The property comes with a dreamy infinity swimming pool and terrace where you can relax in the Douro sunshine enjoying fabulous panorama. The estate managers will ensure your holiday dreams come true with exciting adventures on the river, on the estate and in the Quinta.

Deluxe River House is an award-winning architectural project that was developed by the architect Francisco Vieira de Campos who was also responsible for renovations of the Hotel and Winery of Quinta do Vallado. The winery itself boasts many awards and an outstanding collection of wines.

Quinta do Vallado and Deluxe River House are located in Valarinho dos Freires in the Douro Superior, close to Pesu da Regua. The enchanting Douro Valley offers a beautiful, magical landscape. The Douro River flows from Porto along the World Heritage listed valley. You can enjoy the Douro’s breathtaking landscapes on the river, by hiking, driving and even by helicopter. You can visit charming towns and villages and many fabulous vineyards, tasting wines and port as you go.

Your stay at Deluxe River House should certainly be combined with a trip into Porto and other wonderful towns such as Braga. In Peso da Regua you will discover the amazing Douro Museum which tells the story of wine production in this beautiful region. You can also enjoy Lamengo, one of the most stunning cities in northern Portugal.

Quinta do Vallado was originally built in 1716, one of the oldest and most famous Quintas in the Douro Valley. From 1818 it belonged to the family of Dona Antonia Adelaide Ferreira but was later sold, though it is still managed by descendants of the family. Since 2005, its doors have been open to guests wanting to stay in the Quinta with five suites being renovated in the main house and later a modern building was constructed with an additional eight suites. Now guests can stay in the idyllic Deluxe River House with its whitewashed, wondrous suites and exquisite views. Today, Quinta do Vallado boasts ten hectares of old vineyards planted between the 1920’s and 1950’s and fifty five hectares of vines that were planted in the 1990’s. It is one of the most visited places in the Douro valley.

The location of Deluxe River House is absolutely mesmerising, a place of great beauty, nature, isolation and tranquility. The stunning main building sits between the vineyard and the river, perched over a picturesque orange grove and the meandering river. Next to the main building is a very romantic independent suite. All of the bedroom suites are calm, elegant, whitewashed spaces which enjoy minimalist styling and the most fabulous views of the valley. Words cannot describe the beauty that you will wake up to! The beds are dressed with crisp white linens and the bathrooms are to die for! This is definitely a place for romance, gastronomy and wine tasting!

The living space of Deluxe River House is absolutely fabulous with sumptuous, contemporary furnishings, a stunning modern fire and access to a fantastic terrace. The kitchen offers top-of-the-range appliances and Quinta do Vallado can offer chefs to provide delicious meals prepared with vegetables and fruit from its organic gardens as well as the best produce found in the region. These can be taken inside or on the terrace. Just a few minutes walk from the main house is a gorgeous terrace and infinity swimming pool. Here the views are sublime. You can laze on luxury loungers enjoying the warmth of the sun and the glorious panorama. You will find it hard to take your eyes away from the scenery to read your holiday books but it is an idyllic spot to read and chill. A bar service is available at the pool in the afternoons with a fabulous wine list of course.

Deluxe River House enjoys a fabulously scenic setting overlooking the Douro River, vineyards and an orange grove on the Quinta do Vallado wine estate. The estate boasts 65 hectares of vineyards in Valarinho dos Freires in the Douro valley. The estate is close to the sun bleached town of Pesu da Regua, the region’s largest riverside town. It grew into a major port and wine entrepot in the 18th century. From this wonderful town you can cruise the Douro River and explore many of the regions wineries and villages. The town’s Douro Museum is excellent, the riverfront is gorgeous and the old town up the hill is very quaint and charming.

Other places to visit include Pinhao on the river with its wonderful railway station and ancient tiles dedicated to the cultivation of vines, Numao with its castle and fabulous views, the International Douro National Park, the Vale do Coa Archaeological Park, an open-air rock art gallery and Lemego with its Shrine of Nossa Senhora dos Remedios.

Just a short distance away Porto lies on the river and is home to port wine, street art and fabulous eateries. It historical centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Porto enjoys a fascinating history, a fantastic array of attractions and activities and a wonderful cultural experience. You can enjoy wine and port tastings throughout the city and especially in Vila Nova de Gaia across the Douro River from Porto. Caves Ferreira in Vila Nova de Gaia is one of the best places around, founded by a winemaking family in 1751.

Braga is the oldest city in Portugal. Its original name was Bracara Augusta, having been founded by Romans in 16BC. Braga is known as the ‘Rome of Portugal’ for its many churches. Braga’s Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte sits on the top of a hill with a 600 step climb. It is very beautiful, sitting in a park with beautiful gardens, caves and a lake. Republic Square offers a beautiful fountain and is the starting point of the historic centre. Other significant landmarks are the Torre de Menagen from the 14th century, the university, the Cathedral of Braga and the Biscainhos Palace which is now a museum. The food offered in the town is delicious with Francesinha on the menu in many restaurants. These are a type of sandwich stuffed with sausage, ham, steak and other meats covered with cheese au gratin and served with a tomato sauce, beer and chilli. Avenida da Liberdade is the main pedestrian thoroughfare surrounded by flowerbeds and shop windows.

Further north, you may want to visit the captivating, historic city of Viana do Castelo with its pearly white, neo-Byzantine Santa Luzia Church presiding over the city. Viana do Castelo’s compact historic centre boasts extravagant religious buildings including St Mary the Great’s Cathedral built in the fifteenth century, charming cafes, elegant plazas, incredible mansions and narrow shopping streets which open onto the banks of the Lima River. As well as offering architectural grandeur, Viana do Castelo also offers seaside charm. A little ferry takes you to the magnificent Cabadelo Beach where you can kite surf, bask in the Portuguese sunshine and wander along the wooden promenade.

ABOUT THE DOURO

A symbol of Portugal’s birth and growth as a nation, the Douro has long been the country’s lifeline. Leaving the pastel-coloured metropolis of Porto, venture through the enchanting countryside.

Following the winding Douro river east from Porto reveals one of the most scenic drives in Europe and Portugal’s premier wine region, the Douro Valley. With terraces of vines lining the riverbanks, Douro Valley holidays offer stunning hiking trails, beautiful viewpoints and a wonderful selection of peaceful retreats.

In the Douro, you will find quiet towns and villages, vineyards hugging the bends, castles from the time of the Reconquest and other places worthy of a stop to look far into the horizon.

Deluxe River House is ideal for families though with wine tasting on the menu for most, young ones will prefer some of the other activities on offer. The Douro Valley is perfect for hiking, cycling, river adventures, horse riding and visits to Porto and other historic towns.

Some of the Douro’s wineries have special children’s activities to keep them occupied while you are tasting delicious nectar. Quinta do Popa have a table with children’s chairs where they can paint, draw or play with toys. Quinta da Pacheca has a large garden. You can enjoy delicious lunches at many of the vineyards, suitable for the whole family or take a picnic.

Children love taking boat rides along the river, some starting in Pinhao, a village in the heart of the valley. There are also boat rides from Regua. From Pinhao you can take one or two hour rides, some with a complimentary glass of port wine! You might want to book a trip in advance as they are very popular. Families can rent kayaks or take a speedboat. Or perhaps a gentle electric Rabelo boat is what you would prefer.

In Porto, the Crystal Palace Gardens are lovely. The contemporary museum, Serralves, is designed by the famous Portuguese architect Siza Veira and has a huge attractive garden. You can take a boat trip to see the city’s wonderful bridges over the Douro. The 250 year old Torre dos Clerigos offers some of the best views of the city. There are 240 steps to the top of the baroque 76 metre tower. The city park, Parque de Cidade, stretches from the western end of Avenue da Boavista to the oceanfront at Praia do Castello do Queijo. It is perfect for a picnic and you can also visit Porto’s Sea Life Centre. The World of Discoveries Museum is interactive and child friendly with touch screens in Englist. It charts the odyssey of the early Portuguese navigators and famous explorers including Vasco da Gama and Pedro Alvares Cabral. It also offers a unique indoor boat ride through different countries. There are two zoos in Porto. You can feed the penguins at Santo Inacio Zoo or enjoy the tigers, leopards, bears and flamingoes at Zoo da Maia. The beach at Matosinhos, the town next to Porto, is a good bet for a relaxing day at the seaside. It boasts a surf school too.
