Exuding character, warmth and style, this beautiful village house with its garden and swimming pool is in the much-loved Provençal village of Maussane-les-Alpilles.

Maison Solitaire sleeps up to 8 guests across its four impressive suites and apartment-bedroom spread over three floors of this historic village home. The living spaces downstairs boast charming features such as high ceilings, exposed stone walls, wood-beams and cement-tiled floors juxtaposing contemporary furnishings and a magnificent modern kitchen with a range of high-end appliances. Doors open out to the garden and swimming pool.

Air-conditioned throughout, each of the four suites feature queen or king-size double beds and en suite bathrooms alongside thoughtful touches such as Nespresso machines, mini-fridges and bath products. Each bedroom is individually styled, some with living areas – the two suites on the top floor are especially spacious. There is a also a fifth double bedroom within an apartment on the first floor.

The small swimming pool is just right for cooling off on warm summer days and the walled garden feels surprisingly private considering your village location. Prepare feasts from local gastronomic delights to serve on the al-fresco table and chairs.

That said, there are plenty of restaurants in the village from a pizzeria just a few steps away to the café and restaurant terraces beneath the plane trees in the main square, only 500m on foot. Indeed, Maussane-les-Alpilles has gained quite a culinary reputation – look out for artisan shops and the Thursday morning market showcasing Vallée des Baux extra virgin olive oil, wine, honey, goat’s cheese and so much more.

Other pretty villages within a short drive include Les Baux-de-Provence, one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, and hilltop Eygalières, both boasting magnificent vistas of the surrounding landscapes of Les Alpilles. The region offers walking, hiking, cycling and horse-riding opportunities alongside golf in idyllic surroundings.

Further afield, spend the day exploring the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Nîmes and Avignon or following the footsteps of Van Gogh in artistic Arles. Not forgetting the bustling town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, famed for its art galleries and Wednesday morning market, and the vineyards of the Rhône valley with Châteauneuf-du-Pape less than an hour away by car.

At Maison Solitaire you are in the bustling heart of Maussane-les-Alpilles, a charming village in Les Alpilles Natural Regional Park around a 40-minute drive south of Avignon.

On the main village road, you have a couple of restaurants a few steps away whilst the village square with its pretty church, café terraces and plane trees is less than 500m on foot. Maussane has gained quite a reputation for its gastronomy with a variety of excellent restaurants alongside little shops selling local delicacies such as olive oil, wine, honey, goat’s cheese and more. The Thursday morning market in Maussane is another great way to experience the culinary highlights of the area whilst the highly regarded Le Bistrot du Paradou is only 1.3km away.

This is a fantastic location for exploring Les Alpilles and beyond. One of the region’s most famous villages, Les Baux-de-Provence, is around a 10-minute drive away, perched above landscapes of olive groves, limestone valleys and forests. Meanwhile, soak up the authentic ambience of nearby Fontvieille (8km) or Mouriès (7km) and look out for celebrities and Michelin starred cuisine in Eygalières (18km).

Many local villages and towns host atmospheric weekly markets including Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (11km) on a Wednesday morning, a town also loved for its rich artistic heritage. The historic town of Arles (18km) is another highlight with its art exhibitions, markets, restaurants and Roman sites, also the gateway to the captivating Camargue.

If you can find the time, spend the day in historic Avignon (38km) or Nîmes (45km), canoe/kayak beneath the magnificent Pont du Gard (40km) or venture to the iconic perched villages, orchards, vineyards and idyllic landscapes of the Luberon with both Ménerbes and Gordes around an hour away by car.

Here you are in the very heart of a typical Provençal village with restaurants catering for a variety of tastes including a pizzeria just a few steps away. There are tennis courts both in Maussane and Paradou whilst bike hire can be arranged locally, a great way for cycling-loving families to explore the area.

Alongside walking trails, horse-riding and even rock-climbing, other family activities across the region include L'Arche de Méo farm where you can feed animals in charming surroundings and Carrières des Lumières where great works of art are projected on to quarry walls. Check to see if Vélorail des Alpilles is open – if so, it’s a fun way to experience the scenery of Provence as you pedal along historic railway tracks from Fontvieille.

Experience canoeing/kayaking beneath Le Pont du Gard or along the Sorgue river near Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, also home to other summer activities including a tree-top adventure centre.

Young art enthusiasts note there are Van Gogh trails in both St-Rémy and Arles alongside art exhibitions, markets and historic sites. Be inspired by the captivating landscapes of the Camargue where you will find quad-biking, horse-riding, bird-watching, nature walks, boat rides and even sandy beaches of the Mediterranean at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer within an hour by car.

Security deposit €3000 charged to client's credit card as a pre-authorisation at least 2 weeks prior to arrival and refunded two weeks after departure, subject to full inspection.
