain trains Valance TGV or Avignon are sometimes preferable.

Grab a map from the living room and set off into nature. Here on the edge of the Cevennes national park there’s so much to explore, including forests, rivers and viaducts. Take a 25 minute walk downhill to the medieval village of Banne.  Nearby are the deep caves and grottes of la Cocalliere. Swim in our new 21 metre pool or take a short drive to an idyllic swimming hole, complete with enormous rocks and a waterfall.

There are tennis courts in St. Paul le Jeune and les Vans. Biking in the cevennes means miles of unspoiled scenery, wildflowers, wildlife, and few human encounters. The Ardèche river with its famous Pont d'Arc is a short drive away. It is easy to rent canoes and you can spend the day floating down the river or sun bathing on the shores.

The Pont du Gard was built shortly before the Christian era to allow the aqueduct of Nîmes (which is almost 50 km long) to cross the Gard river. The Roman architects and hydraulic engineers who designed this bridge, which stands almost 50m high, created a technical and artistic masterpiece.

Uzes is a popular market town. Between Nimes and Avignon, this discreet but elegant town is a rare find. Market day is Saturday. Don’t miss it!

Visit the beautiful walled city of Avignon, where you can learn about the history of the Papacy in France or explore its elegant shops. For lunch head north to Chateauneuf-du-Pape, home to the finest wines of the Rhone valley.

Owner Profile

Property Owner
Claire

How long have you owned the property?
15 years

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
The way it is surrounded by nature and removed from the cares of the modern world.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
The house was owned by Mai Zetterling, the famous Swedish actress and film director.

Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
Aah, that would be giving away secrets!

What’s the strangest or most difficult guest request you’ve ever received?
One guest, unaccustomed to staying in large houses and naive about the care of swimming pools, asked if we regularly changed the water in the pool between clients.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?

Hike in the stunning nature of the Ardèche.

Really eat?
Fresh, seasonal food from the local markets.

Really see?
The billions and billions of stars in the sky above the house.

Lastly, what insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
Although our swimming pool is heavenly, a trip to the Ardèche wouldn't be complete without a cooling dip into a local river.

The Region

Languedoc-Roussillon is one of those areas of France where you can feel like you’re totally cut off from the rest of the country. Commercial tourism has been very slow to capitalise on the region, meaning you can still enjoy a slice of authentic French rural life at its finest. A mixture of landscapes also makes it a great place to visit, with a good stretch of coastline offering a totally different experience to more bucolic interiors. Whatever you’re looking for, our range of villas and chateaux in Languedoc means you can get exactly the kind of holiday you want with accommodation that’s perfectly tailored to you, your friends and your family.

  • Fantastic holiday with the best pool

    Posted by Fiona on 01/05/2017

Well we are back from a fantastic holiday in your chateau. What a treasure, we all thought it was the most beautiful house and a delight to be in. Abby was very kind and helpful as my husband was exhausted when we arrived and he collapsed onto a sofa for the afternoon while we went shopping. We found the house very well equipped – great to have a food processor when you have a bunch of keen cooks in the house. All the plumbing worked fine and we never ran out of hot water. The setting is stunning and we loved the different terraces at different times of day. The pool is the best I have ever had in a house, great to have a really long one. Nobody wanted to leave and I hope we will be able to come back as the area suited us perfectly, particularly the quiet which is so lovely after London.

  • Summer 2012

Posted by Paula Puxty on 09/03/2013

As a group of 4 families we wanted space but also socialising areas where we could meet for meals and drinks. Chateau de Mazelle offered all of those things. The pool was a gorgeous centre point every day for the children - and the adults - to splash around and have fun. The dining terrace became the meeting point each day for fun and laughter - the dumb waiter lift from the kitchen was priceless for serving up the meals each day. The thunder storm we experienced from the terrace was one never to be forgotten - stunning! A day trip to the local caves was great for the kids but to be honest, everything we needed was at the chateau. A fantastic location for a group holiday. We will absolutely and definitely be back. The views alone are enough to get us back again. Heaven on earth!

  • Reality was altogether different

Posted by Phillippa G on 07/12/2011

Our party of 20 had high expectations having gained a sense of what was in store from your website. But the reality was altogether different. On arrival we were all strangely silent, genuinely shocked by the extraordinary beauty of your home and its setting. On our first day we didn't leave the house and it was hard to drag ourselves away after that but the stunning landscape beckoned and on subsequent days, guided by your thoughtful guide, we explored the region on bikes, foot and on one day picnicked at the watering hole by the bridge where most of the children and adults including our four year old jumped off the cliff into the water.

We ate like kings, cooking for ourselves every day in your extremely well equipped kitchen - delights such as freshly made bread, ice cream, barbecued squid and prawns. On our last night Ino cooked for us.We worried for him because there was such culinary talent among our party we thought he would be unable to reach the high standards to which we had become accustomed. But we were proved wrong. He cooked a splendid feast and it was a real pleasure to relax so completely on our last night.

The stunning pool was in constant use when we were home...but the pool was not only a joy for the kids but also for the adults - it is so rare for a house pool to be so long that it allows for a proper swim.

Thank you both for allowing us to spend the week in your incredible home. There was total consensus that this was the best holiday any of our families had had.

It will not surprise you to learn that we would love to return. So please, please if you have any spaces left for next summer do allow us to book again.

    With much gratitude and thanks.
