The heated private pool is lined with sun loungers, and you have a dining area a few steps away. You have an outdoor shower and a gas barbecue, while inside you’ll find an impressive sauna cabin and a suite of fitness equipment. And after a workout, you might fancy popping up to the top floor for a soak in the hot tub, with its magnificent sea views waiting for you.

With terraces on every floor offering seating and lounging space, the house itself is impressive. A spacious open-plan area takes care of your living room, dining room and kitchen – it’s equipped with large, plush sofas, a flatscreen TV and air conditioning. The lively riviera resort of Makarska is only 10km away, sitting beneath mighty Mount Biokovo, which provides lots of opportunities for hiking. It’s also a fine place for dining and nightlife, while the waterfront and beaches are a big draw too. Closer still, Baška Voda has a few beaches of its own, a pretty promenade and several beautiful churches.

Promanja sits between the two and a scenic coastal road makes it easy to reach Baška Voda and Makarska. Its own beach is within a short distance of restaurants and bars, and the village offers pleasant walks.

On Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, Baška Voda lies just 15 minutes’ drive from the popular resort town of Makarska. Sitting between the towering Mount Biokovo and the Adriatic Sea, a place which was once a busy fishing port is now welcoming visitors to its beaches, spas and restaurants.

It’s a great place to get active, with mountain biking, water-skiing, paragliding, beach volleyball and lots more on offer. Lovely pebble beaches in the shade of pine trees are perfect for hanging out or relaxing walks, and you’ll find plenty of beach bars and cafés along the way. All sorts of Mediterranean specialities can be found on local menus, such as boiled frog fish, and tempting Baška Voda rafioli, filled with almonds, nuts and maraschino cherries.

Just down the coast, Makarska is a must-visit. Its wonderful sandy beach extends to almost 2km, while a Franciscan monastery and city museum add a little history and local culture. The city’s main square, Kačić, is the centrepiece, and impresses with the wonderful mountain views you can enjoy from its restaurant terraces.

You should have no problem finding places to go after dinner – Makarska offers all kinds of nightlife. In summer, evenings are enlivened by weekly Fishermen’s Nights, with fresh fish, local wine and plenty of fun and music. The town enjoys more than 2750 hours of sun each year, staying mild even in winter, so whenever you visit you should find the weather agreeable.

Walks in the mountains are a great way to spend your days, and you’ll find a few interesting sights along the way, including the holy shrine of Vepric at the foot of the hills, and the botanical garden, Kotišina. A recent addition is the impressive Biokovo Skywalk, a glass-bottomed viewing platform at more than 1200 metres above sea level. This incredible feat of engineering offers incredible panoramic sea views and is well worth seeking out.

Not far from Baška Voda, the glorious Punta Rata beach at Brela is another breath-taking sight, and considered the jewel of the Makarska Riviera. Nearby is the Brela Stone, a small rock island which is a favourite subject for photographers.

Region

Makarska, perched between the Biokovo mountain range and the glistening waters of the Adriatic Sea, is a stunning destination where nature's grandeur takes centre stage. The imposing mountains rise dramatically behind the town, creating a striking backdrop for the entire region. With its distinct Mediterranean climate, visitors can expect warm summers and mild winters, making it an ideal year-round destination.

The Riva - the town's seafront promenade - is a focal point of the community, where locals and visitors alike gather to soak up the Mediterranean atmosphere. Lined with palm trees and a variety of cafes, restaurants, and boutiques, the Riva is the perfect place to unwind, take in the scenic views of the sea and settle into the Croatian pace of life. As the sun sets over the Adriatic, Makarska comes alive with a vibrant nightlife scene. The Riva transforms into a lively hub of entertainment, with street performers, live music, DJ sets, and a chance to mingle with locals and fellow travellers.

If you're a history enthusiast, Makarska's rich heritage and historic sites will surely pique your interest. The Church of St. Mark, built in the early 18th century, stands as a testament to the region's strong Catholic tradition. The Baroque architecture and stunning altarpieces make it a notable religious landmark.

For a deeper dive into the past, the Makarska Franciscan Monastery, founded in the 16th century, houses an impressive collection of artefacts including ancient manuscripts and artwork. The monastery's cloister and church are architectural marvels in their own right. Within the complex, the Malacological Museum showcases an extensive collection of seashells, a testament to the region's maritime heritage.

The Makarska Riviera boasts a series of blue-flag beaches and crystal-clear waters, ensuring a perfect setting for relaxation and water activities. The most famous is the Makarska Beach itself, stretching for almost 2 kilometres and offering a plethora of water sports, sunbathing spots, and beachfront cafes. While sunbathing and swimming are the primary draws, you can also indulge in snorkelling, paddle-boarding, and jet skiing to experience the vibrant underwater world of the Adriatic.

Heading north along the Makarska Riviera, you’ll come to the town of Brela, famed for its pristine beaches. One of the best, Punta Rata, is often ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world. The crystal-clear waters and the iconic Brela Rock jutting from the sea make it a picture-perfect spot for sunbathing and swimming.

The Biokovo Nature Park, often overshadowed by the coast, offers a different but equally wonderful experience. Here, the rugged mountain terrain allows for hiking, trekking, and adventure in the heart of nature. There are several well-marked trails that lead you through lush forests, up to the highest peak of Sveti Jure (St. George), providing breathtaking panoramic views of the Adriatic and the surrounding islands.

Day trips to nearby destinations are also a great way to explore the broader region. The islands of Hvar and Brač are easily accessible by ferry and make for fantastic day excursions. Hvar is known for its beautiful old town and lavender fields, while Brač is famous for the stunning Zlatni Rat beach.

This enchanting coastal region, characterised by its stunning beaches, rugged mountains, and vibrant atmosphere, is undoubtedly a place that leaves a lasting impression. It’s a must-visit for anyone looking to explore the diversity of the Dalmatian region. Whether you're a nature lover, history buff, or simply in search of a relaxing coastal escape, Makarska offers something for every traveller.

Makarska is a great place for kids – with its wonderful beaches and the mountainous Biokovo National Park on the doorstep, they will want to make the most of the great outdoors.

Be sure to head up into the mountains and check out the Biokovo Skywalk – there’s no better place to take in the beauty of the Makarska Riviera than from this impressive glass viewing platform with its amazing sea views.

There are numerous fine beaches to enjoy along this stretch of coast, and the walks along the promenade are beautifully scenic – you can follow the path from Brela to Baška Voda, but if that’s too far to walk, just pop down to the pretty harbour in Makarska. Here you can still enjoy lovely scenery and stop off at lots of cafés and restaurants. Don’t forget to check out the Old Town too for historic churches, the local street market and picturesque Kačić square.

Perhaps a surprising sight in Makarska is the town’s Observatory and Astro Park. Not far from the beach, this is a great place to take the kids after dark, as getting to see other planets will be something they won’t forget. Outside the very striking observatory building, the Astro Park provides a playground for young children.

There are lots of wonderful areas of natural beauty to visit around Makarska. Sveti Petar Forest Park is a short distance from the Old Town and offers wonderful views across the bay. You can hike around the park to see the Sveti Petar lighthouse, and maybe stop for a quick swim along the way. Between Makarska and Tucepi, Osejava Forest Park offers similarly scenic highlights such as the enticing Nugal Beach.

If you fancy going further afield, you can reach the city of Split in around one hour. Croatia’s second city really goes big on family attractions, including an aquarium, a semi-submarine, huge playroom and a frog museum, while the vast Diocletian’s Palace remains a must-see.

Along the way, you could also make time for Omiš, a rugged, riverside town that’s water-sports central. You can also take zip-line across the Cetina Canyon, or find out more about Omiš’ pirate history – kids will love jumping aboard a pirate ship for an interactive adventure.
