The Guardian newspaper called this Chateau “One of the Top 5 houses to rent in France”. The Times said “its interior is as hip as its exterior is fairy-tale”.  Grazia Magazine called it “Kick your heels off comfy”, while Bella Magazine simply said it had “Lashings of ooh la la”.

Even though it counts Hollywood Royalty on its guest list, it remains surprisingly cost-effective. An oasis of urban cool and relaxed ambiance against a background of traditional, ornate beauty, the Chateau has space and facilities to keep any guest happy.

Within the Chateau is a bar, private cinema, 14.5m heated swimming pool, billiard room, music area, piano salon, voluminous dining hall and restaurant standard kitchen. Accommodation for up to 26 guests across nine huge bedrooms. Self-cater or let the Chateau staff mollycoddle you – you decide.

The Chateau is great for families too. There is enough room to keep kids out from under parents feet and many activities to keep them amused – jamming in the music room, playing around the pool, outside games in the grounds, a football pitch, ping-pong and games.

This is a destination for all reasons, and whether it’s a group holiday with the kids, a special celebration, family reunion or even a girl’s weekend, it’s a place you’ll always remember.

Good news! For a little extra, this property can be booked as a Vill’otel

Yey! Wait… what is that?
It’s the perfect combo of the privacy of your own personal villa, with all the luxury and convenience of a hotel.

What can be arranged?

This Château is all about space, style and welcome – warm, inviting and relaxed ambience in a gorgeous, “Turrets and Tower” fairy-tale castle. And enough room – even in a party of 26 - to escape from the hubbub for a bit of peace and quiet when you choose.

The Chateau’s chic interiors have been featured in design and travel magazines all over the world. Nine bedrooms, all large, individually designed and furnished with style, and bathrooms that are all testaments to decadence and pampering.

A firm favourite with younger guests, one bedroom is a very chic and stylish “dorm” with four single beds and huge flat screen TV and DVD player – great fun for kids, and it gives them a bit of space of their own away from those noisy and disruptive adults! There are six additional beds which may be added to any of the bedrooms, providing accommodation for 26 in total.

Every bedroom has a flat screen TV and DVD player, hair dryer, bath robes and crisp white cotton bed linen, whilst every bathroom has complimentary bathing products and big fluffy towels.

There are three huge salons to relax in – each opening onto the rear terrace with its bistro tables and parasols. The Stone Salon includes a bar which can be stocked for you or supplied dry for you to stock yourself. The Piano Salon has a Baby Grand for those wishing to get musically creative, while the White Salon is a calm and relaxed space to simply sit and contemplate the formal gardens.

The private cinema has a nine foot screen and surround sound system. The extensive DVD library can also be raided for watching in the privacy of your room, there is Wi-Fi, satellite TV, and there’s a music area with amps and guitars for the more tuneful guests, while the Billiard Room contains a full size American Pool Table.

The five acres of private grounds include a 14.5m heated Swimming Pool, formal gardens perfect for a picnic or barbecue, and two terraces for al-fresco dining.

There is also a huge Dining Hall with tables to seat all your guests in one go of you wish, perfect for everyone – kids included – to eat together. And of course there is a kitchen, fully equipped and restaurant standard for those wishing to be Chef for a while. If you want a break from the cooking, the Chateau can cater for you – anything from a one-off celebration meal to full board every day. And within the hire rate is a housekeeping service provided for a couple of hours each day, which you can increase should you wish.

Owner Profile

How long have you owned the property?
We have owned the property for 13 years, and after two years of renovation, have hired it out as a holiday home for 11 years.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
The Chateau is everything you'd expect of a chateau – enclosed grounds, turrets, a tower, all built of stone – but it is also amazingly light due to its huge windows and many French doors. It sits in five acres of its own private grounds, but is on the edge of a small village so it isn't isolated and there is the opportunity to interact with normal everyday French village life.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?

There has been a Chateau on this site since the 14th century. And when we get some free time, I have promised myself I will research its history.

Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
Quite a few, but we tend not to over-promote this. Guests have included, among others, Brad and Angelina for a two week family holiday away from the paparazzi. Garth Jennings, film director. Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano, film directors/writers. Cédric Klapisch, Film Director/Writer.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?

Drink local country wine or cognac.

Really eat?
Local Foie Gras

Really see?
See the sunflowers

The region is stuffed with pretty, unspoiled village and towns, nestled in rolling countryside spread with vineyards. Cycling is fabulous here with miles of public rights of way and tracks through the countryside, plus a network of "voie verts" (where old railway lines are converted to cycle tracks) – there is one which runs right behind the Chateau, with flat, safe cycling in dappled sunshine.

What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
Go to Angouleme in the evening. The old quarter of the city (called the Plateau) is cobbled and car free, with a maze of old streets around the old covered market, where many, many cafes, bars and restaurants spill out onto the narrow lanes. On a summer evening it is buzzy and fun, and very friendly and welcoming. A relatively little known gem of a town.

    on 09/08/2016

We had a fantastic time. The property suited our needs very well indeed and the owners were extremely easy-going and helpful hosts. Available when we needed them without being intrusive. The girls in our party got particularly excited when they found out that Brad and Angelina had stayed there a few years back!

  • The Chateaux was out of this world

    Created on 21/07/2015

Thank you so much for all of your help for our wedding. We had an amazing time and the Chateaux was out of this world. Nikki & Mark were the perfect hosts.

  • Lived up to high expectations!”

    on 16/04/2014

Great place for an extended family get together! We were four brothers, plus spouses and kids, 18 total. Plenty of room for everyone--people could choose to be w/ others or quietly alone--and the pool worked really well (althought watch out for lots of wasps!). That said, Mary's cooking was the highlight of the trip. It just made the whole time so relaxing to be so well taken care off.

  • Magical!

    on 16/04/2014

We have just spent the best 3 days of our life at the most amazing wedding of our son and his gorgeous wife. Nicky and Mark were brilliant, nothing was too much trouble for them. They were most welcoming when we arrived and that continued the whole time we were there. The food and accommodation were first class. The photo's don't do justice to how gorgeous the place is. It was a truly amazing experience. Thank you Nicky and Mark for making their special day so memorable. Can't wait to return.

  • We knew it was going to be a magical weekend

    on 30/07/2010

From the moment we first arrived we could tell that it was going to be a magical weekend. Turning into the driveway and making our way up to the front door was incredibly exciting. All of our friends and family had huge smiles on their faces for the entire time they were at the chateau because it is so perfect. It's obvious that you've been doing events for years because you are so efficient and made it look so easy! We would have no hesitation, in fact we thoroughly encourage people to have there special occasion, whatever it might be, at the Chateau. The memories will stay with us for ever and we are both so grateful for all your hard work - you thought of everything and for a second here and there I think Charlie and I actually believed that we might be the new Brangelina!

  • Our fantastic holiday

    on 29/07/2010

Thank you very much to you and Mark for making our visit last week so memorable. The family had a fantastic holiday and much of that was down to your hard work making us feel welcome and at ease at all times. It was a huge pleasure to spend time at the Chateau again.

  • Magical weekend

    on 29/07/2010

Well! What can we say... we just had the most magical weekend and the wedding was everything we had hoped for and so much more! Two very special, beautiful people deserved for everything to go perfectly for them and I know how much work they had put in to their meticulous planning. Your professional care and expertise was really outstanding and brought everything to a perfect conclusion for us all and of course we were doubly blessed with perfect weather throughout. Every comfort, perfect surroundings, wonderful food and wine, and just a stunning setting. We all had just the best, fun time and even our games of water cricket-***-baseball-***-football will go down in family history as will the 'pool' competition!! So, thank you both again. We will sing your praises everywhere. See you again when we retire and take our own leisurely trip to revisit the Chateau!

  • Perfect weekend at the chateau

    on 29/07/2010

Thank you for your wonderful hospitality. We had the absolute perfect weekend at the chateau - it is truly stunning, luxurious and comfortable. The decor, the rooms, the wonderful little touches were noticed and appreciated by us all. The food was also exceptional and Mary and her team were so friendly and efficient, making each evening get off to the perfect start. Our beauty treatments with Amy were wonderful and indulgent, and a perfect way of relaxing after all the exertions of reading a magazine by the swimming pool! Thank you all so much for making this weekend so special and memorable for us. I sincerely hope we will be able to return and relive it all one day!

  • A birthday to remember

    on 29/07/2010

Once again thank you so much for your care and attention to us for our visit. It was the perfect balance of helpfulness and unobtrusiveness and we all enjoyed your warm welcome into your chateau. It was a holiday and birthday to remember.

  • There is no better place!

    on 29/07/2010

We booked the Chateau for a week-long family reunion and we couldn't have made a better choice. The Chateau offers comfortable, modern and very unique accommodations, as well as terrific grounds with a large pool, private football pitch and gardens perfect for numerous outdoor games for the children (and young at heart). The surrounding area provides lots of activities, including cycling along a lengthy abandoned railway bed, cave tours, kayaking and cognac tasting. There are also many nearby villages with colourful markets and great restaurants. Nicky and Mark are wonderful hosts and they made our stay extremely relaxing. If you are looking for a week of hassle-free pleasure, there is no better place!

  • Over the top wonderful

    on 27/07/2010

We loved every minute at the Chateau with all its beauty and richness. Thank you for a wonderful week! Thanks for a lovely time. It was absolutely fantastic. Over the top wonderful. Cheers!

  • So many happy memories of Chateau de la Croix

    on 26/07/2010

We have so many happy memories of Chateau de la Croix and we always will. You and Mark were superb. I can't thank you enough. Your attention to detail is immaculate, and I can't even recount the number of times I thought about something but you had already attended to it. As a result, I was so relaxed and just loved my wedding day so a huge, huge thank you. To say it wouldn't have been the same without you is an understatement.
