Overview

Chalet Apartment Self-Catered Ideal for Kids Walk to Village

Heading to the French Alps can feel like quite the adventure. These fantastic mountains dominate the landscape. In the warmer months, they flourish with wild, alive green. In the winter or ski season, they hide beneath layers of crunchy, thick snow, making them perfect for a range of winter sports. The area's natural beauty cannot be ignored and is rather arresting. Want to go snowboarding? Embrace the ski season? Spend the whole time eating fondue? This is your opportunity to indulge in whatever way you wish.

Apartment Rhodos is situated at the Rond-Point des Pistes, Méribel, the heart and soul of the area, making it perfectly located. You're close to the slopes and ski school and face a West exposure. Perfect for six people, this gorgeous luxury apartment has two bedrooms and two bathrooms and offers plenty of communal space for true quality time together.

The apartment has been freshly renovated and has since been awarded the Méribel label – a sign of distinguishment and quality. You'll find that everything is nearby including shops, restaurants and bars making it one of the best locations in the resort. If you crave convenience or want to be at the very 'core' of Méribel, this is an excellent apartment to pick.

The apartment is decorated in the alpine style, refined and elegant. The outside of the chalet is distinguished and forged from wood with extended balconies and a slanted long roof that, when drenched in snow, transports you to a snowy wonderland. It makes quite the picture.

Gather in the colourful dining and living space with its festive and cheerful red touches and animal motifs. Common animals you'll see represented are stags and chickens – both somewhat legendary animals of the area. The living space itself is vibrant and connected with nature, with a warming, inviting but also quirky style. It's the perfect place to unwind with a good book or a show on TV. Gentle lighting makes for cosy evenings.

The kitchen is a lovely space decorated with love and care and fully fitted so that you can self-cater with ease. The bedrooms are furnished with soft wood but vibrant bedding in rich reds and deep blues. The bathrooms are a clean space where the wood motif continues to pull through, and you can enjoy a bath for those tired and sore muscles. Unwind and make the best of this beautiful and inspired space – the perfect base for your adventures.

What you should know…

  • Méribel is the world’s largest ski area. If you don’t have much time and want to make the most of your experience, plan your priorities and any routes in advance.
  • You can buy ski passes on the day, but we would advise you to buy passes in advance, especially if there’s a popular route you really don’t want to miss!
  • Pack layers. Yes, the area can get very cold, but with so much activity, it’s easy to get overheated, and nice to have lighter layers when you’re back in the apartment. Pack sunglasses and sunscreen too – the sun is surprisingly strong.

The Alps can be described in a myriad of ways. Magnificent, beautiful, daunting, powerful, picturesque, inviting, dominating and liberating. The mountains indeed have a call that many can hear. They're also the perfect place to indulge in all your favourite winter sports during the snowy seasons when the snowfall is thick, crunchy and crisp. The pleasure of skiing through the flurries or slicing through on your snowboard is immeasurable. As the world's largest ski area, you can enjoy 160 ski lifts, 300 marked runs and 28 fun runs. Ski schools are a great first stop if the world of skiing is new to you. It can take time to become comfortable with the equipment, learn the techniques and find your footing.

What makes the area so magical is its eternal Christmas feel – the wooden apartments, the stag motifs, the heavy snowfall and the energy that revellers bring. It doesn't matter how you feel, the energy of Christmas is palpable here, baked into the beauty of the area, both natural and man-made.

Méribel itself crosses three valleys and dotted throughout are the eleven resorts of the area, Courchevel, Bride-les-Bains, Les Menuires, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, Val Thorens and Orelle, which can all be explored rather uniquely by skis.

Something you must try if you haven't before is the pastime of stopping to enjoy an 'après-ski' on any of the bars that flank the slopes. It's common for skiers to gather here to talk about their most challenging skis, exchange tips, let off steam and just generally have a good time. If you're a social butterfly, you should definitely stop by for this very unique experience.

Olympic Park is a thriving area which offers plenty of activities, such as indoor skating, cinemas, free climbing, bowling and hockey. But if you prefer to attune to a more authentic or slower pace of life, you might wish to explore Méribel village, which is the very definition of small but perfectly formed. With only two restaurants, a chapel, bar, mini market, bakery and ski shop, it's very easy to orient yourself. A very Alpine touch is the bread oven! See more of the Allues Valley by heading out to the beautiful residential areas of Mussillon, La Renarde and the Route des Chalets.

It would be easy to assume that Méribel is all about skiing and snowboarding, but there's much more to it than that, and you don't have to tackle the mountains to get your money's worth here. Firstly, there's a thriving gastronomical scene with many dishes based around cheese and dairy produce. There are also a myriad of shops that sell ornaments, decorations, preserves and practical goods and equipment ideal for sports fans or those who want to bring a taste of the Alps into their home.

Other must-do experiences include night sledding, which, when the night is clear, offers bountiful views of the sky and is quite a good way to tire yourself out for bed if you've not done so already. Other popular pastimes are the snake-gliss (simply intertwine your sleds to create a snowy snake), tobogganing or a lovely pony sled through this shimmering landscape.

The Resort

Méribel is a village with a true alpine heart. You won’t find blocks of hotels and purpose-built facilities here. Instead, the compact and lively town centre is picture-postcard perfect, and its atmosphere is quaint and fairytale-like. It is without a doubt the most romantic resort in the area and if you’re planning a couples holiday in the snow you’ll definitely want to take a closer look at Méribel.

At the centre of the world famous Trois Vallées (Three Valleys), Méribel makes up part of the largest ski domain in the world. Across the valleys, it has six sister resorts. You can either get a single-resort lift pass and keep to the fantastic beginner and intermediate terrain there, but you also have the option of purchasing a pass that covers the whole area.

The advanced lift system at Méribel will let you maximise your time on the snow and make sure you’re not waiting around in queues. With 67 runs to try out just in the resort itself, there is no time to be wasted. Just beware of the afternoon sun cutting things short on the west-facing slopes and prepare to get up with the sun if you’re after untouched powder. At it’s highest skiing point Méribel reaches an altitude of 2952 metres and the descent from this point is known to be one of the most scenic runs around.

Aside from the world-class skiing, Méribel is also known to be one of the liveliest resorts in the Three Valleys. Many of its residents and bar-owners (as well as plenty of its visitors) are expat-Brits who certainly know how to party. The après-ski scene here is truly top-notch!

When arranging the perfect family holiday, you’ll want to ensure all your bases are covered. Méribel makes that pretty easy to do. This is a dynamic, thrilling and adventurous place where your soul can soar as you scale the mountains, or you can sit back and enjoy a wholesome pony ride. Whether you’re an introvert or extrovert, extreme sports fan or fancy cosying up with some cocoa, the cool mountain air and scenic surroundings are a tonic for the soul and bring out everyone’s best. This is a fantastic place to get away from it all, delve into nature, and into a particular capsule where winter sports are the order of the day. That’s certainly what the area is most popular for, but not the only thing for you to do here. So don’t be concerned if your children aren’t keen skiers. They can learn at the ski school or practice at yeti park, or they can try any of the other activities offered.

Snowboarding is also particularly popular here and well worth trying too. Children tend to be very eager to enjoy the range of activities and experiences on offer. Others available include tobogganing, one of the more subdued ways to meet that adrenaline rush, or the very delightful experience of pony-sledding which is always widespread with families.

Don’t just limit yourself to the day either. Head out at night to enjoy night-time sledding under the blanket of the night sky. With good visibility, you may even see the stars. Little children can be amused in the play parks, and the Olympic Park is a firm fixture with all because it offers such variety. Here you can really do everything – enjoy the skating rink, head to the cinema, enjoy a meal, go climbing, bowling or watch some hockey. This is a great place for those who aren’t ski or snowboarding fanatics but still want some winter fun.

It would be a shame to miss out on the peaceful landscape of Méribel village. There’s enough here to keep you occupied and just little enough to create a truly comfy feel. Enjoy one of the two restaurants, pay a visit to the little chapel or top up at the mini market.

The residential areas of Le Rond Point Des Pistes, Mussillon, La Renarde and the Route des Chalets all offer an exclusive window into the true way the locals live which makes for an interesting contrast against the backdrop of skiers and snowboarders. Enjoy family time back at your apartment and know that you’re in the best place for an adventure.
