Sip a glass of Coteaux d’Aix wine as you relax beneath the plane trees on your characterful terrace overlooking the verdant garden, before wandering down the rustic steps towards the gorgeous swimming pool, lavender and olive trees.

This handsome bastide allows you to experience the Provence of yesteryear whilst surrounded by style and comfort. Admire the exquisite tiles as you step through the hallway before retiring to one of the sumptuous chairs by the fireplace and piano. The modern kitchen is brilliantly equipped and features glass doors opening out to the wood-beamed dining room, flooded with light from the elegant windows overlooking the trees.

La Bastide Provençale sleeps up to twelve guests across its six bedrooms. There is something for everyone from the ground floor double to the master bedroom upstairs with its bath and shower, alongside two twins and two further bedrooms with queen-size doubles. With varying sizes, you can expect discreet touches of character alongside artwork, pretty furnishings and charming shuttered windows.

The house is set in four hectares of grounds which, alongside the 15m long swimming pool, also features a tennis court and idyllic terrace for al-fresco meals. Embrace the summer aromas of rosemary and lavender, listen out for the peaceful flow of water in the bassin and hear the birds sing in this beautiful Provençal garden.

Passing vineyards as you drive, a traditional local village is just over 2km away with restaurants, shops, old houses, fountains and a Friday morning market. Other picturesque villages nearby include Rognes and Saint-Cannat whilst a visit to historic Salon-de-Provence is a must with its old quarter and pretty shops – look out for olive oil and ‘savon de Marseille’ produced in the town.

The historic beauty of Aix-en-Provence is only 24km away, a wonderful day out for everyone whether you wish to visit the town’s museums and Cézanne’s art studio or simply drink coffee on a café terrace on Cours Mirabeau.

Meanwhile, families have a wealth of activities within easy reach (from the nearby zoo and castle to pony rides and attraction parks) whilst grown-ups will appreciate the landscapes of the Luberon with two of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, Lourmarin and Ansouis, both less than half an hour by car.

In the Bouches-du-Rhône department of southern France, La Bastide Provençale is located in a picturesque rural setting just outside a traditional village south of the Luberon. The charm of Aix-en-Provence is only 24km away.

The village is just over 2km away via a typical country lane passing countryside and vineyards (the wine appellation here is Coteaux d’Aix). It is home to a handful of restaurants, a good sized supermarket and other useful shops alongside a market on a Friday morning. Walk around the village admiring colourful old houses, flowers and fountains and look out for events and festivities, especially in the summer months. Across this region there are some lovely walking, cycling, hiking and mountain biking opportunities as well as the very charming Les Poneys De Provence.

Other historic villages close by include Rognes (8.5km) and Saint-Cannat (7km) whilst Salon-de-Provence (19km) is a joyful town to explore, known for its pretty pavement cafes, medieval lanes, fountains and olive oil produced from the many surrounding groves.

To the north you can experience the beauty of southern Luberon from Lourmarin (22km) to Ansouis (25km), both classified as France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. Discover seasonal canoeing/kayaking along the Durance River, summer swimming at Étang de la Bonde and gorgeous summer lunches by the bassin in the picture-perfect village of Cucuron (24km).

Embrace the charm of Aix-en-Provence (24km) with its beautiful lanes, baroque architecture, characterful fountains and Cours Mirabeau lined with pavement café terraces beneath the plane trees. The daily food market on Place Richelme is a must for gastronomes, as are the patisseries selling Calissons d’Aix, whilst the larger weekly market takes place three mornings a week.

You could even spend the day by the Mediterranean coast soaking up the character of Cassis (74km) or enjoying the fantastic beaches around La Ciotat (75km) and Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer (83km), all just over an hour away by car.

Keen walkers note that the Calanques National Park is a paradise for coastal hikes whilst there are plenty of other walking opportunities close to Aubagne (61km) and in the vicinity of Cézanne’s beloved Montagne Sainte-Victoire (45km).
