One of Rhodes’ must-visit towns, Lindos is found on the south-eastern side of the island. It’s well known for its sophisticated nightlife, with high-quality dining at rooftop restaurants a hallmark of the town. Lovely beaches such as St Paul’s Bay are another great reason to head to Lindos, along with sights such as the Ancient Theatre, the Temple of Athena and the mighty clifftop Acropolis which enjoys the most stunning of sea views.
A scenic drive of around 50 minutes will take you from Lindos to the capital, Rhodes Town. Here you can discover yet more landmark sights such as The Palace of the Grand Masters, as well as the vibrant new town area, Mandraki, and a host of museums, churches, restaurants and entertainment venues. Around the island, you shouldn’t miss areas of natural beauty such as Prasonisi Beach, the Valley of the Butterflies and Kallithea Springs.

Location
About the surrounding area of Villa PonticFrom charming country villages to big, bold coastal resorts, Rhodes offers plenty of variety. Richly historic and packed with must-see landmarks, there’s a lot you will want to see during your stay.
At the top of the island, the capital is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe. Rhodes Town is home to The Palace of the Grand Masters, the main attraction of this impressive UNESCO World Heritage site. Take a tour of the palace and you can see at least part of this huge fortress for yourself – there are often exhibitions and performances at the palace too, and you will also find Rhodes’ Archaeological Museum there.
Other notable attractions in Rhodes Town include the Museum of Modern Greek Art and the impressive National Theatre, while Mandraki Port is a pleasant place to take a waterside walk. Elli Beach and Rhodes Aquarium are just up the road, and there’s more of historic interest in the Street of the Knights, Suleman Mosque and the Roloi Clock Tower which offers a fantastic view over the city.
The best nightlife on the island, or at least the biggest concentration of clubs and bars, is found on Orfanidou Street. Alternatively, try the Rhodes Casino for a night out, or take in a show at the National Theatre.
Outside Rhodes city, outdoor attractions like the Valley of the Butterflies, to the west of Faliraki, and the Epta Piges (Seven Springs), near Kolymbia, are well worth a visit. These idyllic spots with areas of woodland showcase the natural beauty of the island to the full, and are great for walking. If you would prefer a swim, the warming waters of Kallithea Springs may tempt you – this beautiful seaside spa is worth the modest entrance fee.
If you’re after sporting activity, Rhodes has everything from scuba-diving to golf and horse-riding, and with such expansive areas of countryside, cycling is a real pleasure. Surfers make their way south to Prasonisi Beach, also known for its landmark lighthouse.
There are numerous fine beaches further north – Afantou, Agathi and Lindos are found on the eastern coast, while the quieter west offers up Ialyssos, Kameiros and Soroni. Faliraki is perhaps the biggest and best-known Rhodes resort. About 35km north of Lindos, it has a large beach and lots of family attractions, as well as nightlife.
Lindos itself is a more sophisticated affair, full of pretty white houses, rooftop terraces and historic treasures like the Lindos Acropolis. You can also take a cruise between Lindos and Rhodes Town, with stops at a couple of wonderful beaches along the way.

The Island/Getting There
Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands of Greece. It’s got a lot of history as it’s been invaded a lot by the Persians, Carians, Ottomans, Italians, and Germans.
Average temperatures go from 20’c in April up to 30’c in July/ August and down to 20’c in November. With an average of 85 rainy days a year they get sunshine for around 280 days.
The island is 90km long with Rhodes town at the northern tip. The airport (Rhodes International Airport "Diagoras") is also in the North (15km from Rhodes Town). Charter flights and Easyjet operate direct from the UK all season and out of season (Nov-March) you’d need to fly via Athens.
The Acropolis – The Acropolis that sits high above the town of Lindos is absolutely amazing and is a must see if you’re looking for some of the best views in all of Rhodes. One thing I should mention is that the climb up to the acropolis requires you to be somewhat active and able to climb stairs, lots of them. The trail begins through town and slowly but surely starts to get steeper as you climb the hill towards the acropolis. Once there, you’re rewarded with historical buildings dating back to 300 BC. Our Villa Corteau sit just underneath the ruins.
Rhodes has over 40 beaches, here are a few:
- Anthony Quinn’s Bay – Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the most beautiful bays. The bay is located 17km (10 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and offers some incredible photo opportunities to say the least.
- The beach at Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the best beaches in Rhodes. Get there early if you want to snag a sunbed and umbrella and enjoy wading around the bright blue and green water. Amazing!
- For the best views of Anthony Quinn’s Bay from above, head on up to the windy road that leads up the hill just north of the bay and you’ll find a spot where you can sit and enjoy the virtually 180 degree views of Rhodes and its coastline.
- Tsambika Beach (or Tsampika) – Tsampika beach is located 30km (18 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and is a great place to spend the day in the sun. Note: Beware there is a small section where nudists congregate on Tsampika beach
- Lakido Beach – Just opposite Anthony Quinn’s Bay is Lakido beach. It’s literally 3 minutes walking distance from Anthony Quinn’s bay so visiting both beaches in a day is totally doable. As a matter of fact, I would highly recommend visiting both if you get the chance
- Faliraki Beach – One of the most popular tourist spots on the island of Rhodes. It was known for 18-30’s holiday in the 90-2000’s but I don’t think there is that market so much now. It is quite commercialised now there are water sports and a few diving schools.
How to reach Rhodes island
There are two ways to reach Rhodes Island: either by flight or by ferry.
By plane: If you don’t want to lose time you can fly to Rhodes (RHO) from Athens. The flight lasts 1 hour. Many direct flights also operate from many European countries, so it will not be difficult to arrive there.
By ferry: If you choose to travel from Piraeus to Rhodes with a ferry, it will surely take you much longer but travelling with a ferry in the summer nights can be pretty enticing! The port of Rhodes is located in the southern part of the island and offers bus services to the town centre. You can easily book your ferry tickets using the link below or the booking engine.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesThere is a lot for kids to enjoy all around Rhodes. It’s a real playground and great for sports. They can try tennis, mini-golf, scuba-diving, or join you on a walk or cycle ride through the stunning countryside.
The beaches are a good choice for families too. The likes of Kolymbia and Agathi are a bit quieter than Faliraki, while pretty Anthony Quinn Bay is good for snorkelling. If you just want somewhere beautiful to relax, St Paul’s Bay, near Lindos, is an idyllic spot. And in Rhodes town, you’ll find Elli Beach close to all the sights. One of these is the nearby Marine Aquarium in the city’s Hydrobiological Station, with octopuses, exotic fish and turtles found at the most northerly spot on the island.
Faliraki also has a great water-park and the go-kart track, Kartodrome. To the south, in Apollonos, the Astronomy Café brings astrotourism to Rhodes, with an astronomy-themed garden and café, as well as an observatory. There’s even more to do in Rhodes Town, with many shops, cafés, multiplex cinemas and the relaxing Rodini Park. About 15 minutes’ drive from the centre of town, the Bee Museum of Rhodes is a hive of bee-related activity.
For a wonderful day out together appreciating the natural beauty of Rhodes, don’t miss Epta Piges, or the Seven Springs. At this stunning nature reserve, you can swim in the lake, admire the waterfalls or go for a picnic in the woods. In summer, colourful winged creatures emerge into the Valley of the Butterflies, another big attraction, where the Natural History Museum of Rhodes is located at the entrance. Not far away, the Farma of Rhodes gives kids the chance to pet and feed creatures including kangaroos, ponies and llamas – the ideal choice for young animal lovers.
The delicious food of Rhodes is another great part of a family holiday. Look out for sweet treats like galaktoboureko (custard-filled pastries) and loukoumadhes (honey and cinnamon doughnuts). With many restaurants welcoming, and often run by, families, you will have no trouble finding their favourites from home too.
If they like their history, be sure to check out some of Rhodes’ castles. Including the likes of Feraklos, Monolithos and Kritinia with their beautiful sea views, the castles are free to visit. Rhodes Town adds in yet more historic attractions, with the medieval Old Town, the Colossus of Rhodes and Saint Nicholas Fortress providing alternatives to the Palace of the Grand Masters.
