Book Now & Grow Green: 3 Trees Planted with Every Booking!

This Earth Day, join our mission to plant 3 trees for every booking made between April 22nd - 28th, 2024. Let's make a sustainable impact together! Learn more about our journey here >>

The valley views are glorious from this charming 4-bedroom Dordogne home set just a short drive from the market town of Montignac-Lascaux and close to the banks of the Vézère.

With its swimming pool, covered terrace and vast open grounds, it’s a joy to spend time at Villa Croche with its far-reaching vistas thanks to its hilltop position on the edge of a tiny rural village. Imagine sun-bathing in the morning then cooling off in the 9m long swimming pool before feasting al-fresco by the barbecue and opening up a bottle of wine as the stars fill the clear night sky. All the time whilst younger guests make the most of the large garden with ample space to play.

Villa Croche is just as lovely inside, the perfect blend of old and new with its exposed wood beams and grand fireplace alongside attractive furnishings and modern comforts. Over two floors, the bedrooms (three doubles and a twin) are simple yet pretty and you can make the most of the wonderful views as you peep through the little windows.

It’s just a short drive down to Montignac by the banks of the Vézère River, a small charming town with historic houses, inviting shops and an atmospheric market. In the summer, look out for canoeing and kayaking opportunities along the Vézère or venture further south towards the banks of the Dordogne near picture-perfect spots such as Limeuil and Trémolat.

Other idyllic places to visit include Saint-Amand-de-Coly and Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère, both classified as two of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ whilst the famous Lascaux-International Centre for Cave Art is also not to be missed.

A little further afield, spend the day exploring the bustling markets of Périgueux, the historic capital of the Dordogne and easily reached by train, or head south to Sarlat-la-Canéda, one of the country’s most exquisite towns with a great reputation for its beautiful architecture and fine Périgord cuisine.

Only 7km from Montignac-Lascaux, Villa Croche is located in beautiful open grounds on the edge of a tiny village in the Dordogne countryside. With its hilltop setting, it enjoys the most wonderful rural views.

The nearest amenities can be found in a small local town 5km away, also by the Vézère River, and a train station with departures to Périgueux (30 minutes by train) and Brive-la-Gaillarde (20 minutes). This part of the Dordogne is popular for walking, horse-riding, fishing and visiting pre-historic caves and sites, not to mention summer canoeing and kayaking along the Vézère River.

Visit the pretty market town of Montignac-Lascaux (7km) to admire the old houses overlooking the river, soak up the ambience of its picturesque market and visit the famous Lascaux-International Centre for Cave Art just outside the town. Saint-Amand-de-Coly (13km) is also a gorgeous spot to discover, officially classified as one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ with its abbey ruins, historic church, former bread oven and little tea shop. Furthermore, look out for the evening market that usually takes place on Tuesday evenings in July and August.

Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère (17km) is yet another one of Dordogne’s most beautiful villages, perhaps also stopping off at Château Losse and its magnificent gardens. Heading further south, the Vézère converges with the Dordogne in Limeuil (45km), a lovely place for a riverside picnic or summer paddle from its beach. Gastronomes may wish to consider booking a table at the Michelin starred restaurant in Trémolat, Le Vieux Logis, as featured in Rick Stein’s ‘Secret France.’

Sarlat-la-Canéda (32km) is yet another highlight of the Dordogne region with its rich history, atmospheric markets and inviting shops and restaurants showcasing the best Périgord cuisine, especially truffles and foie gras. Food-lovers will also adore the markets of Périgueux (44km), the historic capital of this region and yet another fine day out from your holiday home.

Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

Montignac-Lascaux, a short drive away, is home to a Parc de Loisirs, usually open in the height of the summer, with a mini golf course, mini-bowling and an inflatable water course (check opening dates/times in advance).

There are canoeing and kayaking opportunities along the Vézère River near Montignac and further south along the Dordogne, of course. This region is also known for its long walks, horse-riding and pre-historic sites/caves including the famous Lascaux-International Centre for Cave Art just outside Montignac.

Around a 40-minute drive away, Le Bugue, also by the banks of the Vézère, features canoeing/kayaking as well as other family attractions including the Aquarium Périgord Nord and the old-fashioned theme park Parc Le Bournat. Slightly closer to home, dinosaur lovers may enjoy a visit to the Parc aux Dinosaures near Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère and there is a tree-top adventure centre close to Sarlat-la-Canéda.

It has been four years since we stayed at this villa and we are delighted to say it was even better than we remembered. We cannot wait to go back again.
