Seeing is believing when you vacation at Villa Alekmu, a private estate with a panoramic cobalt sea view, located in Kounoupas, near the south coast of the exclusive Cycladic island of Mykonos, in the heart of the Aegean Sea. This simply stunning property is built on five thousand six hundred square metres of private land, with landscaped gardens populated with one hundred year old olive trees, Egyptian palms, extensive vineyards, and a Bostani, where you can pick your own fruit and veg. The eight hundred square metres of accommodation is made up of the main house, three separate guest houses, staff quarters, and a private church.
The villa has eight spacious en suite sea-view bedrooms, and can accommodate up to eighteen guests in some comfort and a lot of style. The property is perfect for a large family gathering, friends’ sharing, or to host a special celebratory event, including wedding blessings. The estate has an easily accessible paved road that leads to private parking spaces for up to ten cars. Villa Alekmu comes with complimentary Wi-Fi and air conditioning throughout, an internal and external sound system, and smart televisions in all the bedrooms.

This incredible architect-designed property had been constructed out of classic Cycladic white-washed walls, and local stone hewn from the cliffside. The interiors complement the exterior, with internal Cycladic stairways, with lots of curved walls and contemporary furnishings. The elegant décor is all white, with subtle hues of maritime blues, natural light wood furniture, and the French doors, that give access to the many terraces, have billowing white curtains, letting in lots of natural light, and cool sea breezes. The sea view terrace is host to an inviting beach entry style one hundred and forty seven square metres private pool, and smooth stone pathways will take you to church and the other independent properties and mature gardens around the estate.
Enter the villa at the ground floor level, where you will find a large-scale traditional Cycladic home, that takes holiday living to another level. The living area has a unique sofa configuration that can seat up to twenty five guests, and has a smart television and sound system. There is a sophisticated dining table that can seat up to twelve, which is adjacent to the indoor bar with four stools, and a wine cellar, perfect for preparing cocktails. The bar is connected to a fully equipped professional kitchen with an independent entrance and supply ramp. The kitchen connects to both the internal and external dining areas, the separate outdoor stone-built barbeque, and the pool terrace. The adjacent laundry room has storage closets, a washing machine, and a family-sized fridge.

There are two en suite double bedrooms for use by the villa’s staff, and a useful guest cloakroom completes this floor. Take the internal staircase to the first floor where you will find a second seating space, with sofas to host up to fifteen people, and a very handy shared coffee station with access to a large sunset sea view balcony. There are four double bedrooms, all with queen size beds, closets, desks, televisions, and sea views. Two of the bedrooms can interconnect, and they all have varying independent access to the lounge, terraces, balconies, and the parking plot. The magnificent master bedroom occupies the whole of the second floor and has a hallway, a separate seating area, a bedroom with a king-size bed and further seating, an en suite bathroom with two basins, a walk-in shower, and a huge balcony with stunning panoramic sea views. The other three bedrooms can be found in independent houses across the estate. Church House has a seating area for ten, its own small garden with a barbeque, sea views, and a furnished en suite bedroom with a king-size bed. The Garden House has a small living area for four, a kitchenette with a fireplace, a private patio with a barbeque, a double bed, and single sofa beds, with access to the Bostani. The Vineyard House has a kitchenette, a seating area for two, and an en suite bedroom with a queen size bed, with super sea views.

The estate is host to the most superb sea view stone terrace, with a huge private swimming pool, surrounded by twelve sun loungers, four large double day beds and lazy day hammocks. The side yard is the coolest spot on the estate protected by eucalyptus trees and home to a children’s playground. The Front Yard has olive groves, vineyards, and the Bostani, where you can pick your own fruit and veg, and where you can practice your ping pong on the table tennis table, as well as a seating area for twelve. At the top of the hill is the Greek Orthodox church, with unique sunset views over eleven Cycladic islands. The church can hold a wedding blessing ceremony for up to twelve guests and host a reception for up to one hundred and fifty on the property.

Take your pick as to where you would like to dine. There is an alfresco dining area with two tables, that can seat up to twenty five guests, with its own sound system, a sixty nine inch smart tv, and access to the pool and barbeque. The Votsalo Sunset Lounge by the pool has two dining tables to seat twenty, and is perfectly positioned with the best sunset views. The Camara Pool Lounge seats twelve, and is ideal for a post swim wind down. No stay in Mykonos is complete without a barbie, enjoy freshly grilled local delicacies cooked on the traditional wood stove barbeque, with an alfresco dining table for thirteen, and direct access to the kitchen, wine cellar, and pool, and of course those azure sea views.

Villa Alekmu is located on the southern tip of the island of Mykonos, part of the Cyclades in the heart of the Aegean Sea. The exclusive island of Mykonos measures only ten kilometres long, by fifteen kilometres wide, so wherever you want to go it’s only a short drive away. The villa is a few kilometres from Mykonos airport, which is served by both local and international flight operators. If you are island hopping, then nearby Naxos and Syros also have their own airports. The new port of Mykonos is a hub of activity for those landing and departing from island hopping ferries, or super yachts cruising the Aegean, and is a quick twenty minute drive to the villa.

The villa is near the resort town of Elia on the south coast, famous for its white sandy beaches, and stylish seafront restaurants. The nearby Agrari Beach is family-friendly, offering a selection of water sports, a playground, and cafes and bars, the south coast beaches have calmer sea waters than those in the north. Near the villa, there is a tennis court, fitness centre, and fishing opportunities. The coastline is populated by many beautiful golden sandy beaches, take your pick from nearby nudist Elia beach to the family-friendly favourite of Plays Gialos Beach, or party, party, party all day long on Super Paradise Beach, with its crystal clear waters, restaurants, bars, and clubs with resident DJs.

During daylight hours play penance in one of the eight hundred churches that populate the island, most notably Paraportiani, which is a unique construction combining four styles of architecture. Take a visit to Mykonos town, known locally as Chora, and only an eight minute drive from the villa. Here you can wander the maze of streets with the colourful Cycladic houses, and do some serious designer label shopping in one of the many luxury boutiques. Choose a table at a seafront restaurant and enjoy a dish of freshly caught seafood, whilst sipping ouzo and watching the beautiful people pass by. Find out the island’s history and culture at the Archaeological Museum, the Folk Museum, and the Maritime Museum, then go out of town to Lena’s House to discover how the islanders lived. Take a walk up to the landmark windmills, known as Kato Mili, where once the wheat was ground to make bread and is now a mini museum and residencies. Walk along the waterfront to Little Venice, where original merchant houses overhang the sea, and is now home to fabulous cafes, bars, restaurants and galleries, best enjoyed at sunset with a retsina or two. Admire the Armenistis lighthouse, still fully functioning and an essential asset of Mykonos’ maritime history.

No visit to Mykonos is complete without a day at sea, join a catamaran jolly and snorkel in the sea, or if you’re feeling flush, charter your own yacht and discover secret coves and hidden bays and beaches. For the romantics, nothing beats a sunset cruise, cocktail in hand as the sun sets over the horizon. Further afield the uninhabited island of Delos is well worth a visit, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the birthplace of Zeus and Leto, go with a group or arrange your own private tour.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Your kids will just love a holiday on the island of Mykonos, and there’s a surprising number of fun and family activities to keep them amused. Starting with Villa Alekmu’s private infinity swimming pool, with very east beach entry, and as there are no set hours they can play and splash all day. The villa also has its own children’s playground in the eucalyptus shaded side yard, and a ping pong table in the front yard.

All the bedrooms have their own smart televisions for those cooler evenings.  Nearby Agrari Beach also offers water sports for your older children, and a playground for the younger ones, as well as a café and bar. The coastline of Mykonos is dotted with family-friendly beaches, many of which you can book ahead, the villa is on the south coast, which has much calmer seas, and is safer for children. We can recommend Agios Ioannis beach with an infrastructure with pre-bookable sun loungers and parasols, cafes, and calm seas, Kalo Livadi in the southeast has views over the Cyclades archipelago and the island of Naxos, and Panormos Beach offers a great restaurant with giant bean bags. Your younger children may enjoy a visit to the Animal Organic Farm, where they can pet and feed the livestock, harvest seasonal crops, enjoy some time in nature, and keep themselves busy with some traditional farming tasks. Whilst your older kids could take a guided hike over the island’s landscape, exploring the local flora and fauna, ending with a cooling dip in the sea.

All of the family will love a day at sea, whether it’s island hopping aboard a shared Catamaran, or chartering a yacht and discovering secret coves and hidden bays and beaches, and swimming and snorkelling spotting friendly fish. Keep the creatives happy with a mosaic workshop, or a family cooking lesson with a local chef teaching you all to make traditional Greek meze. A trip to Mykonos town is a must, wander the winding streets, shop for souvenirs, meet Petros the Pelican, the mascot of Mykonos, and then enjoy a family-friendly meal in a seaside taverna. For your intellectually curious offspring, there’s the Archaeological Museum, the Maritime Museum, the Folk Museum, and Lena’s House, all within walking distance of the old town. A short walk along the seafront will take you to Little Venice, a pirate’s paradise of a maze of streets with colourful houses overhanging the sea. Tilt at windmills at the top of the town, the landmark of Mykonos, where they used to grind wheat and make bread for the islanders, now a mini museum and some are even residencies. The Lighthouse of Mykonos is seven kilometres northeast of the town, and well worth a visit for the stunning sea views of the island of Tinos, and to watch the boats arriving and departing from the harbour.

Who would have thought it, but Mykonos is home to the best Go-Kart track in Greece, open every day from April until November from 10 am until 2 am, which should keep them occupied all day.For those who prefer a more natural form of transport, they can mount a pony and go horseback riding in Ano Mera. If you want to venture further afield, a trip to the adjacent island of uninhabited Delos is a delight, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the birthplace of Zeus and Leto, Apollo and Artemis, cross the water by private charter or a shared tour for a fabulous family day out.
