The beautiful Wye Cottage enjoys a splendid countryside setting just outside of Builth Wells in the Brecon Beacons. Surrounded by rolling hills and dense woodlands, the setting is stunning and very peaceful. Builth Wells is an attractive town with many of its buildings built with stone from the local quarry, a good selection of eateries and the Wyeside Arts Centre which was the original cattle market and is now thriving independent theatre and cinema.

The Brecon Beacons National Park is a great place to get active. It is a living, working landscape which will definitely bring out your adventurous side. There are many stables where you can enjoy horse riding including the Ellesmere Riding Centre, Llangorse Activity Centre, Cantref Riding Centre, Tregoyd Mountain Riders, Freerein Riding Holidays and Grange Trekking Centre. Their herds of well-schooled Welsh cobs, ponies and cob crosses offer the ultimate in riding experiences through outstanding scenery. Genteel pony treks are suitable for complete novices and families who want to explore Wales on a horse while experienced riders can enjoy wonderful canters on hacks and full-day moorland and forest hacking experiences. The National Park is a great place for a day on two wheels. Cycling and mountain biking is a wonderful way to enjoy the countryside. There are a lot of different terrains including roads, towpaths, lanes and hillside tracks. If you don’t want to take your bikes, you can hire them in many places. There are also many options for watersports. You can enjoy the tranquility of canals and reservoirs as well as extreme water adventures including kayaking over jaw-dropping waterfalls. You can sail, windsurf, kayak, canoe and stand up paddle board. As well as the nearby River Wye, you can enjoy these activities on the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, the River Usk and the Llangorse Lake. The best river access points for canoeists are Glasbury or Hay-on-Wye on the River Wye. From both you can launch your own canoe, hire a canoe or join a guided paddle. The incredibly picturesque 100 mile stretch of the River Wye from Hay-on-Wye to the Bristol Channel has year-round right of navigation and is perfect for touring.

Hay-on-Wye is a town packed with bookshops and is famous for its annual Festival of Literature. There are so many beautiful shops including the restored Booth’s Books and Rose’s Books which specialises in rare and out-of-print children’s books. You can wallow in nostaligia and buy gifts in the shop. Another wonder is Murder and Mayhem, brimming with crime and horror books with two floors of classic detective and mystery novels. There are other wonderful shops selling second-hand vinyls and an eclectic range of retro homewares. There are lovely cafes and some fabulous cocktail bars.

The Brecon Beacons is a wonderful place with many activities that children enjoy. The nearby Wyeside Arts Centre is a wonderful venue for live and visual arts and cinema. There are two auditoriums and a varied live programme. The cinema is great on a rainy day plus there are many satellite live broadcasts streamed from the cinema. You can see ballet from Covent Garden and performances from the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company from Stratford-upon-Avon. The Brecon Beacons Mountain Railway makes for a great day out in South Wales. This heritage railway runs through the National Park based on the Brecon and Merthyr Railway which opened originally in 1859 and closed in 1964. Children love travelling on the restored steam locomotives across the dramatic landscapes of the park.

The award-winning Cantref Adventure Park is another fabulous family friendly attraction. It boasts an indoor play area, a pet barn where children can pet the animals, live animal shows, pony rides, bottle feeding of the lambs, tractor and trailer rides and pig racing. • We had a wonderful time!

    on 03/02/2022

Absolutely wonderful house - secluded but not completely out in the sticks. Excellently equipped with everything one needs - ample space. Very comfortable. This is now the second time we have visited - once in the summer where the garden was just perfect to rest and sunbathe, now in the winter where the cosy living room is lovely to retire to after a day full of activities. Really love the little touches - we celebrated a birthday and had happy birthday banners and deco, also welsh cakes and haribos as welcome (including milk in the fridge!). Tea present, sugar there, some coffee capsules for the coffee maker - thanks! Only thing to be improved - sun loungers for outside - even in the winter could wrap up and sit in the sunshine...... Perfect place to spend a wonderful holiday!

  • Fantastic

Thank you. The property was truly fantastic. All we could want or need. A special place

  • Already recommended!

    on 13/11/2021

his cottage is situated in a rural location adjacent to the river but within easy access to town and it’s amenities. The cottage was spotlessly clean and extremely comfortable. Centrally located for Brecon Beacons and Elan Valley in particular. Would not hesitate to recommend (in fact I’ve already done so!!!!)
