Overview

Pool Villa/House Ideal for Kids Laptop Friendly Workspace Parking Space

Swathes of summer lavender, trailing roses by white shuttered windows, agapanthuses by the trickling fountain and olive trees standing proudly overlooking the swimming pool. All of this with stunning views of the Luberon hills – this is quintessential Provence!

Maison De L’Artisan is like a step back in time in the most beautiful surroundings. Close to the idyllic village of Ménerbes, made especially famous by Peter Mayle’s ‘A Year in Provence’, this traditional stone mas is the ideal place to unwind and soak up the ambience of this extraordinary region.

The character inside is enchanting with wood-beamed ceilings and cool tiled flooring. The cosy lounge and dining room opens up to the pretty kitchen with its Smeg range and kitchen island, tastefully designed to respect the house’s heritage with stylish contemporary touches. Beneath the sloping ceilings, find four bedrooms and three bathrooms across the ground and first floor including a spacious double with valley views and a delightful en suite with a clawfoot bath.

In an elevated position on a hillside, the vistas from the terraced grounds are wonderful. Dine al-fresco beneath the pergola, gaze at the views from the upper terrace’s stone table and swim in the glorious swimming pool with incredible scenery around you.

Ménerbes is just a 5-minute drive away, one of the Luberon’s iconic perched villages, surrounded by cherry orchards, vineyards and woodland below. One of France’s classified ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, wander around the small village and admire its charming lanes, reserve a table at one of the restaurants with a terrace and pick up local delights at the Thursday morning market. Ménerbes’ 16th century citadel is still highly impressive and there are some fantastic walks in and around the village.

Roussillon, Bonnieux and Gordes all await, as does the handsome town of Apt with its atmospheric Saturday morning market, the largest in the region. Elsewhere, discover the wines of the Luberon, seek out numerous hiking opportunities and cycle across the undulating landscapes with trails for varied abilities.

Beyond the Luberon, you could visit the art galleries of Saint-Rémy, the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Avignon and the antique shops of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue or kayak along the Sorgue River from Fontaine-de-Vaucluse in this beautiful and enchanting part of Provence.

In the Vaucluse department of southern France, Maison De L’Artisan is perched on a hillside with glorious views of the Luberon hills, 3km from the gorgeous village of Ménerbes and 39km from the historic city of Avignon.

Ménerbes is one of the Luberon’s iconic perched villages, set above vineyards, cherry orchards and beautiful scenery of Provence – the vistas from the village are incredible! No wonder the historic village, with its 16th century citadel, has been classified as one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ and is also well known thanks to Peter Mayle’s ‘A Year in Provence’.

As well as a small handful of shops and places to eat in Ménerbes, there is also a charming Thursday morning market. Book ahead if you wish to dine in one of the gorgeous restaurants, especially La Maison de la Truffe et du Vin du Luberon. Wine-lovers note that Domaine de La Citadelle, just outside the village, is within easy reach.

Other stunning hilltop villages across the Luberon include Gordes (10km) and Roussillon (15km), two further ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, as well as nearby Bonnieux and Lacoste. Coustellet (8km), home of the Lavender Museum, is a good place to pick up groceries at the supermarket and also hosts a well-regarded Sunday morning food market. Just under half an hour away, historic Apt (21km) is the place to go for its large Saturday morning market whilst Cavaillon, known for its rich heritage and melons, is only 14km away.

The charm of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (18km) also awaits with its little antique shops, waterwheels and Sunday morning brocante whilst Fontaine-de-Vaucluse (18km) is popular with hikers, outdoor adventurists and canoeing/kayaking enthusiasts. Indeed, there are ample walking and hiking routes, cycling trails, rock-climbing and horse-riding across the breathtaking and varied landscapes of this part of Provence and beyond.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

The Luberon offers a wealth of outdoor adventures for families travelling with children from walking and hiking to horse-riding and rock-climbing.

There are some wonderful cycling trails as well including La Véloroute du Calavon which follows a former railway line between Coustellet and Saint Martin de Castillon. Look out for historic châteaux on your travels as well as fascinating caves hidden amongst the incredible landscapes.

Fontaine-de-Vaucluse is much-loved by keen walkers but is also popular for its setting on the Sorgue River and its canoeing and kayaking opportunities. Close to the village is a tree-top activity centre with trails for a range of ages (usually aged 3+, depending on height).

Avignon is a great day out – youngsters may enjoy a ride on the tourist road train that tours the historic sites whilst families with older children should consider hiring bikes and cycling over to the Rhône’s largest river island, île de la Barthelasse, where you can admire the views of Avignon from the other side of the river.

Find further family attractions between Avignon and Carpentras such as Wave Island waterpark and Parc Spirou Provence theme park. Parc Grimmland to the south is also popular, as is Zoo Barben, just under an hour away near Salon-de-Provence.
