Location
About the surrounding area of Villa ManaA hideaway in the picturesque village of Babakan close to Canggu, this villa couldn't be more beautifully located. Opposite the entrance is a significant village temple, and beyond the gardens are rice terraces stretching to the horizon. From the rooftop terrace, you can get a 180-degree bird's eye view. Go on a bike ride with the villa's staff to get an insight into an authentic way of life that has remained constant for generations.
A great way to experience the impossibly green landscape is by bicycle. The villa is close to Canggu, where you can take a trip down the Shortcut, a beautiful path through rice plantations. Just be careful when you move to the side to let others pass, or you might end up in the locals' book of falls!
A great street to explore nearby is Jalan Pantai Batubolong, an up and coming enclave of spas and boutiques, cosy cafes and hip bars. Around Canggu, indulge in a soothing, traditional Balinese massage at a fancy spa, and on Sundays, head to La Laguna gypsy market for organic and eco-friendly products and traditional handicrafts, to the soundtrack of live music. A special place to practise yoga nearby is Desa Seni, an eco-friendly resort that celebrates Indonesian culture and art.
Hotel Tugu Bali is an interesting museum-hotel hybrid full of priceless Indonesian art and antiques. Here, there's also a fabulous award-winning spa offering traditional Eastern therapies, so it's an ideal place to spend a leisurely afternoon.
Bali is known as the 'Island of the Gods' and after visiting some of the mesmerising temples, you'll find out why. Take a five-minute drive to Pura Tanah Lot, a religious site perched high atop a wave-lashed rock formation. It's believed that the temple here protects Bali from evil sea spirits. Pura Tanah Lot is also a popular spot for sunset. To truly observe the power of the sea temple, visit early in the morning where you can witness a local offering ceremony.
A myriad of beaches with great surf are in the vicinity - the villa is five minutes' drive from Echo Beach, which has famous nightly beach barbecues. Locals and tourists alike settle down on bean bags at fashionable beach clubs to watch the sunset over the Indian ocean.
Petitenget beach is also a short drive away, home to Pura Petitenget, an ancient sea temple with twelve shrines and an impressive dragon staircase that leads to an expansive courtyard. Every evening, there are temple ceremonies on the beach and traditional dance displays - a truly mesmerising way to experience the rich culture.
