Villa la Plaine is a beautifully reconstructed and renovated French farmhouse - and definitely one of our favourites here at Oliver's Travels. It is very secluded on top of a little hill in the deep Tarn countryside with breath-taking 360 degree views of farms, fields, villages and distant hills. The approach is up a long track, hedged in lavender. You arrive at the house surrounded by a large courtyard of compressed ocre gravel and see it all before you: house, pool, garden and trees.
The property has been restored and renovated to the highest standard. This is truly 5 star accommodation where beauty and comfort are equally important. The owner's goal was to make Villa la Plaine a calm, healing and beautiful retreat - and we think that goal was certainly achieved!
Plus, you'll get the 5 star treatment as well - because 3 hours of maid service is included daily!

What you should know…
- In a beautiful hidden part of France, so don’t expect tourist attractions or chic local restaurants - just the classic and unpretentious French countryside
- You have to travel an hour for any nightlife… But of course there’s nothing like a dinner party on the terrace table!
Property Features
You enter the house through enormous barn doors and find yourself in the entrance hall which is the full depth of the house, wide and high, and is also used as a dining room when there are large numbers to entertain. Next to the entrance hall on the right is the living room/kitchen. Spacious and comfortable the room has a huge fireplace that is a copy of the originals you will find in the master bedroom and study. There is a CD player and a flatscreen TV on a rotating arm so that one can watch from the living room or the kitchen. The kitchen is a chef's kitchen, fully equipped with every possible machine or cooking equipment one might need. The table will seat 8 comfortably. There is also a convenient pantry just off the kitchen with storage space, another sink and a large American refrigerator.
Beyond the sitting room/kitchen (to the right of the entrance hall) is the first guest room. It has a queen sized bed, a private terrace outside and a large bathroom. To the left of the entrance hall is the master suite with fireplace, dressing room and large bathroom with tub and shower. In the study is a large desk with internet access, fax machine, printer, many books, maps and information for local history and sightseeing, a TV, DVD player and a large library of films. Next to the study is the rear entrance hall with the stairway to the second floor and the laundry room. Along with an external ping pong table stored in the garage.
Upstairs there are two large double bedrooms, one with twin beds and the other with a large queen sized bed. Each has its own bathroom. One bathroom has a shower and the other a bath. The house has been furnished with many lovely paintings and most of them are by local artists. The colors have been carefully selected to give a strong sense of calm and comfort.
The garden is on two acres of land and is surrounded by fields and rolling hills as far as you can see. There has been a considerable effort to make the house a part of this landscape without boundaries. The pool is 5x10m with a lovely covered terrace for the shade.
Location
About the surrounding area of Villa La PlaineThe house is located about halfway between Montauban and Gaillac, about 45 minutes northeast of the Toulouse Airport. Its nearest village is Monclar de Quercy, about a 5 minute drive away. Monclar has bars, restaurants, supermarket, bank, bakery and various other services (hairdressers, pharmacy etc). Montauban and Gaillac, both about 20 minutes drive, are the larger nearby towns.
Everyday in a nearby village there is an open market for fresh fruit, vegetables and cheese etc. The historic city of Albi is 4 km away with its monolithic rose-brick cathedral and its imposing Toulouse Lautrec Museum overlooking the Tarn river. There is fishing on the Tarn and the nearby Aveyron rivers and a beautiful golf course near Albi.

Region
A relatively new addition to France, the Midi-Pyrénées was created to surround the cultural capital of Toulouse in the late 1970s. You might think that its relative youth would mean the Midi-Pyrénées is short on character or identity, but remember, this is France we’re talking about – the whole country is steeped in history and tradition. Encompassing parts of Gascony, Languedoc, the Gers and several others, you’ll get a varied slice of the whole French experience here, not least if you stay at one of our beautiful chateaux in the Midi-Pyrénées! And if you want to discover the best of what the region has to offer, our Midi-Pyrénées travel guide is here to show you where to go, what to eat and how you can make the best of your break with some amazing activities.

Owner Profile
How long have you owned the property?
I’ve owned the property since December 1996. But it took me at least 2 years before I could spend my first night here. It was a ruin without any electricity, plumbing or definition of the major rooms. The roof had to be raised to make room for the bedrooms upstairs, before that there was only hay up there!
What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
I fell in love with the oak tree behind the house. They say it is over 200 years old but for me it is just the most majestic, magical tree. Also the house has 360 degrees of beautiful views. Unspoiled views from every angle.
Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
The most famous guest we have had staying is Kate Moss.
For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should really do, eat and see?
We are near Albi with its amazing cathedral and Toulouse Lautrec museum. We are also near Montauban with its Ingres museum. We are near Toulouse with many sites and museums and night life. There are hilltop villages, the nearest is Puycelsi with several restaurants and incomparable views. There is a market everyday somewhere nearby to shop for fresh, lovely food.
What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
The tip I have about the house is to relax and enjoy it.

Incredible stay!
The accommodation was perfect for both one disabled person and two young children (6 years and 3 1/2 years) with plenty of space to relax and several seating areas. A great intergeneration family holiday. A lot of thought given to various pastimes - so something for everyone. Violetta was amazing; very helpful, always at hand but never intrusive. She felt like a friend.

So peaceful, so calm, so welcoming, so perfectly
We are just back from our trip to France and wanted to let you know that we had the most wonderrful time at Villa La Plaine. You have built something very special - so peaceful, so calm, so welcoming, so perfectly blended into the stunning surroundings, so beautiful. Sitting outside and watching the colour of the field across the valley change from early morning pale grey to bright mid-afternoon yellow and green to twilight gold was a simple, unforgettable pleasure; as was watching the deer and the soaring eagles, and listening to the bird song and the hum of a thousand insects. One day we had storms - dark clouds, heavy thinder, flashing lightning, pouring rain - towards evening, though, things calmed down and through the showers a perfect rainbow appeared. Attached is a photo.
Thank-you for building Villa La Plaine and for giving us a fortnight of bliss we will treasure forever. We hope that you get to enjoy it again very soon. -
