If you are island hopping the nearest port is also at the island’s capital, Mytilini. Villa Avlaki is set on a hill overlooking the Aegean sea, with views towards St George’s islets, and Rabbit island, which you can visit.
The nearest sandy beach of Anaxos is a thirty minute stroll away. Other notable beaches within the vicinity are Ambelia, Tsichranta, and a naturist beach, for an all-over tan. The villa is just two kilometres north of the quaint village of Petra, an area that has been inhabited since ancient times. Petra is a haven of narrow cobbled streets, cafes, bars, restaurants, shops full of hidden treasures, a beautiful horseshoe bay blue flag beach, and the famous Ouzo distillery. Well worth a visit is Vareltzidiana’s House, a restored merchant’s house, full of local history. Overlooking the village is the delightfully named eighteenth century Greek Orthodox Church of Panagia Glykofilousa, aka Our Lady of the Sweet Kiss, visit for the views.
Nearby Molyvos, once known as Mythimna, is one of the most beautiful medieval villages and has been awarded protected status. The village is built like an amphitheatre, all the houses are made out of stone and wood, narrow winding alleys lead to squares with Turkish fountains and merchant’s mansions, that wend their way down to a beautiful sandy beach, a cobalt blue sea and a working harbour. The landmark thirteenth-century Byzantine castle stands proudly at the top of the town, climb the rocky hill and ancient fortifications, to be rewarded at the top with sweeping panoramic sea views. Enjoy a day wandering the alleyways, shopping for olive oil, ouzo, honey, herbs, and local hand-made crafts, visit the Municipal Art Gallery, and then sit by the seashore for a dinner of freshly caught fish, most notably sardines and barbounia.
Visit the nearby coastline of Eftalou, famous for its hot springs, with therapeutic properties that are reputed to help rheumatism and arthritis, with a big organised beach and crystal clear waters. A day trip to the capital of Mytilini is a sixty kilometre drive from the villa, a bustling town that is blessed with cultural museums and theatres, cafes and restaurants, churches and monasteries, souvenir shops and a harbour that can take you island hopping.
There is so much to see and do around the island, if you are feeling active there are lots of hiking trails, where you can discover the local flora and fauna. Lesbos is famous for its excellent bird-watching, at Kelloni Nature Reserve you can spot over two hundred and fifty species. Take a tour of over two hundred caves scattered across the island, believed to be originally neolithic places of worship. Discover an aquatic world snorkelling and scuba diving. Lose yourself in the unique and natural phenomenon that is the Petrified Forest, created from intense volcanic activity. Then visit the nearby museum at Sigri, which is dedicated to researching, promoting, displaying, and preserving it. Go on a wine tour and sample the fruits of the harvest, and most of all make sure you don’t miss the World of Ouzo Museum at Isodoros Avvanitis.
At the end of a busy day sightseeing, sit back and watch the stars appear on the big screen as the stars come out to shine at the open-air cinema specially constructed for the summer in the nearby molyvos. For those who want to venture further afield, the port at Mytilini has ferries that can take you to the neighbouring islands of Lindos, Samos, Chios, and beyond.

Discover Lesbos!
The volcanic island of Lesvos (often spelled as Lesbos) offers visitors pretty villages, impressive nature, fascinating geology and gorgeous beaches as well as a fascinating history and rich island culture.
Seasonally, international flights arrive at the island’s airport around 7km south of the island’s capital city, Mytilene, or sail to Lesvos from various Greek ports including Piraeus, Athens.
Fall in love with the island beaches from the long shores of Vatera Beach with watersports, sun loungers and umbrellas to more remote spots accessible only by boat. Keen snorkellers will love the clear waters of Tsonia Beach or you may prefer to sip cocktails overlooking Paralia Tarti’s crystal-clear sea. If you can find the time, soak up the summer ambience of the lively beach at Molyvos with idyllic sunsets over the Aegean.
The island’s nature is inspiring with ample bird-watching opportunities, especially around the salt pans of Kalloni where migratory birds stop en route from Africa to Europe. In the springtime, look out for rare sightings of birds and beautiful wild flowers as you follow a network of hiking trails across the mountains and wild forests. Cycling is another wonderful way to experience the natural beauty and authentic Greek charm of Lesvos.
With archaeological sites and historic castles, there are many sites where you can learn all about the island’s diverse and often turbulent history. Admire the Roman aqueduct in Moria, the Byzantine castle in Molyvos and the impressive fort in in Mytilene. Visitors will also appreciate the island’s hot springs and spas, many which have been used for centuries, and Lesvos’ rich heritage in olive oil and ouzo production – a visit to The World of Ouzo Museum and distillery is an interesting detour.
Another great highlight of the island is The Petrified Forest, dating back 20 million years -the fossilised tree stumps underwent the process of petrification during the active volcanic period. Learn more about this unique natural site, at the forest’s Natural History museum around 11km from the remote fishing harbour of Sigri.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesChildren can have so much fun when you stay at Villa Avlaki, starting with the shared swimming pool, where they can swim and splash all day. The nearest beach is within walking distance, where there is easy entry into the shallow calm waters of the Aegean Sea. The coastline is populated with family-friendly beaches, many with organised sun loungers, parasols, water sports, facilities, and restaurants and bars. We especially recommend the blue flag beach of Petra for its quiet picturesque setting, the resort of Molyvos with its sandy beach and harbour, and the quiet setting of Eftalou.
All aboard the Toy Train that will take you to Molyvos, travel along the coastline to enjoy a family day out at the local town and beach. Take the boat across the water to visit Rabbit Island, once again populated with hundreds of fluffy bunnies. No trip to Lesbos is complete without a family day at sea, and there are lots of options. All aboard for an entry-level glass-bottomed boat tour, where they can spot the sea life through the glass. Go on a shared boat trip out to sea, and if you are really lucky, they might get to see a dolphin or seal playing in the water. Push the boat out and charter your own yacht for a lazy day at sea, swimming and snorkelling, discovering hidden bays and secret coves, dine aboard, and then sail back to the harbour as the sun sets.
Your kids will love a visit to the UNESCO Geopark Petrified Forest and Museum at Sigri. This incredible lunar landscape of trees turned into stone by intense volcanic activity is fabulously fascinating. If you are lucky enough to be on holiday in June, there is the Lesbos Food Festival, which has special cookery lessons for kids, teaching them how to make traditional Greek dishes. They can learn the importance of bees and beekeeping at the Museum Honey Farm in Skalochori, and get to taste it too. The Olive Oil Museum at Plomari has an original press, and an exhibition of the history of olive oil production on the island, sample some and take a bottle home with you.
Enjoy a family day out in Mytilini, children especially love a visit to the ancient fortifications and medieval castle with magnificent views from the top. There are museums to spark their interest in history, beaches to build sand castles, parks and children’s playgrounds, and a harbour to take boat trips from, as well as lots of family-friendly traditional tavernas where you can all enjoy homemade Greek dishes. In the centre of the island, there is the Kelloni Nature Reserve, where they can spot up to two hundred and fifty species of birds, fabulous if you’ve got a twitcher in the family. A visit to local villages, through the natural flora and fauna of the Lesbos countryside, is a great way to learn about the culture of the country. End your day out in the nearby village of Molyvos, where in the summer months, the open-air cinema show children’s film alfresco.
