A historic city on the western Algarve, Lagos combines resort facilities with an introduction to the traditional side of Portuguese life. Relaxed and beautiful, the old walled city is a charming place to spend some time, and the marina and palm-lined promenade are pleasant spots for a bracing walk.
The 4 km Meia Praia beach is one of the area’s main draws, and the eye-catching cliff formations of the Ponta da Piedade, full of caves and grottos, are another big attraction. You can take a boat trip to see them up close, which is highly recommended. This area is also considered one of the best to see the spectacular sunsets the Algarve is known for, and there is plenty of wildlife to spot while you are waiting.
The city has enough to keep you going for some time, with numerous restaurants serving fine Portuguese cuisine, friendly bars and even some clubs, although it is generally much quieter and safer than the larger resorts. The zoo is a big attraction for the children, and closer than the many water parks found in the region, although these are still within a reasonable drive of Lagos. You can head east and be in the next big city, Portimao, in around half an hour. It’s an attractive place with a huge amount to see and do, including top-notch shopping and a pretty riverfront area where exciting events regularly take place.
Alternatively, head west and you’ll soon be in the dramatic National Park area on the Alentejo Coast – another spectacular stretch of Portugal’s coastline you won’t want to miss.

The Region
Lagos is a city on the western part of Portugal's south coast. The city is famous for its stunning beaches with beautiful rock formations and steep cliffs. The superb beauty of this charming city has no equal in the Algarve and is the reason why hordes of tourists travel thousands of kilometres to visit it every year.
Quiet sandy coves are sandwiched between dramatic cliffs. The sandy 2.5-mile stretch of Meia Praia caters to every water sport imaginable. And when you've had your fill, you can digest your day with some of the best nightlife in the Algarve region.
Drinking and good times continue to be a fundamental part of a visit to Lagos, and the fine array of restaurants, bars and local festas stand as a testament to this. The busy flea market fills the centre's narrow streets, which also boasts a Cultural Centre hosting various exhibitions and events throughout the year.
Lagos is equally suited as a family holiday destination; there are safe and sheltered beaches for your children, while thrill-seeking teenagers will adore the theme and water parks.
ABOUT THE ALGARVE
Though most people tend to see the Algarve as all about the beaches and a holiday on the Med, there’s far much more to it than that. There’s actually a load of fascinating culture and history, superb cuisine and enthralling adventures to be had, though we’d be the first to admit that the beaches are pretty special too, with lots of sand, spectacle and wonderfully clean water.
But while you’re enjoying one of our fantastic villas in Algarve, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we’ve put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!
