Périgord is a region where the cultural, natural and gastronomic riches have made the reputation. This area in the north of the region is known as the Périgord Vert, the name coming from the forests of clear oak and chestnut trees, and the wetlands, and meadows that make up the landscape.

Located forty kilometers north-west of Perigueux, in the natural park Périgord-Limousin, and just 10 minutes from Brantôme, Chateau de Marineu is at the heart of the Périgord Vert, famous for its beautiful heritage, and its 1000 castles and mansions. You'll also find countless Romanesque churches and abbeys, picturesque medieval villages, along small country roads, and a warm, welcoming character.

Discover gastronomic specialities of the region, their walnut oil, porcini, and foie gras. You can't leave without tasting the black truffle, the wines of Bergerac, potatoes "Sarlat", walnuts, chestnuts and strawberries from Périgord.

Other attractions to discover in and around Périgord include:

- Brantôme, the Venice of Perigord, the Abbey - Périgueux (prefecture), its cathedral, the Périgord museum, Abbey Chancelade - Angoulême (40 minutes) - Bordeaux (1:30), the city, the wine - Bourdeilles castle - Villebois-Lavalette - Sorges, the truffle market - The Castle of Puyguilhem - Prehistoric Caves of Villars - Peat Vendoire - Nontron, its church, castle - Varaignes castle - Baroque Music Festival (August)

Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

  • Chateau De Marineu

    on 29/11/2023

The location, staff and service were all amazing. The location and place itself is very high quality and beautiful, but the team are what really makes the experience special. They could not do enough for us.

  • Amazing place!

    on 26/04/2023

What an amazing place to hold a wedding. We were so lucky to be on the guest list and spent 4 days staying here. All the guests staying in the château and linked accommodation in the outbuildings, all beautifully restored, mucked in for some communal meals, but also with the flexibility of popping into picturesque Brantome 10 mins away, to savour the local cuisine in local restaurants on the river banks. Plenty to do at the Château, pool, tennis court or stroll and cycle the local countryside, bikes provided. The bedrooms are large and luxurious. Convenient to get to from Bordeaux, Limoges or Bergerac airports if you are flying, but take a decent map/satnav as it is off the beaten track.

  • Hautement recommandable

    on 21/10/2021

Hautement recommandable.
