As you arrive at Moradia Formosa, it feels as though you have escaped the hustle and bustle and found yourself a romantic retreat away from the crowds. Yet with the beaches, restaurants and designer shops of Carvahal village all within a ten-minute walk, this really is the best of both worlds! Carvalhal is one of the seven villages that make up Herdade da Comporta, making this area a brilliant base for exploring some of Portugal’s best spots.

Carvalhal offers up an array of exciting cafes, bars and restaurants alongside designer shops and antique stores. Morning ambling around the village centre, window shopping and picking up bits and pieces of memorabilia for your trip are wonderful, followed by afternoons at the beach or out on boat trips exploring the coast. There are two gorgeous beaches, Praia do Carvalhal and Praia do Pego, both of which you can walk to from the villa itself.

This location is fantastic for its variety. If you enjoy lazy days on the beach and at the villa, then that is very accessible. There are also plenty of options for outdoor activities. For golf lovers, Comporta is the place for you, the fantastic Comporta Dunes course was designed by David McLay Kidd within a stunning terrain of pine forest and sand dunes close to Pego beach. Troia championship golf course is also nearby, designed by the famous golf architect Robert Trent Jones. For budding surfers, Comporta’s magnificent surfing beaches boast two surf schools which offer courses for all ages and levels. Balance is obviously key, so we would top off all that activity with a trip to the delightful Spa Oryza.

Comporta is known for its vineyards and wine production, producing some delicious white, red and rose wines. The town's rich history dates back to the Roman Empire, and there is evidence of that history woven throughout agriculture and architecture. Located at the base of the Troia peninsula and at the side of the Sado estuary, Comporta can be reached within a fifteen-minute drive.

A little further along the coast, at a 75-minute drive, you will reach the vibrant, cosmopolitan city of Lisbon. Food, music and wine enliven this beautiful city, and a day trip or overnight stay is highly recommended. Whether it is the taste of the renowned Portuguese custard tarts or the colours of the trams, it is easy to take inspiration from Lisbon.

THE REGION

Comporta is surrounded by rice paddies, the ocean, sand dunes and pine forests. It's a unique place where you can connect with nature and live in the moment. Comporta has a rhythm and an ambience that are all it's own. This wild and unspoilt part of Portugal attracts an in-the-know international crowd, including renowned artists, designers, and A-listers.

Comporta has a remarkable diversity of natural systems with long stretches of beach, windswept dunes, scenic pine forests, salt marshes and rice paddies which become a vibrant green in June. The region is also characterized by rice fields and its main attraction, the Comporta beach: 20 kilometres of uninterrupted white sand, a beach lover’s paradise.

As with the rest of Portugal, you can expect sun-blessed weather year-round in Comporta. The best months of the year to visit Comporta for long beach stays are from June to September, while the spring and autumn months are still suitable for picnics or day trips.

ABOUT THE LISBON COAST

The Lisbon Coast is a sensational stretch of golden beaches, wave-lashed cliffs and vibrant seaside towns – but there's more to the Atlantic coastline than that. Delve beneath the surface to discover hidden coves, family-owned seafood restaurants and pristine natural parks.

The coast around Lisbon provides an easy, breezy escape from the capital, whose proximity has made it the stomping ground of kings for the last 1,000 years. In summer, Lisboistas stream into elegant Comporta and Cascais to escape the heat of the city; year-round, surfers hang loose on the coast, waiting for the rollers to crash down on the sand.

But while you're enjoying one of our fantastic villas on Lisbon Coast, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we've put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages

With one bedroom, Moradia Formosa is only designed for two guests, so it is not best suited for families with children. However, the area offers amazing activities and facilities for kids, so if you are travelling as part of a larger group staying at other accommodation, there is plenty to do.

Comporta offers an array of activities for all ages to get involved with. Make sure you bring your camera to capture kids' faces as they spot dolphins and enjoy the adrenaline rush of water sports! There are water sports galore, as well as the opportunity to Kayaking through the rice fields. The Vala Real is the main water channel, and there are many animals to watch along the banks. Tours can be arranged through Cavalos na Areia.

Boat trips are a brilliant choice for the whole family to enjoy dolphin spotting, enjoying sensational sunsets and exploring this stunning coastline together. For budding surfers, Comporta’s magnificent surfing beaches boast two surf schools which offer courses for all ages and levels. Horse riding is another popular option for kids of all ages, as children can ride through the rice fields or along the beach, taking in sunsets and discovering this beautiful area on horseback.

Although the steep streets and cobbled lanes of Lisbon can make it tricky to visit with a pram, the history and charms of the city are fantastic for kids to explore. The Portuguese have a very family-focused culture, so young children are welcome everywhere. The Oceanarium boasts a huge collection of marine species, including penguins, seagulls, sea otters, sharks, rays, chimaeras, sea horses, starfish, sea urchins, corals, sea anemones, crustaceans, octopuses, jellyfish and much more. Lisbon Zoo is full of adventure with Sumatran tigers, lions, giraffes, dolphins, birds, pelicans, reptiles and elephants. There is a children’s petting and feeding farm and a fun cable car.
