In an elevated, south-facing position with idyllic views of the Massif des Maures, Bastide du Figuier enjoys a privileged location just 4km from the typical Provençal town of Draguignan in the Var department of southern France, only half an hour from the glistening Côte d’Azur.
This is an area filled with perched medieval villages, outstanding natural beauty, rolling hills of olive groves, renowned vineyards and wine châteaux (Domaines Ott and Château de Berne amongst many others) as well as historic sites (Abbaye du Thoronet is just 22km away). The diversity of the landscapes means there’s a wealth of outdoor activities available including horse-riding, hiking, cycling, rock-climbing, golf and watersports both on the French Riviera and Verdon Gorge.
The nearby town of Draguignan (4km) is a great place to start your discovery of this authentic region. Visit on a Wednesday or Saturday morning when Place du Marché comes alive with many stalls selling all sorts of fresh produce and local delights such as olive oil and honey as well as seasonal fruit, vegetables, meat and cheeses. The town also has interesting art galleries and museums to visit as well as a great variety of shops and restaurants.
There are two especially picturesque medieval villages to explore nearby; Flayosc (7km) and Lorgues (10km), both surrounded by beautiful landscapes so typical of Provence and feature charming restaurants and good bars. Flayosc still has a couple of mills producing excellent olive oil as well as being known for its honey whilst Lorgues hosts one of the largest markets in the region every Tuesday morning. Both villages are delightful places to sit back in an atmospheric café with a coffee or glass of local wine, soaking up the Provençal ambience around you.
Other worthy villages to explore include Seillans (33km) and Bargème (45km), both classified as two of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, historic Entrecasteaux (24km) with its 16th century château and La Garde-Freinet (32km) in the heart of the Massif des Maures.
The pretty village of Aups (28km) is one of the gateways to the incredible Parc Naturel Régional du Verdon, a region known for its world-famous Verdon Gorges, parts of which can be reached in under an hour. Admire its awe-inspiring beauty and take part in a wealth of outdoor activities from white-water rafting and paragliding to horse-riding and canoeing.
The beaches of the French Riviera and bay of Saint-Tropez can be reached in just half an hour with Sainte-Maxime only 35km away with its family-friendly sandy beaches and relaxed vibe. South of the bay, Saint-Tropez (50km) is also a wonderful day out whether experiencing the glamour and charm of the former fishing village or spending time on the renowned Pampelonne beach with its glitzy beach clubs and magnificent watersports.
Nice Airport is just under an hour away or if arriving by train, a TGV service from Paris arrives at Gare Des Arcs just 11km away.

How long have you owned the property?
1 year and 5 months
What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
The stunning view, the traditional architecture of the stone bastide, the layout,
the terracing and garden, the proximity to the sea, the tranquility, the many cultural medieval villages nearby, and the fact that it is easy to get to Nice Airport.
Are there any interesting stories in its history?
It was the principal Bastide in Les Selves for a wealthy landowner dating back to
18th century. It has been thoughtfully modernised over the years retaining
its original and traditional character.
Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
Susan Horsfield, Artist.
For anyone coming to stay, is there anything you suggest that they really…
- Must do?
They must visit Saint Tropez, Ramatuelle (busy in high season)
Gorge du Verdon, Lorgues, Flayosc, Les Arcs-sur-Argens, Entrecasteaux,
Aups, Tourtour, Villecroze, Fayence. Sillans la Cascade, Seillans,
Roquebrune-sur-Argens, Salernes, Bagnols-en-Foret, Tourrettes, Bargeme
and Garde de Freinet.
- Must eat?
There is an extensive Michelin guide for this area for some very
great restaurants. Also, this answer would depend on prices people are
willing to pay. So, for instance, 15 - 30 euros per head, Chez Ludo in
Lorgues, La Table, Lorgues. Le Nid, Flayosc 18-50 euros. Bruno 78-150
euros per head. L’estallan, Lorgues - 30-74 euros per head.
- Must see?
Mosaic by Chagall at Chapelle Sainte Roseline, The Abbey du
Thoronet 12th Century (a listed national monument in france). Tourtour is
notable as it is a listed ‘beautiful village of France.’ Visit the Gorges du
Verdon. Visit the extensive famous vineyards ie. Domaine Ott, Whispering Angel, Chateau Saint Pierre, Chateau l’esprit, Chateau
de Berne (there are so many from this house within 15 mins - half an hours
drive).
What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area? I
would keep a list of all the wine domaines/Chateaux near this property that
sell famous wines and every evening at 6pm go and visit them to
experience their free wine tasting and beautiful locations! I suggest visiting
as many of the medieval villages as possible and their markets (google
market days in these areas). If you want a day or two on the beach then
take the country roads from the house via Garde de Freinet during high
seasons...no traffic and beautiful scenery. Buy local produce in season from
the local markets.
Beautiful house, pool and garden and fabulous panoramic views. Wonderful warm and friendly welcome.
Just amazing. The house and decor are beautiful with splendid views over to the mountains.
Nous n'avions pas passé de vacances en famille depuis des années...il n'y a pas de meilleur choix que celui de votre maison pour ces retrouvailles ! Merci d'avoir rendu les choses aussi agréables. A très bientôt nous l’espérons !
Thank you very much for a truly lovely week in this beautiful house. We loved it!
First, few words for our host - She gave us the most warming welcome, she is very caring and makes you feel like home right from the start. Her superb bastide is a little piece of heaven, fully equipped. It is decorated with great taste and all rooms are equally spacious and charming. The outside is where it’s getting crazier, the giant pool, the loggia and this amazing view. It felt out of time. We had such an amazing week in this beautiful house and all hope that we can come back someday.
If you want to live like God in France, this is the place to be. A beautifully renovated authentic bastide in the countryside of the Provence. Every detail is perfect. The pictures on the site are not even giving you the total atmosphere. The owner is a perfect host; it is obvious she loves to share this place and her experiences in the area. We can totally recommend this place.
We had a wonderful stay in this beautiful home, absolutely loved the setting, garden, outdoor spaces and, of course, the wonderfully restored house. Thank you to the owner for all the recommendations and tips, we need to come back again to cross everything off the list!
Amazing house. Beautiful setting with a great view. Sheltered from everything and very quiet. A place that allows you to disconnect.
What a wonderful property, with delightful hosts and wonderful location!! We had the luxury of spending 4 weeks in Sally’s home, part working remotely, part holiday. We were 6 adults and 4 children, and I came back ranking this holiday in our top 5 ever! Sally was a very caring and responsive host even before we arrived, answering our every question, making suggestions on what to visit and being super flexible with our requests. When we arrived, she had prepared a number of welcome details that made us feel right at home, like some local delicacies, including a chilled bottle of rosé that just hit the spot after a long journey. During our stay, she was always available for any question either on the house or on activities to do in the area. The house is absolutely charming, with a well put together mix of traditional Provence style and modern amenities, where you can clearly see the outcome of thoughtful and thorough renovation, with continuous upkeep. It offers stunning views over massif des Maures, and is high enough that nights cool down to a comfortable 20-22 degrees C, accompanied more often than not by a light breeze. You do, however, need to consider that this is a big, older house that has been renovated, so there are likely to be some small quirks here and there that can be easily sorted. As far as location, we were originally looking for something right next to the beach, but ended up choosing a better home farther away from the beach. This ended up being such a great choice!! You are 40-75 minutes away from a plethora of beaches - the drives are always interesting so we weren’t deterred at all from going. But beyond that, there is so much more to explore in the area: - Ste Croix lake & surrounding villages (like Moustiers Ste Marie, a no miss!) - lavender fields of Valensole - wonderful markets - wine chateaux, favorites were Chateau de Berne (do have dinner there) and Chateau d’Esclans - and so much more - Sally has curated and published a comprehensive list of places to visit and things to do in the area. Suggest you look it up and plan in advance as there will be more things to do than you have days in your trip! Bottom line: We do hope to return in future occasions!
This is a very special place in the heart of Provence. Sally is a wonderful host who makes you feel at home the moment you make the booking. Every detail is thought about. The house has a stylish yet typical Provençal feel with modern amenities. You do need a car to get around. Our families loved their time here and we wouldn’t hesitate to book again. Thank you Sally.
We spent a stay with our children during the first half of August. La Bastide is very beautiful, faithful to the photos published on the site. It is ideal for those who want to mix peace and nature, as well as sea and private beaches of the French Riviera. It is located less than 1 hour from the Verdon gorges and less than 1 hour from Saint Tropez and Sainte Maxime. Sally, the owner, was very available and ensured that our stay was as comfortable as possible.
Don't miss out! Reserve now and get a full refund if you change your mind within 48hrs.
