Le Puits aux Souhaits has been wonderfully renovated to create a stylish holiday home with plenty of Provençal character, set in a verdant garden with a private swimming pool and only 2.5km from the historic heart of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

Appreciate the warmth of the interiors as you lounge back by the fireplace and TV, cook delicious feasts in the beautiful contemporary kitchen and dine together on the large dining table with doors opening out to the terrace. There are five good-sized bedrooms, each with king or queen-size double beds, one on the ground floor, and they all have their own private shower room.

Enjoy breakfast out on the garden terrace or leisurely long lunches beneath the shade by the barbecue, always soaking up the sights and sounds of Provence as you look out towards the flowers, olive trees and plants. There’s an air of authenticity here – listen out for the gentle sound of crickets as you cool off in the 12m long swimming pool, then play a game of pétanque on the court.

Off a country road leading to Saint-Rémy, this feels like a rural setting close to occasional houses, farmland and vines yet only 2.5km from the bustling town centre. Experience the large Provençal market on a Wednesday morning, look out for weekly artisan markets on summer evenings and embrace the charming ambience of its shops, art galleries and bistros of this town where Van Gogh lived towards the end of his life.

Explore the glorious landscapes of Les Alpilles by discovering long walks, hiking routes and horse-riding or hire bikes to ride past olive groves, woodland, poppy fields and vineyards. Come across picture-perfect villages such as hilltop Eygalières, laid-back Maussane-les-Alpilles and the perched village of Les Baux-de-Provence with its famous château.

Spend time visiting the small historic city of Avignon, learn all about the history of Tarascon and Beaucaire, then admire the preserved Roman ruins of Nimes. To the south is Van Gogh’s beloved Arles, another fine day out and the gateway to the captivating landscapes of the Camargue in this beguiling part of southern France.

Le Puits aux Souhaits is located off a country road just 2.5km from the historic heart of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. You can fly into one of the airports near Nîmes or Marseille or arrive by train into Avignon TGV with regular fast departures from Paris Gare de Lyon taking 2 hours 40 minutes.

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is an artistic town with a charming old quarter of narrow lanes, inviting bistros, atmospheric bars and art galleries. Follow the Van Gogh art trail around the town ending the Saint-Paul de Mausole monastery where the Dutch painter spent the final days of his life. Head out early on a Wednesday morning to experience Saint-Rémy’s bustling market which showcases some of the wonderful fresh produce from this region and beyond. In the height of the summer look out for the Creators Market where local artists and creators sell their handcrafted goods on a Tuesday evening.

Across Les Alpilles Regional Natural Park, visit picture-perfect villages such as Maussane-les-Alpilles (12km), a great spot for lunch perhaps after the Thursday morning market, and tiny Paradou (14km), home to the renowned Le Bistrot du Paradou. The hilltop village of Les Baux-de-Provence (10km), classified as one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, is also within easy reach – visit early morning or in the evening to avoid the tourist day-trippers. There are some glorious walks through the landscapes around Les Baux-de-Provence passing endless olive groves and look out for farms where you can sample delicious cheeses, honey and olive oil.

Further afield, spend the day in the small historic city of Avignon (21km) and visit its two UNESCO World Heritage sites, Le Pont d'Avignon and the Palais des Papes. Admire the wonderfully preserved Roman ruins of Nîmes (44km), canoe or simply enjoy a picnic by the incredible Pont du Gard (38km) and spend time following more of Van Gogh’s footsteps in Arles (25km), the gateway to the Camargue.
