The town of Vilamoura is located in Central Algarve and is one of Europe’s most sought-after holiday destinations. Its focal point is the marina complex which dazzles with its fine dining options, stylish bars and a harbour which, in the summer, fills with million-dollar yachts, freeing up the owners to walk the sun-filled streets. The Marina is also a launching pad for a huge range of activities like parasailing, dolphin tours, fishing trips and jet ski adventures.

Holidaymakers who are after sophistication and luxury need look no further as Vilamoura boasts everything they could need. The glitz and glamour of the town combined with beautiful sandy beaches. The largest is Praia da Falésia (translating to ‘beach of cliffs’) which sits against scorched orange and chalk-white cliffs and untouched natural scenery. The beach offers decent waves for surfing, sunbeds, and watersports, plus a bar and a restaurant so visitors can make a full beach day trip. For hikers, the cliff-top footpaths take you the entire length of the beach and offer unrivalled views of the ocean.

Golf lovers will be in their element at Vilamoura as the town is one of Europe’s finest golfing destinations. Known to many as a golfer’s paradise, the town offers six 18-hole golf facilities of extremely high standards with top-quality facilities. Highly rated are the iconic Old Golf Course, Millennium Golf Course and the Victoria Golf Course, which is used for the Portugal Masters.

A thirty-minute drive away is the Ludo Hiking Trail, a stunning nature track which gets you up close to the salt pools of Rio Formosa and all its wildlife. The track is a birdwatcher’s paradise with flocks of flamingos and Spoonbills year-round. The track is relatively easy, coming in at 7km and will take approximately three to four hours.

For those who want to explore further afield, there’s Faro, the capital of the Algarve and home to the winding, cobbled roads of the old town which is surrounded by historic Roman walls. Daily markets sell fresh local produce, as well as handmade crafts and clothing specific to the region. Grab a picnic and head to Praia de Faro for a change in beach scenery, or take a walk along the Marina and soak up the European cafe culture.

THE REGION

Vilamoura has been a glamorous town ever since Roman time. Its rich history is still palpable as you walk its streets, coming upon Roman Baths and ancient murals all around town. These days, Vilamoura is still a high-class destination although it has certainly kept up with the times. Yachts dock at the large marina and travellers galavant the seaside strip hopping between bars, restaurants and the dazzling casino.

The local championship courses naturally attract a crowd of golf enthusiasts as well, and there is a large selection of other sports to enjoy in the area (including those best played out in the water). There is certainly no need to ever be bored in Vilamoura, but if it’s ultimate relaxation you’re after you won’t be disappointed. The town is alluringly close to Praia da Marina and Praia de Falesia, where the golden sand and hot Mediterranean sun is just about never-ending.

ABOUT THE ALGARVE

Though most people tend to see the Algarve as all about the beaches and a holiday on the Med, there’s far much more to it than that.

But while you’re enjoying one of our fantastic villas in Algarve, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we’ve put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!

The Algarve is renowned for being a family-friendly environment, and there are plenty of things for children to do around the area. Stand-up paddle boarding, tennis, diving, canoeing, cycling and sailing boat rental are a stone’s throw away. The Algarve has some of the best beaches in Portugal, and families can enjoy day trips with snorkelling, boating excursions and watersports all on offer.

Not even a ten-minute drive from the villa is Aquashow waterpark, with slides, rides and a water roller-coaster. For the younger kiddies, there are two separate play areas and adults who want to wind down can immerse themselves in jacuzzis or the lazy river.

A twenty-five minute drive will take you to the Zoomarine waterpark in Guia. There are several restaurants on the complex and plenty of green space for mums and dads to relax whilst the kids tire themselves out on the aqua tube and body slides.

A thirty-minute drive will take you to Krazy World Zoo in Algoz, an interactive zoo with petting opportunities for the kids. Feeding times and reptile encounters are always popular, and kids can feed dwarf goats, llamas and deer at the petting farm. There’s non-animal entertainment too. The whole family can enjoy a round of mini golf, splash in the swimming pools, enjoy nature play, get competitive at paintball, take a pony ride and compete at pedal karts.
