In this tranquil setting in the Périgord Noir close to Belvès, one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, admire glorious countryside views from your terrace and heated swimming pool.

Maison Tourtelle is a charming holiday home around a 10-minute drive south of the Dordogne River, ideally located for exploring this fantastic region. Sleeping up to six guests and all on one level, it is a great option for families or friends with two attractive doubles and a third bedroom that can be made up as a double or twin, all three with en suite bath or shower rooms. The living space offers plenty of room across its welcoming lounge and contemporary kitchen-diner whilst doors lead out to the pretty terrace.

Outside, enjoy shady al-fresco meals by the barbecue and dip into the heated swimming pool with the most wonderful outlook towards the Belvès valley. If travelling with children, they will adore the play area with a trampoline whilst all ages will no doubt appreciate the pétanque court.

This feels like a peaceful setting yet you are not isolated with the house situated in the countryside on the edge of a tiny rural village and just a 5-minute drive from the bastide village of Belvès, famed for its character, Saturday morning market and weekly marché nocturne in the height of the summer.

Golf de la Forge is also within easy reach, as is the pretty village of Siorac-en-Périgord near the banks of the Dordogne where you will find seasonal canoeing and kayaking opportunities as well as riverside beaches and gorgeous scenery.

Explore idyllic riverside villages and iconic Dordogne castles such as Domme, La Roque-Gageac and Château de Beynac, spend time in the stunning town of Sarlat-la-Canéda and discover the beauty of Monpazier. You could even drive to Bergerac for riverside cruises and wine tasting or venture to Cahors for more beautiful architecture and some of the world’s most famous vineyards, only an hour away by car.

Maison Tourtelle enjoys a countryside setting on the edge of a tiny rural village, a short drive south of the Dordogne River and the attractive village of Siorac-en-Périgord (5km). The 9-hole Golf de la Forge is also within easy reach.

Even closer, around five minutes by car, is Belvès, a pretty and historic village in a typical bastide layout which has been classified as one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. Here you will find narrow lanes leading to a picturesque square lined with charming restaurants and bars, the perfect spot to stop for a coffee or soak up the ambience of the Saturday morning market beneath the covered hall. Don’t miss the troglodyte dwellings under the main square and, if staying in the height of the summer, look out for the marché nocturnal on a Wednesday evening, a great way to sample good local food and wine.

Other gems of the region include Monpazier (17km), another one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ and often claimed to be one of the most beautifully preserved bastide towns, gorgeous Issigeac (40km) which hosts a lovely Sunday morning market and, crossing over to the Lot-et-Garonne, picturesque Monflanquin (39km).

Heading north, picture-perfect places to visit by the banks of the Dordogne are Limeuil, Château de Beynac, La Roque-Gageac and Domme, all within a 30-minute drive. History and food lovers should spend time in the exquisite town of Sarlat-la-Canéda (33km), one of France’s most loved destinations.

Further afield, the incredible pilgrimage village of Rocamadour (72km) is a fantastic day out, as is Bergerac (50km) and its surrounding vineyards. Wine lovers could also venture south to Cahors (69km), home to the world’s finest Malbec producing vineyards, and perhaps hop on a river cruise to Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, an idyllic village on the Lot River which is especially popular with artists.

Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Historic châteaux, fascinating caves, river trips along the Dordogne as well as canoeing and kayaking opportunities – the Périgord Noir is a wonderful region for families with children of every age.

The Dordogne River lies around a 10-minute drive to the north, just beyond Siorac-en-Périgord, where you can find canoeing and kayaking, some lovely walks and riverside beaches. Discover the beautiful landscapes by boat with traditional gabarre vessels sailing from La Roque-Gageac and visit some of the region’s iconic castles such as Château de Beynac and Château des Milandes.

There’s some fantastic cycling trails too, especially the voie verte heading north of Carsac-Aillac towards Sarlat-la-Canéda. In this part of the Dordogne you can also find Réserve Zoologique de Calviac, a must for animal lovers (as long as you can manage the fairly steep paths) and a tree-top activity centre near Sarlat with trails for an age of ranges/heights. Heading south, Parc en Ciel is another popular accrobranche centre with lake-based watersports in the height of the summer.

There are also plenty of family-friendly attractions in and around Le Bugue, just over a 20-minute drive away, including the old-fashioned Parc du Bournat theme park, Le Bois des Lutins 24 and Aquarium Périgord Noir, not to mention a wealth of pre-historic sites across the Vézère valley.
