A gorgeous holiday home which exudes French character alongside contemporary flair, Villa Bémol enjoys a picturesque setting within 7km of the heart of Rocamadour, one of France’s most significant tourist destinations and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

There’s a sense of calm as you gaze out to the rural views from your walled garden and heated swimming pool. The covered terrace is a pretty spot for reading or socialising in the shade whilst there is ample room for al-fresco dining, making the most of the barbecue.

The interiors are welcoming with an open-plan lounge and kitchen-diner, perfectly equipped with everything you may need. An en suite ground floor bedroom awaits whilst upstairs you will find three further doubles with queen-size beds and air-conditioning, as well as an impressive shower room. Throughout the cosy villa, admire charming features such as exposed stone walls and wood beams alongside modern style and comfort.

Set just off a country road in a tiny village, it’s amazing to be just a 10-minute drive to the famous small town of Rocamadour, built into the cliff edge in the vast Causses du Quercy Regional Natural Park. A historic pilgrimage site, explore its narrow lanes and climb the many steps, including the iconic grand escalier, as you admire the town’s arched gates, religious buildings and stunning château. Enjoy meals out in one of the town’s restaurants, many with terraces with incredible valley views.

Other highlights of the area include the amazing caves and underground river at Gouffre de Padirac, the swinging monkeys of La Forêt des Singes and the fantastic animal park near Gramat, an attractive local town with a vibrant twice-weekly market. Water lovers can drive to the Dordogne River for summer canoeing and kayaking only half-an-hour away, or venture further south towards the artistic village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie by the banks of the Lot River.

You are also perfectly placed for visiting some of the picture-perfect villages and grand châteaux of the Dordogne including Domme, La Roque-Gageac and Château de Beynac all within an hour, not forgetting the beautiful town of Sarlat-la-Canéda known for its exquisite architecture and fine Périgord cuisine.

Villa Bémol is under 7km from Rocamadour, France’s most important pilgrimage site and a UNESCO World Heritage site, located in the Lot department of southern France.

Just off a country road in a little village, it’s around a 10-minute drive up to Rocamadour with its shops, café-bars and restaurants, some with terraces looking out over the valley views. It’s cliffside setting is spectacular, built on three levels with steep lanes and many steps including the famous ‘Great Staircase’ which pilgrims used to climb on their knees. Visit the town’s arched stone gates, religious buildings and imposing castle. There’s no wonder the town is one of France’s most popular tourist destinations.

This part of the Causses du Quercy Regional Natural Park offers a wealth of outdoor adventures across its impressive and varied landscapes. This includes part of the diverted GR65 pilgrimage hiking trail, of course, as well as rock-climbing, horse-riding and water-based adventures further south along the Lot River near the artistic village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie (50km). Slightly closer to home, find canoeing and kayaking along the Dordogne near Saint-Sozy or Floirac, both around half an hour away.

There are numerous caves across the region as well, including the iconic Gouffre de Padirac (23km) where you can tour the caves by boat or on foot, and the limestone caves of Grottes de Lacave near the Dordogne River. Children and adults alike will adore spotting monkeys amongst the trees at La Forêt des Singes, just outside Rocamadour, whilst animal-lovers will also enjoy a trip to Parc Animalier de Gramat around 12km away.

Gramat (10km) itself is an attractive town to visit and hosts a vibrant twice-weekly weekly market at the 19th century Place de la Halle. Meanwhile, other pretty Lot villages to consider include Autoir and Loubressac, both around 25km by car and classified as two of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. In the other direction, the honey-coloured stone houses of historic Gourdon (24km) are a delight to discover.

Crossing over into the Dordogne department, come across gems such as Domme (41km) and La Roque-Gageac (48km), two more of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ with their beautiful position by the Dordogne. Head to the famous castles of Château de Beynac and Château des Milandes, both within an hour, whilst the exquisite town of Sarlat-la-Canéda (48km), known for its stunning architecture and fine gastronomy, is also easily reached.

Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

Of course, one of the major attractions of this area is Rocamadour, just a short drive from your holiday home. After climbing plenty of steps, younger guests may enjoy a tour of the town on the tourist road train that usually runs early/mid-April to late-September.

Just on the edge of Rocamadour, visit the Rocher des Aigles for falconry displays, owls, parrots and more as well as La Forêt des Singes, home to over one hundred monkeys in a vast forest. Around a 15-minute drive away, just south the attractive town of Gramat, a large animal park awaits in a beautiful and wild setting.

The famous Gouffre de Padirac (23km) is another must-visit where you can explore historic caves by foot or boat, whilst the caves at Grottes de Lacave are also fascinating, close to the Dordogne River.

Find summer canoeing and kayaking along the Dordogne in places such as Saint-Sozy or Floirac or venture slightly further west towards Domme for a boat-ride along one of France’s most famous rivers.

Reviews

  • Highly Recommended House

    on 12/09/2023

We had a great time in the house. Everything was done. The area is beautiful and there is plenty to see. And of course the swimming pool provides cooling. The family was very helpful and took time to explain. The house was delivered very clean. So all in all perfect. We informed the family that a larger coffee maker would be nicer if there is a group of 8 people (note from Francevilla: we will ask the owners to purchase this). This is absolutely not a criticism.

Tip: perhaps you can mention that you can see many stars in the evening when the weather is clear and that Couzou is “a village étoilé”. We also went to Saint-Cirque Lapodie, Sarlat and Les Gouffres de Padirac.

If anyone ever wants to rent a house in France, we will definitely recommend you.
