Ideal for Kids Walk to Beach Walk to Village Romantic

Stay on an enchanting island just off the French Riviera coast, surrounded by fruit orchards and countryside yet just a short stroll or bike ride from atmospheric restaurants and cafes in the nearby port. Villa Pelous offers wonderful accommodation for up to ten guests on the beautiful Île de Porquerolles.

It’s a true privilege to be able to stay on this much-loved isle, after all most visitors leave this magical island as the last day-trippers depart back to the mainland. It’s also hard to believe you are just a five-minute walk from the island’s only town when you have such calming countryside around you at Villa Pelous, set in one hectare of gorgeous grounds with so many fruit trees.

This Provençal farmhouse offers style as well as authentic character, sleeping 10 guests across its five double bedrooms, one being a master double with its own en suite bathroom and glimpses of the island’s windmill from its window. The living room is warm and welcoming whilst the kitchen is perfectly equipped for preparing joyful feasts to be devoured on the covered al-fresco terrace or by the barbecue. Follow with a relaxed game of Pétanque and perhaps a glass of Porquerolles’ finest Côtes de Provence Rosé from the island’s highly regarded vineyards.

There are virtually no vehicles on the island so you can walk, hike and bike to your heart’s content. As you come across glorious swimming spots close by you will soon discover why so many visitors compare Porquerolles’ beaches to those in the Caribbean. A range of watersports also await whilst it’s a paradise for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts.

Hire bikes and explore the isle, passing olive groves, yet more orchards as well as shady trails through endless pines and eucalyptus trees, sensing the summer aromas of the wild herbs across this natural island which is protected as a national park. Arrange boat hire for the day, the perfect way to admire the south of the island with its rugged coastline, calanques and hard to reach coves.

As the summer crowds depart at the end of the day, watch locals play boules in Port De Porquerolles’ main square or perhaps enjoy an evening picnic on a tranquil beach as you soak up the natural beauty of this remarkable French island.

A privileged setting, Villa Pelous is beautifully positioned on the island of Porquerolles, one of the Îles d'Hyères off the French Riviera coast. The island is around 12km² and boasts 30km of coastline from long idyllic beaches to rugged cliffs and calanques.

The villa is in a countryside setting yet Port De Porquerolles is only 1km away. Guests arrive via the 15-minute ferry shuttle or private taxi boat from La Tour Fondue at the end of the Giens peninsula (around 8.5km from Toulon Hyères Airport). There are also seasonal boat departures from Toulon, taking just over an hour.

Cars are not permitted on the island, so visitors explore the island on foot, by cycling or even hiring a boat and skipper. Bikes can be hired near the port or arranged in advance and delivered to the villa. Private boat transfers from the mainland (and help with luggage on arrival) can also be organised, as can boat hire, all with advanced notice.

There is a small supermarket at Port De Porquerolles as well as a handful of charming cafes and restaurants. Sit down with a coffee at the main square, Place d’Armes, and watch locals play boules in this atmospheric spot. Enjoy brilliant views towards Hyères from Fort Sainte-Agathe and admire the artwork at the highly regarded Fondation Carmignac, just outside the port.

Plage de la Courtade is the nearest beach, around 1.5km away or a short stroll from the port, where you can relax on the shores or swim in the crystal-clear sea – there’s a diving centre here and a place to hire paddle boats, sea-kayaks, sailing boats etc. Heading further towards the north-east of the island, Plage Notre Dame is another picture-perfect spot for a picnic and swim in such peaceful surroundings, backed by towering pine forests. Many visitors compare the beaches on Île de Porquerolles to those in the Caribbean – the island is especially idyllic in the spring, early summer and autumn away from the July and August crowds.

The natural beauty of Porquerolles has been preserved as it’s part of a protected national park and all buildings must blend in with their environment – this is why there’s such an authentic ambience throughout the island. Make sure you sample some of the highly regarded wine from Porquerolles’ vineyards and take long walks through the island’s interiors with shady paths through the pines and eucalyptus trees as well as trails passing olive groves and fruit orchards.

To the south of the island is the rugged coastline and hard to reach coves, a paradise for hikers or hire a boat to explore from the water. The lighthouse is a fantastic spot for admiring sensational views.

Reached via private boat taxi, Île du Levant is another one of the enchanting Îles d'Hyères, a wonderful place for walking amongst the maquis with such stunning scenery whilst Île de Port Cros, the smallest and wildest of the three islands, has kilometres of marked nature trails and superb snorkelling opportunities.

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Île de Porquerolles is such a beautiful place for a relaxed family holiday.

With virtually no vehicles allowed on the island, hire bikes (with options for a variety of ages) to get out and about exploring this idyllic island or simply potter around by walking to the local restaurants at Port De Porquerolles, only 1km away, and the beaches along the northern part of the coast near the port. Boat hire can be arranged too, as can boat trips with a skipper, a fantastic way to explore the rugged coastline to the south.

Plage de la Courtade, the closest beach to the port, has a diving centre as well as summer water-based activities such as sea-kayaking, paddle boats and sailing whilst Plage d'Argent, just over a 20-minute walk away, has sandy shores, crystal-clear sea and shallow water for youngsters. Slightly further afield and reached by bike, Plage Notre Dame is often compared to a Caribbean beach.

Be enchanted by the Moulin du Bonheur, not far from the villa – a windmill that has recently been restored to its former glory. There are further amazing views from the island’s lighthouse to the south or head to Fort Sainte-Agathe for yet more superb panoramas from the very top.

Finally, as the day-trippers leave the island, head down to Place d’Armes and watch locals play boules as youngsters enjoy the little playground in this relaxed and authentic setting.
