Location
About the surrounding area of Arco da MoradiaOne of the oldest parishes on the Island, the beautiful village of Calheta sits in a picturesque bay on the southwest of the Island of Madeira. This pretty area is a very popular spot due to its beautiful sandy beaches and crystal-clear water, where many activities from snorkelling and canoeing to surfing and windsurfing are all on offer, ensuring the whole family are kept entertained. The area also boasts wonderful historic churches and access to stunning levada trails. And for something a little different, the sugar cane museum and working factory is well worth a visit, where you’ll enjoy a slice of delicious traditional honey cake and glass of Poncha on your way round.
38km east you’ll discover Madeira’s historic capital Funchal, amidst banana plantations and wonderful gardens where flowers bloom all year round in the shelter of the verdant mountains. Funchal is a beautiful city, relaxed by day and exciting by night. You’ll love to amble along its picturesque seafront promenade enjoying a drink in one of its many beachfront bars. From here take the cable car to Monte, where you can visit the world-renowned Monte Palace Tropical Garden. And to get back to the Old Town from Monte don’t miss sliding down the steep hill on a traditional wicker toboggan! Once in the old town, be sure to visit some of the fabulous restaurants serving mouth-watering skewered meats, alongside exquisite tapas and heavenly desserts such as honey cake and passion fruit pudding. Football fans will also enjoy a visit to a museum in honour of Madeira’s best loved son Cristiano Ronaldo here.
There are a wide range of activities on offer on the Island, but one of the most breath-taking has to be a glorious hike along some of the 2,092 kilometres of narrow stone irrigation channels known as levadas, criss-crossing Madeira's lush mountainous countryside into the Laurisilva forest. In fact there are three stunning trails within easy reach of the villa. And for the adrenaline junkies amongst you, try your hand at the many mountain-bike trails that plunge and ascend this beautiful landscape, or throw yourself into some canyoning, which will have you sliding over cascades and abseiling down waterfalls.
For the more serene, a wine tasting tour is a must. Head to Camara de Lobos, a lovely traditional fishing village 24km east for a free Madeira wine tasting experience at local producer Henriques & Henriques. Or perhaps the black lava bathing pools of Porto Moniz, 47km north, will provide the perfect day trip, where the meeting of Atlantic waves and a prehistoric volcanic eruption has formed spiky rings of black lava rock along the waterfront turning it into one of the world's weirdest and most beautiful swimming baths.
However, you like to spend your holiday, Madeira’s year-round climate and stunning natural scenery, from majestic mountains, rugged cliffs, lush forests and delightful flower gardens, will provide you with everything you need to enjoy a wonderful holiday experience.

For lovers of seafood, you should look no further than Paul do Mar. This is a village where most of the fisherman work out of, so you know you’ll be able to find the catch of the day here.

ABOUT MADEIRA
The island of Madeira can be found south west of mainland Portugal, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the island’s location, its is considered to have a Mediterranean climate that serves locals and visitors all year round – making it an ideal escape from reality at any point in the year.
What we love Madeira for is its seemingly ongoing festivals! Madeirans have found an excuse to celebrate most things; including film, their natural surroundings and key patron saints. This means that planning a visit during these days and even weeks of commemoration is well worth it (scroll down to see some key dates).
Madeira is divided into several municipals, each with a special offering to those who visit this island. Our favourite two communities are Funchal and Calheta and these are where you will find most of our beautiful villas.
Madeira’s landscape extends much more than a striking coastline. Make sure you pack some hiking boots and venture inland during your stay. With mountainous trails along Vereda do Arieiro, or more countryside appropriate paths like Levada do Risco and waterfall chasing treks like Levada do Caldeirao Verde – this archipelago has everything a keen outdoors person requires.
For those who enjoy either playing or watching sports, you’ll be happy to know Madeira offers so much selection. Madeira is also home to three notable football clubs, so if you’re visiting during the football season and want to see a good quality of football, you have every chance to. Porto Santo Golfe is the island’s renowned golf course. With an 18-hole course (Par 72) overlooking a Galapagos-like backdrop, golf enthusiasts will certainly want a ‘slice’ of the action! Surfers can access some great beaches like Jardim do Mar, Ponta Pequena, Paul do Mar, and Fajã da Ovelha in order to find some swell. Or, if you’re simply looking to recline on a sun lounger and soak up some rays, whilst listening to crystal clear waves break as they hit the shores, you will find plenty of man-made beaches & Lidos created for your leisure!
With a superb climate, close proximity to the coastline, wonderful cuisine, charming locals and astonishing scenery – this is a fabulous holiday choice for families & friends.
But while you're enjoying one of our fantastic villas in Madeira, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we've put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesArco da Moradia is the perfect villa for any family. They will love the spacious open plan living room with all mod-cons, and a fantastic outdoor pool in which to play
The proximity to picturesque Calheta means a variety of activities are on offer from snorkelling and canoeing to surfing and windsurfing as well as some beautiful hiking trails
A fantastic lido can be found in Funchal, providing safe swimming opportunities for kids of any age
Beaches – Calheta boasts a lovely man-made sandy beach, ideal for families
Santa Maria de Colombo Boat trip - Looking straight out of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ the Santa Maria is a replica of Christopher Colombus’s ship that kids will absolutely love. The boat leaves twice a day for a trip out to sea looking to spot dolphins and whales. In the summer the boat will often drop anchor so you can jump in to the sea to cool off.
Whale Museum, Canical - The whale museum or Museu da Baleia is around 20 minutes-drive past the airport in a sleepy little fishing village. With audio sets (for adults and kids), it’s a great little place for a visit.
Cable Car ride, Funchal – This 20-minute cable car ride is a fantastic way to see the beautiful Island of Madeira from above and children will love spotting things as you travel up the mountain. The Monte Gardens at the top are also a great way to cool off in the Summer as they are so shaded, they also boast some wonderful ornamental gardens.
Toboggan ride, Funchal - If you take the cable car to the top of the main hill in Funchal one of the traditional ways to come back down again is by a wicker toboggan. Children will love this hair-raising activity!
Outdoor pools - Madeira’s outdoor pools are spectacular. The most famous, at Porto Moniz, are a lovely collection of natural swimming pools formed by volcanic lava. There is also a children’s pool here.
The Madeira Theme Park, Santana – This magnificent space is dedicated to the history, science and tradition of the Madeira Islands. A replica of the Monte train, traditional oxcarts and nets, a traditional Santana house, a windmill, a maze and even a lake are some of the Park’s fantastic attractions.
São Vicente Caves - The caves at São Vicente were formed when the lava from the volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago forced the hot liquid through the rock. Now it is possible to walk through some of these passageways which give a fascinating insight in to the geology of the area. There is a great museum and 3D cinema as part of the experience.
The Madeira Skywalk, Cabo Girão - Stand on the glass over 560 metres above the sea for draw-dropping views down the cliffs.

A Dream Vacation!
A magnificent place and a breathtaking view of the cliffs and the ocean, a comfortable and very well-appointed house surrounded by banana trees, everything is there for a successful stay!
-
It's a damned fine villa!
We really like Arco da Moradia, we have stayed there three years running in February. The recent change of ownership has brought some nice improvements, with more contemporary furniture, a better living area layout, a modernised kitchen and most importantly heating for the swimming pool. There's a choice of areas to sit outside, and the garden is lovely.
