Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Chateu Duras is ideal for families with children of all ages, offering plenty of space to play both indoors and out on the lawn. Being situated well back from the main road and with all rooms at ground level, this property provides a safe and secure retreat for young families, whilst older kids will find an endless array of on-site entertainment to keep them occupied.

Chateau Duras is in a wonderful location where families can enjoy quality time together whilst staying in this picturesque part of France with the Dordogne, Gironde and Lot-et-Garonne regions waiting to be explored.

Close to the banks of the Dordogne river, there are of course canoeing and kayaking opportunities nearby and a little beach for paddling in Sainte-Foy-la-Grande. A boat trip on a traditional Gabarre vessel is a lovely way to tour the river through Bergerac.

Near Bergerac you will also find a go-karting track, a waterpark and a charming place called Port Miniature where you can hire little boats on a small lake. Children seeking adventure can try out the tree-top adventure park, AccroZarbres, with a range of activities just north of Bergerac.

If staying in July or August, look out for the spectacular re-enactments of the Battle of Castillon that usually take place on Friday and Saturday evenings in the village of Castillon-la-Bataille, around half an hour away.

As well as long family walks, horse-riding and plenty of cycling routes, the Dordogne also offers a wealth of fairytale châteaux, historic caves and undulating landscapes of woodland, hills and vineyards. Yet for a complete change of scene, head west past Bordeaux and spend time by the sandy beaches and dunes on the Atlantic at Arcachon Bay or perhaps the popular surfing spots around Lacanau on the Médoc peninsula.

Owner Profile

Property Owner
Erica

How long have you owned the property?
14 years.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
Its rural Charm and Frenchness; it has a magical quality that is hard to describe but it was love al first sight.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
The border of the Bordeaux wine appellation was drawn around the property in the 1850s; it was owned for 400 years by the same protestant clerics' family, counter to the reversal of the treaty of Nante that disallowed Protestants to be major property owners. Paul Revere (Longfellow poem fame) came from here.

Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
We try to be very discrete.

What’s the strangest or most difficult guest request you’ve ever received?
A lady heard we had Dalmatian dogs and arrived with her 6 adult Dalmations to pay us a visit!

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?

Spend time on the Dordogne River

Really eat?
Food from the local Markets

Really see?
The local Vineyards if they can tear themselves away from the comfort of the property

Lastly, what insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
Enjoy the Chateau and find your own space; there is a lot of it. Explore the area. Relax and chill out. Try all the local wines and eat the local produce; it always taste better than anything you can get at home!

  • Birthday Celebration!

    Posted by Sheila on 09/07/2019

We had a fabulous time at the chateau and are now dispersed in different European cities. Very envious of your beautiful home and our chef friend loved the superbly equipped kitchen. You have furnished the chateau so tastefully and I loved just sitting in the lounges enjoying the books and pictures on the wall. I had exactly the family birthday celebration I hoped for. Thanks!

  • We hope to return again!

We had an absolutely fantastic time at Chateau Duras last week. Everything worked so smoothly for all of us.
We really appreciated all the attention to detail and the opportunity to stay at your beautiful home.

  • Great time at the Chateau!

The Chateau is such a beautiful property filled with so much character and history. We were fascinated by your vision for the property and admire all of the work that has been carried out there over the years. We have fond memories of our time at the Chateau and will no doubt reflect on these for many years to come.

  • Lovely!

The chateau is very comfortable and in a great spot with a great tennis court and pool.

  • Thank you so much for making it available to us!

I felt I must write to tell you what a wonderful family holiday we had at Chateau Duras. What a magical place. It was magnificent to look at and yet was so welcoming and homely. Our three families plus dog fitted in so well and the children absolutely loved it. We were together to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary (two years after the actual event!!) and the Chateau truly surpassed all our expectations in every way. We made good use of the pool and the tennis court with everyone of all ages playing and the pool was amazing especially in temperatures of up to 30 degrees a lot of the time. The walnut trees provided us all with much needed dappled shade! We loved the local markets in Duras and St Foy La Grande, the boulangeries, the butcher in Duras and also the various night markets and the brilliant BBQs at Domaine de Grand Mayne. We have brought home wine from both there and Les Hauts de Riquets. Jane was also very helpful with any queries and also provided us with a delicious meal on arrival. It is true to say that the holiday came to an end all too quickly and none of us were ready to come home!! We hope very much to return again one day to your beautiful home!

  • Fantastic!

The weather was not a problem. We had the most wonderful time at your stunning home taking full advantage of the tennis court and swimming pool. Being so comfortable we rarely found the need to venture far.... apart from collecting more provisions and seemingly endless amounts of wine!
Consensus from my family is that Chateau Duras is the best and we all hope that we may be able to visit again sometime!

  • Great place to stay with friends or family

Posted by Maggie S on 04/07/2017

This Chateau has the wow factor as you arrive and is a superb place to share with friends or family. The style is wonderfully French with all the mod cons of a good heating and plumbing system! And the grounds are so expansive that there is plenty of room for children to run about. Unfortunately the weather was not particularly kind to us so the tennis court was not used as much as we would have liked. I can thoroughly recommend using Oliver's Travels who provide an excellent service.

  • Everything was just perfect!

Posted by Jackie H. on 30/06/2017

We’ve had various family/friends holidays in villas etc in Europe but in comparison everything at Chateau Duras was just perfect & exceeded our expectations. The chateau is wonderful & the setting is breath taking with the beautiful sunsets. Importantly, we felt very welcome & comfortable there. The pool & tennis courts were excellent & the table tennis was competitive! Jayne was very efficient in sorting a cot out for our granddaughter.
Two of our sons are great wine enthusiasts & they had a great time at St Emilion as well as exploring local vineyards & meeting with owners. Our middle son got engaged during our holiday on a trip to Bordeaux. Everybody had a wonderfully relaxing & comfortable stay.
We have spent a lot of time in France & Italy over the last 25 years both in summer & winter but latterly have visited Italy much more. However, I think it’s safe to say that I’ve fallen in love with France again & in particular, Perigord - again ! I very much hope to be able to stay at the beautiful Chateau Duras again. Thanks for all your help & advice prior to our stay.

    Amazing Chateau!!
Truly delivers everything the website promises.

The nice side of the chateau is that it has all the amenities to accommodate the number of guests advertised - both in sleeping, entertaining and relaxing space.

Jane, who looks after the chateau, is great - accommodating with every request and full of knowledge of the local area.

    Cannot recommend the chateau more!

We were a group of grandparents to grandchildren and all absolutely loved the chateau. It's the perfect place for a family reunion. Lovely enclosed grounds meant it was safe for the toddlers to roam and various beautiful terrace areas made for the perfect post bedtime glass of rose!
