Overview

Chalet Apartment Self-Catered Ideal for Kids Walk to Village

The French Alps are an enchanting area of phenomenal natural beauty. The bewitching mountains are famed as the paradise of skiers and snowboarders, the ethereal chalets are beguiling when framed against the backdrop of the snow-drenched Alps, dancing as they do at night, and for those who aren't so interested in testing their metal on the slopes, there are quaint walks, opportunities for sledding, bowling, swimming and large-screen cinemas to enjoy as well as a thriving gastronomy scene. The French Alps has it all.

You'll be based in the heart of the area, Meribel, in a gorgeous duplex apartment on level 1 that boasts three bedrooms. The property itself is carved into a slope giving it a feel of being one with the astonishing natural surroundings.

The location is ideal for a family or gathering of six, as you're only a five-minute walk from the centre. At the very base of the building, you'll find the shuttle shop where you can purchase passes for the pistes.

Staying here offers an authentic mountain experience. Decorated in the traditional Savoyard style, you'll find touches of tradition, the cosiness of comfort and the warmth of wooden decorations permeating every room. This is a wonderful space to spend time together and offers plenty of room. Enjoy conversation in the snuggly living room, enjoy delicious homemade meals in your dining area, and rustle up your favourites in the open-plan kitchen. Step out onto the balcony to enjoy the sights that surround you – snowy mountains studded with trees and the breathtaking sky above.

The use of wood creates a light and warming space that's inviting and homely. Tiny touches, such as a painting of a polar bear and decorative cushions, create a calming and comforting sense of home. The open plan layout ensures key communal time, ideal if you want to reconnect after a ski session or a day exploring the area.

The bedrooms' slanted wooden ceilings are almost den-like – the perfect place to hibernate after a heavy day. Small balconies allow you to take in the views as you sleep and rise. Warming pops of pink, baby blue and deep blue create a soothing touch.

The wood motif also runs across the two bathrooms, but you'll also find a clean space here that mirrors the fresh snowfall outside.

Let your beautiful apartment be your haven for the duration of your stay.

What you should know…

  • You’ll likely know that the French Alps can get cold, especially in the ski season. But you can also get really hot when in all your gear. Make sure to pack a varied array of clothing, including light layers.
  • Visit a ski school if you’re a true beginner. The instructors are amazing and really help you build that initial confidence and courage you need, as well as a strong practical skillset for dealing with the snow.
  • It might not seem like the place for sunscreen but don’t be fooled. Pack your sun block and sunglasses! You can thank us for reminding you later.

The French Alps have so much to offer. Of course, they're famed first and foremost for the endless opportunities they grant for people to ski and snowboard and with good reason. But beyond that, they're a wonderful sanctuary for those who love snow and all things winter, whether your idea of a holiday is cosying up in a cabin with a hot chocolate, shopping, sampling local foods such as gooey and indulgent fondue, or spending time as a family swimming, sledding and taking in a film. The area's beauty is that it is a winter wonderland dressed in its best colours.

You're based in Meribel, the largest ski area in the world, a place where veterans and beginners alike flock with a sense of fearlessness (and perhaps some anticipation) as they browse the 300 marked runs, 160 ski lifts and 28 fun runs that thread throughout the three interlocking valleys. It's a wonderful place for beginners to see if snow sports are their forte, with over half of all pistes marked beginner friendly (look for the blue or green flags). The valleys connect all eleven resorts: Courchevel, Bride-les-Bains, Les Menuires, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, Val Thorens and Orelle. You can traverse one to the other on skis if you wish.

Slope sidebars are a wonderful way to enjoy an apres-ski once you've traversed the slopes and are a notoriously favourite pastime for so many. Head to the hamlet of Meribel village for a touch of quaintness. Here you'll find two restaurants, a chapel, a bakery, a mini market, a bar, a ski pass shop and also, rather charmingly, a bread oven.

Exploring those views by ski lift is also great fun, and there's much to explore in the residential areas of Mussillon, La Renarde and the Route des Chalets if you want a look at how the people of the Allues live.

Enjoy the lively atmosphere with a toboggan run or a visit to yeti park, ideal if you have little ones who want to practice their skiing. Meribel is beautiful in such contrasting ways depending on whether it's day or night, so why not explore life beneath the stars by sledding under the night sky? For something more unusual, try the snake-gliss. You interlock your sleds to form a snake of sorts as you move about the snow. Something truly magical to enjoy is pony sledding – let these majestic creatures move you about some truly fantastic routes. And Olympic Park is a favourite for all with its range of activities, including swimming, cinemas, hockey, bowling and open-access climbing.

The Resort

Méribel is a village with a true alpine heart. You won’t find blocks of hotels and purpose-built facilities here. Instead, the compact and lively town centre is picture-postcard perfect, and its atmosphere is quaint and fairytale-like. It is without a doubt the most romantic resort in the area and if you’re planning a couples holiday in the snow you’ll definitely want to take a closer look at Méribel.

At the centre of the world famous Trois Vallées (Three Valleys), Méribel makes up part of the largest ski domain in the world. Across the valleys, it has six sister resorts. You can either get a single-resort lift pass and keep to the fantastic beginner and intermediate terrain there, but you also have the option of purchasing a pass that covers the whole area.

The advanced lift system at Méribel will let you maximise your time on the snow and make sure you’re not waiting around in queues. With 67 runs to try out just in the resort itself, there is no time to be wasted. Just beware of the afternoon sun cutting things short on the west-facing slopes and prepare to get up with the sun if you’re after untouched powder. At it’s highest skiing point Méribel reaches an altitude of 2952 metres and the descent from this point is known to be one of the most scenic runs around.

Aside from the world-class skiing, Méribel is also known to be one of the liveliest resorts in the Three Valleys. Many of its residents and bar-owners (as well as plenty of its visitors) are expat-Brits who certainly know how to party. The après-ski scene here is truly top-notch!

Everything a family could want is here in Meribel. It's an electric atmosphere that brings out everyone's inner child. The pristine natural beauty bleeds into rugged majesty as the mountains slide into slopes and trees, and chalets seem to burst forth from the ground. With such a range of people visiting the area, you'll get your fill of friends, families and other groups who simply want to have a good time. What that good time might look like can take many forms.

It might be that you want to ski or snowboard. Head to a ski school and then to a Yeti park – the ideal spot for children who want to enjoy this snowy paradise. Here your little ones will develop the skillset they need to manage their skis and the demanding conditions. Fortunately, children tend to be very apt skiers, quick to learn and with endless stamina. They certainly tend to complain less about sore muscles than their parents.

You may also wish to try snowboarding or a range of other snowy activities, including tobogganing or pony-sledding. You can enjoy a night-time sledding experience which is something especially magical to do and something that comes well recommended. It doesn't need to be daylight to enjoy the area's magic. There are also many play parks and of course, the entertaining Olympic Park, where you can do whatever you please, whether that be watching a film, bowling or enjoying some tasty treats.

There's a lot of delicious food to enjoy in the area, the most famous of which is fondue, and indeed, many others are cheese-based too!

Quieter and quainter areas include Meribel Village's beautiful bare essentials – two restaurants, a mini-market, bakery, bar, chapel and bread oven. It's easy to navigate and makes for a truly cosy experience.

Head to Le Rond Point Des Pistes to enjoy the aesthetics of the homes and the mountains as well as the residential areas of Mussillon, La Renarde and the Route des Chalets.

Return to your apartment and get tucked in for a soothing night, settle on the couch with the TV on or an indulgent family meal or sit out on the balcony and take it all in.
