Overview

Pool Ideal for Kids Hot Tub

Situated in an idyllic pastoral setting, this farmhouse was once lived in by the same family for decades. With its soul and wooden beams remaining intact, La Retraite des Artisans has been lovingly transformed into a beautiful, comfortable, contemporary and light filled home which encourages its guests to relax to the sound of cicadas and soak in the beauty of a wonderful part of Provence.

This air-conditioned retreat is ideal for a large party of family or friends who are sure to enjoy socialising together in the spacious kitchen-diner or next to the living room bar. Take a break from the group in the mezzanine with its video games, billiards and TV, admire the views from the wellness area’s jacuzzi or read a book with a glass of wine beneath the shade of the centuries old plane tree or on the charming south facing terrace.

The sense of space and light continues into the first and second floors with their five beautifully furnished en suite double bedrooms whilst children will love having fun in their own dorm with its five single beds.

Outside, wander round the hectare of landscaped grounds past iconic olive and cypress trees, and find the pétanque court before cooling off in the pool with its wonderful panoramic countryside views, furnished pool house and summer kitchen. Be sure to indulge yourselves with one or more of the extra additional services on offer such as the in house catering service.

Set near a small hamlet, there is a small village a short drive away providing the pleasures of buying local fresh bread, fruit and vegetables as well the chance to stop at a café or restaurant. When you are ready to head further afield, be sure to visit vibrant St-Rémy-de-Provence, where artist Vincent Van Gogh painted his famous “Starry Night”.

The stunning Les Alpilles Natural Park has so many opportunities for outdoor activities as well as idyllic hillside villages such as Les Baux-de-Provence and Eygalières. It’s also worth paying a visit to the fine cities of Avignon and Nîmes or heading southwards to Arles, the gateway to the Camargue with its wild white horses and pink flamingos. When the sea beckons, the fine beaches of the Mediterranean are only an hour’s drive away.

La Retraite des Artisans is in a rural location near a small hamlet in the Bouches-du-Rhône region of Provence(near the Gard border), around 8km north of Tarascon. You’ll find Avignon’s TGV station 20km away from your holiday home or fly into Avignon, Marseille or Nîmes airports.

Your rural retreat is a short 4km drive from a charming medieval village with its bakery, tabac, food shops, award winning butchers, restaurants and café. A little further afield, La Montagnette is a popular place for hikers with its rocky escarpments, slopes covered with aromatic herbs and valleys filled with apricot, almond and olive trees.

When you are ready to explore beyond, take the 25km drive towards vibrant St-Rémy-de-Provence where artist Vincent Van Gogh was inspired to paint his famous “Starry Night”. Many contemporary artists still display and sell their artwork each summer Sunday on the lively Route des Artistes. Don’t miss the renowned Wednesday morning market which sells a range of crafts as well as fine local produce.

From St-Rémy head southwards into Les Alpilles Natural Park, another paradise for nature lovers which offers opportunities for climbing, hiking, mountain biking and horse riding along its many well marked trails. The hills provide a fine backdrop to an area renowned for its vineyards, olive groves, cypresses, orchards and summer swathes of sunflowers. There are some idyllic hill top villages here such as Eygalières, much loved by celebrities, or Les Baux-de-Provence, perched on the rocky hillside.

Take a break from these glorious landscapes and head northwards towards the lively city of Avignon (20km) with its UNESCO World Heritage sites and fascinating covered markets. You may prefer to spend time in historic Arles (25km), another city which inspired the paintings of Van Gogh and has the remains of its famous Roman amphitheatre.

Continue southwards from Arles towards the fabulous Camargue Regional Park renowned for its wetlands, special breed of wild white horses, black bulls and pink flamingos with plenty of opportunities for horse riding, hiking and bird watching. At the edge, Sainte-Maries-de-la-Mer is only 60km away from home and has some fine sandy beaches.

If you love day trips, it is also worth taking the 40-minute drive to Nîmes, located between the sea and the Cevennes Hills and one of the most attractive towns in France with its well-preserved Roman remains and lovely old town and gardens.
