Only a short walk from the vibrant centre of St-Rémy-de-Provence is a real gem of a holiday home, Maison Carnot.

This elegant fully air conditioned 1930’s house has been tenderly and tastefully renovated to ensure that its original beauty and authenticity remain intact Here you will find the decorative ceilings, floor tiles and majestic interior staircase of the original home alongside some lovely complementary fittings and furnishings. The fully equipped kitchen provides an exciting modern contrast, opening out to the light filled conservatory style veranda, where both kitchen-island and dining table overlook the pretty pool and garden. In addition to the spacious downstairs living area with its library and office, there is a separate TV lounge ideal for families with children.

Upstairs are the master en-suite bedroom and two double bedrooms with showers as well as an additional small room for massage or yoga. Meanwhile outside, the charmingly arranged garden offers romantic corners of paradise with its variety of seating areas to choose from. Whether you want sunshine or shade, a glass of wine next to the pool or a read of your book beneath the plane tree, there will be a delightful spot for you.

St-Rémy is often described as the “Jewel of Provence” and a gentle stroll is still the best way to see this lovely town with its car free cobbled streets. As well as owning an abundance of charm, it is large enough to have a variety of shops, galleries, good restaurants and a renowned weekly Wednesday morning market. The artist Vincent Van Gogh painted his famous “Starry Night” here and inspired many local artists who still display and sell their artwork each summer Sunday on the lively Route des Artistes.

The glorious Alpilles Natural Park offers many opportunities for outdoor family activities as well as the pleasure of visiting several exquisite hillside villages such as Les Baux-de-Provence and Eygalières, both officially classified as Plus Beaux Villages.

It is an easy day trip to the historic cities of Avignon and Nîmes or simply head southwards towards Arles, the gateway to the wonderful Camargue with its iconic wild white horses, black bulls and pink flamingos. If you are yearning for a glimpse of the sea, the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean are just over an hour’s drive away.

Maison Carnot has a great location in a residential area of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in the Bouches-du-Rhone department of southern France, within walking distance of the pedestrianised town centre.

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence has plenty of shops, galleries, high-end restaurants and a renowned Wednesday morning market - it’s so pleasant to stroll around the pretty cobbled lanes of the car free town centre. Vincent Van Gogh loved it here and many local artists still display and sell their artwork each summer Sunday on the lively Route des Artistes.

The town lies on the northern edge of Les Alpilles Natural Park so start by driving the short distance southwards into this amazing area, the home of small scrub covered mountains, olive groves and forests, a great place for family activities such as rock climbing, horse riding, hiking and mountain biking. In this wonderful spot in Provence discover picture-perfect hilltop villages with plane tree shaded squares.

Just 11km southwards is Les Baux-de-Provence, one of France’s several plus beaux villages in this locality. Beautifully perched on the hilltop, it has fantastic views towards Arles, the Camargue and the mountain range of Les Alpilles. A few kilometres further south is Maussane-les-Alpilles, an agreeable village surrounded by vast olive plantations and famous for its production of olive oil. The nearby delightful village of Paradou lies at the foot of the mountains, representing Provence in miniature.

For a taste of city life, Avignon, with its UNESCO World Heritage sites, is a 27km drive northwards whilst it is a similar distance southwards to the historic city of Arles, which was another source of inspiration to Van Gogh and has the remains of a famous Roman amphitheatre. It’s so atmospheric to enjoy dinner at a restaurant terrace beneath the plane trees in Arles’ Place du Forum, where Van Gogh once painted “Café Terrace at Night”.

Arles is the gateway to the splendid Camargue Regional Park, renowned for its wild white horses, marshes, black bulls and pink flamingos. There are opportunities here for horse riding, quad biking, hiking and bird watching or treat yourselves to an adventurous safari jeep tour from Arles. The capital of the region, Sainte-Maries-de-la-Mer, is only 67 km away from Maison Carnot and has some fine sandy beaches.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

This area of Provence is a great destination for children and one of the most welcoming. They are sure to enjoy browsing and trying out their French in the local market or stopping for an ice cream at a pretty café in one of the idyllic villages.

The Van Gogh trail in St-Rémy-de-Provence has signposts showing the paintings the artist created in the village, ending at the Monastery Saint-Paul de Mausole, where he resided. The archaeological site of Glanum, just outside the town, has Roman and Greek the remains as well as a café and gift shop.

Maussane-les-Alpilles regularly hosts traditional festivals, pétanque matches, local fairs and shows. In Agora Park there is a giant map of France and a snakes and ladders board.

For adventurous children there is horse riding available in St-Rémy-de-Provence, Les Alpilles and the Carmargue as well as mountain biking and rock climbing in Les Alpilles.
Take a boat trip on the Rhône in Avignon and admire the famous medieval nursery rhyme bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Smaller children can take a tour of the city on the little road train.

Train enthusiasts will love the model railway south of Carpentras. There are kayaks and canoes for hire on the river Sorgue in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse or try out the tree-top activity centre there.
