The sophisticated luxury of Villa Mitos sprawls above the beautiful bay of Chania in Crete. From here you can watch the intoxicating sight of a morning sunrise or evening sunset, an unbeatable part of island life. Villa Mitos is designed with elegance and luxury in mind, but it’s still very much a home. Stunning in its simplicity, you’ll be ready to relax and recharge as soon as you close the door behind you.

You’re situated 800 meters from the spellbinding Cretan coast with its fluffy golden beaches and agate seas. Comfort and bliss are words synonymous with the area which is home to a number of traditional Greek villages with their relaxed and indulgent pace of living. You’ll find that the energy is infectious and in next to no time you’ll be prepared to drop down a gear and embrace this eternally inspiring island. Alongside diving into sleepy village life, you can explore a vast array of hidden coves and sandy beaches.

A suitable home for eight, the property contains three double bedrooms, a large cinema room with a sleeper sofa suitable for sleeping two, a sweeping outdoor dining and BBQ area and a wonderful heated infinity pool where you’ll undoubtedly spend much of your time. Another enchanting facet of the property is its numerous balconies and terraces which serve to showcase the best of Crete. Airy and spacious inside, the open-plan kitchen, dining and lounge area give a sense of communal space ideal for quality family time. They say the devil is in the details and set across two floors, the layout, design and furnishings have been thought about conscientiously. The layout of the property guarantees that you’re able to enjoy the natural beauty surrounding you and that whether inside or outside you can make use of the light, airy space suffused with style.

The first master bedroom comes complete with a king-sized bed, and an en suite shower room and has access to a shared and private balcony which you can access through large sliding terrace windows. The second bedroom also comes complete with a king-size bed, en suite shower and a private balcony. From here, you can follow a staircase which leads to the main living area. On the ground floor, you’ll find the third double bedroom which has quick access to the private pool. Inside you can enjoy the open-plan living space perfect for rustling up meals, kicking back and watching the television and cosying up on any of the many seating areas. With fine views of the pool and bay, this is a truly tranquil space.

Outdoor living rules in Crete. Spend time in the great outdoors relaxing by the pool, reading on the terrace or firing up the BBQ for an al fresco meal which languishes into the night. If you’re aiming for lunch instead, you can use the covered pergola for shade and shelter. The neutral colours and sublime décor allow the natural colours of Crete to pop. Enjoy your stay in sublime luxury at Villa Mitos.

What you should know…

  •  We found ‘cash is king’, in some of the more remote areas of the island including towns and villages, so best to always keep some cash on you.
  • Crete is a large island and is best explored by car, glad we booked in advance as we heard rentals can easily get booked out during the more popular months.
  •  The pace of life here is slow and easy, but we did get into the local habit of sitting and sipping an iced frappe at the local coffee shop every morning.

Crete is a fantastic travel destination. The largest of the Greek islands, Crete is full of warmth, history, culture, irresistible food, great beauty and an enviable pace of life. Close to your villa, you’ll find a shop, coffee shop, bar and two restaurants in the Kokkino Chorio village, a beautifully quiet destination where you can sink into a slower way of life.

A five-minute drive away is Plaka village – here you’ll find all the shops, supermarkets, restaurants and bars you desire. Plaka is a great stop if you want to try international fare as well as traditional local dishes. As you might expect when living on an island, a huge selling point is the endless array of beaches. Spend a day swimming, sunbathing sensibly, diving, snorkelling, reading and relaxing amongst Cretan beauty. Close by you’ll find the mysteriously named ‘Secret Beach’ which is small but perfectly secluded and may feel like a rare find for your party. There are also shops, seafront restaurants and watersports to partake in making this a great destination for a day of both quiet calm and adrenaline-raising adventure. Consider paddle boarding, windsurfing, sailing, jet-skiing or a serene trip out on a pedalo.

Other beaches worth exploring are Agia, Marina, Platanias, Maleme, Falasarna and Kasteli. With a car at your disposal, all of the wonders of the island are before you.
Head to the city of Chania where you can immerse yourself in history and culture. Here you can check out the lighthouse or maritime museum. For younger guests, Chania’s Minoa’s World is well worth a visit – it’s a glorious 9D experience that highlights the history of ancient Greece in a fully immersive way that brings history to life. The large town of Rethymnon is also well worth a visit and offers a flavour of something unique having a history and culture heavily influenced by Venice, Italy.

If you’re looking for captivating landscapes, Balos and Elafonisi are famous around the world for their bountiful beaches and languid lagoons. It’s an hour-and-a-half drive to make it to these beautiful locations and absolutely worth it. If you’re more of a night owl, Crete has the party scene locked down. Chania is certainly the place to be if you want a wild night out. If you’re looking for an island that embodies culture, history, ravishing beauty, mountains, beaches, monuments and magic, look no further than Crete.

How to reach Chania

There are two ways to reach Chania: either by flight or by ferry.

By plane:
Chania Airport (CHQ) is only a 20 minutes ride away from central Chania. During the summer months, frequents overseas and domestic flights are performed. In most of the cases, there are available buses that connect Chania city and most of the villas. You can also hire a car from one of the many rental companies at the airport, or alternatively get a taxi to bring you right to your doorstep.

By ferry:
If you choose to do an island-hopping trip and use the ferry as a method of transportation, then the closest port is in Souda, only 8km from the centre of Chania. Only ferries from Piraeus in Athens or Heraklion in Crete. Heraklion port has a wider choice: you can also take a ferry from other Greek islands like Santorini, Mykonos or Paros, but you will have to take a longer bus ride to reach your villa. You can easily book your ferry tickets using the link below or the booking engine.

Crete is a highly popular tourist destination attracting people of all creeds. It’s especially popular with families and with good reason; it’s safe, secure, and stable and its inhabitants are warm and open-hearted. A truly pretty island, here you can find a way of life that can become truly hypnotic, a lulling sleepy sense that everything is going to be okay. But don’t worry about being bored. Crete is also primed for the adventure seekers amongst you. Owing to the island's popularity with families, you’ll easily make friends and meet dinner companions should you seek it. But if quality family time is what you prefer, you’ll get that in spades too.

The villa is ideally set up for families to enjoy. With a television complete with satellite channels, there’s also a beautiful pool which can be heated at your request. The open-plan space encourages eating, dining and relaxing as a family, but there are also private spaces for when you all need some alone time. The balconies and terraces act as little sips of the sanctuary.

You’re a hop, skip and a jump away from a shop, coffee shop and restaurant and being in between the calmer village of Kokkino Chorio and the larger village of Plaka, you can pick your environment based on your needs. Plaka, for example, has a wider choice of restaurants and bars and oodles of international food.
A huge draw of the island is its beaches. Spend a day diving, swimming, snorkelling or sunbathing. There is a plethora of watersports to indulge in too including paddle boarding and jet-skiing. The serene calm of the island will feel a world away as you take to the water. Enjoy the beauty of ‘Secret Beach’ and head to Balos and Elafonisi for truly spellbinding views. Here you’ll find some of the most gorgeous beaches and lagoons the world has to offer.

For nightlife and optimal busyness, head to Chania which is alive with history and culture. There are plenty of parties to be had here, interesting museums, immersive experiences and quaint lighthouses. Rethymnon is an area tinged with Venetian history and an absolute must-see. An absolute must on the island is a day at a water park. There are many to choose from but we’d suggest Aqua Creta or Watercity Waterpark. However you want to spend your time, boredom isn’t on the menu.
