Visit some of the Dordogne and Lot’s most picturesque market towns when staying at this characterful cottage just 3km from a beautiful bastide town.

In a rural setting, set along a small country road surrounded by farmland and rows of summer sunflowers, this delightful holiday home offers plenty of charm. Pretty windows, a log-burning fire and a handsome range cooker are just some of the traditional features in the inviting living and dining room whilst four pretty bedrooms allow plenty of space for a family or group of friends, including two especially characterful rooms upstairs with impressive wood beams so typical of this region.

The thoughtful owners have created a comfortable place for all ages, especially for young children with toys, books, DVDs and even bed guards, a baby monitor and steriliser. All generations will love the cosy and welcoming ambience of this home, whether spending evenings inside watching the Smart TV or sitting out on the tranquil terrace.

Outside you can also unwind in the hammocks with a glass of Côtes de Bergerac wine or soak up the sun on the patio as children play in the enclosed gardens, surrounded by fields. The heated swimming pool, which features a safety gate, is superb for lazy summer afternoons, perhaps after a morning out exploring. Dining al-fresco is another delight, serving a feast with delicious produce from a variety of excellent local Farmers markets.

You may prefer to head to a local restaurant to sample some of the regional cuisine – the nearest historic town is just 3km away with its picturesque square and 14th-century market hall or two of France’s 'Plus Beaux Villages', Monflanquin and Monpazier, can be easily reached in under twenty minutes by car.

Spend time visiting grand châteaux, hiring canoes along the Dordogne or Lot rivers and walking or cycling through the gorgeous Dropt valley. Bergerac and its vineyards are just half an hour away whilst the famous riverside villages of Domme and Roque-Gageac can be reached in an hour. Wine-lovers can also head to Saint-Émilion or Bordeaux for the day visiting some of France’s most well-known vineyards.

In the Lot countryside, yet so close to the Dordogne border, this really is a fantastic location for exploring many wonderful parts of southern France.

Only half an hour from the historic town of Bergerac, this charming house can be found in the Lot-et-Garonne department, just minutes from the border with Dordogne, close to some of southern France’s most enchanting market towns and beautiful countryside.

Les Petits Champs is surrounded by typical farmland of this area – go on walks through the fields, passing a nearby reservoir and rows of summer sunflowers or watch tractors at work during planting and harvest time in this rural and picturesque setting.

The house sits on a small country road that leads to the local bastide town, 3km away, where you will find your nearest restaurants, bars and cafes as well as a couple of supermarkets and other useful shops. The town features some fine medieval architecture including its 14th century market hall, home to an atmospheric Saturday morning market, as well as a variety of half-timbered houses and pretty streets. There’s a lovely ambience across this authentic town, especially on Monday evenings in the height of the summer when a vibrant night market takes place, attracting visitors from across the area.

You are perfectly positioned to visit both the Dordogne region and some of the wonderful places across Lot-et-Garonne. Indeed, two of France’s Plus Beaux Villages are within an easy drive - Monflanquin (16km), one of the country’s most beautifully preserved towns, and Monpazier (17km) with its exquisite historic character and delightful market square. Both towns host traditional markets, an ideal way to soak up the local atmosphere and pick up some amazing regional produce.

Issigeac’s Sunday market, just 14km away, is another fantastic experience, known to be one of the best in the area – take some time to explore this idyllic village with its medieval heritage. Beaumont-du-Périgord (20km) is another splendid bastide town with summer festivities often taking place and Eymet (30km), on the Dropt river, attracts visitors due to its picturesque riverside setting and attractive buildings.

The fine town of Bergerac lies on the Dordogne river, just half an hour away. Spend the day exploring Bergerac’s incredible old town, stopping off in a pretty café or spending time over lunch in one of the many good restaurants. There are some lovely boat trips along the Dordogne – a great way to see the town and surrounding countryside.

Other villages along the Dordogne river are also within easy reach – scenic Trémolat and Limeuil are about 45 minutes away or you can drive to the archetypal riverside villages of Domme, Beynac-et-Cazenac and La Roque-Gageac in about an hour.

Wine enthusiasts will love the Maison de Vins in Bergerac and may also wish to sample some of the sweet wines at the famous Château de Monbazillac, just south of the town. There are of course many vineyards across this region to visit and wine-tastings can easily be arranged. For a spectacular day out, head to the vineyards of Saint-Émilion (86km) or even as far as mighty Bordeaux (150km), reached in a couple of hours by car.

Activities across this area range from glorious walks through the countryside to canoeing along the Dordogne, Lot or Dropt rivers or playing golf in impressive surroundings. Cycling and horse-riding are also great ways to explore nearby landscapes whilst tree-top adventure parks, grand châteaux and pre-historic caves across the region will appeal to all ages.

Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

In a vast region filled with historic châteaux, pre-historic caves, incredible countryside and three beautiful rivers, this is a fantastic area for families with a great variety of activities to appeal to all ages.

Canoeing or kayaking along the river is a wonderful way to spend family time – choose between the Lot or Dordogne rivers or admire the scenery of the picturesque Dropt valley close by.

There are also characterful boat trips along the Dordogne – a ride on a traditional Gabarre boat departing from Bergerac is a lovely way to see the town and surrounding countryside.

Bergerac is also home to a waterpark, Aqua Park, just on the outskirts with pools and slides, as well as a bowling centre and go-karting circuit for less sunny days. Closer to the town, young transport enthusiasts will love Port Miniature where you can hire themed electric boats in a small lake in the summer months. Just north of Bergerac, Lac de Pombonne is a popular spot for summer swimming with its sandy beach and lovely trails for walking and cycling.

Heading east, Parc en Ciel is another superb day out offering tree-top adventure courses, mini golf, a playground, jumping and swimming.

Finally, Château de Bridoire is one of the many historic castles of the area. This one features a great maze, medieval games and other child-friendly activities - a good option for all the family.

Reviews

  • Perfect

    on 01/09/2023

My family and friends stayed at Les Petit Champs the 3rd week of August. The house is a beautiful old rustic property full of beams and tiled/wooden flooring, surrounded by countryside with acres of maize and sunflowers fields to see in the area. Its is beautifully furnished and full of lamps, cushions and books (my vibe).
The location is perfect for exploring the Dordogne and we enjoyed several trips to day and night markets, shopped and ate in local 12th century towns, took wine tasting tours and some golf and spa activities.
When we stayed at the house we had great fun chilling in the pool, enjoying the local food and wine and playing with the inflatables and toys that are accumulated there. There is a BBQ and plenty of outside seating to enjoy and we did make the most of the very hot weather we had (39c) - as much as possible.
The kitchen has every amenity you could want and the bathrooms were a good size and had excellent facilities.
I would recommend this wonderful house to anyone wanting to explore the area and have a large, comfortable base to use and relax in.

  • A wonderful holiday!

    on 01/08/2023

We have spent two relaxing weeks in this lovely house in such a beautiful part of France. The local towns and markets are colourful with delicious cheeses, bread, fruit, olives, nougat and of course the local wines to purchase.
The nearby town, has a lively market on a Monday evening where tables are laid out in the town square and you purchase food to consume on the spot from the many stalls around.
The pool is a great advantage and there is a shady part of the garden which is perfect for eating in and resting when the sun is hot. The house is only half an hour’s drive from Bergerac airport which is far less busy than Bordeaux airport. Altogether a wonderful holiday!

  • A Wonderful Week

    on 31/05/2023

Thank you, for a lovely holiday - three generations on holiday for the first time! We have had a wonderful week - the weather has been glorious - so we have spent most of our time around the pool. We have done some of the most mentioned attractions - the Villereal Saturday market, a few wineries and some of the villages. We've eaten at Le Moderne and Nord-Sud, which were both excellent. The youngest member of the family, Sofia, aged 19 months, has improved her swimming - after being a little scared at first. Hope the summer continues to be hot.

  • Wonderful week

    on 14/09/2022

We spent a wonderful week at Les Petits Champs. It's perfectly situated in the countryside close to the charming town of Villeréal. We had a multigenerational holiday here with 7 adults and 1 child. The pool provided daily entertainment. The kitchen is well equipped, with sharp knives and plenty of equipment that would often not be found in a holiday let. The recently renovated bathrooms are also lovely. There is plenty to do within a short drive - we had a lovely day at Les Jardins Marqueyssac. The child keeps asking when we're going to go back to their "French house" - so they are obviously keen on a return trip!

  • Fab holiday

    on 31/08/2022

We had a fab holiday at Les Petits Champs, perfectly situated in the countryside but just a few minutes’ drive from the nearest town. With 4 adults and 4 kids aged 5 to 9, there was lots to do in the house and the area that suited everyone. Starting with the house, the pool provided daily entertainment; our kids came on so much with their swimming. There was a cupboard jam-packed with English-speaking DVDs and games, the wifi was fast enough for our needs, and there were fans in each room (which was really needed in the 30+ degree heat, especially upstairs). The kitchen had everything you could need, even down to a picnic pack to take to the local Night Market. The beds were all comfortable and the owner had added colourful splashes to the interiors with the soft furnishings. The bathrooms were recently done and it was handy to have two - one with a bath and loo, and the other with a shower and loo. We really enjoyed exploring the area too. There were beautiful ancient towns with fabulous markets you could visit any day. We loved the Lac du Lougratte where we bounced around in the water park, hired SUPs and pedalos. But the highlight for me was canoeing at Limeuil along the River Dordogne - just beautiful.

  • Fab stay

    on 27/08/2022

We've had a fab stay at Les Petits Champs. It's a real treat being based amidst fields yet having Villeréal nearby for its markets and restaurants. The Night Market was awesome - as a party of 8 we arrived at 6.30 and were challenged to find a table big enough, so turn up earlier if you're in the same boat as us. We'd recommend Nord Sud for dinner but try and book a table away from the pizza oven, it was 35 degrees outside and we were melting! We love a market and the best ones were in Issigeac (Monday) and Monpazier (Thursday)... probably in order of preference, too. Our big hits all around were canoeing in Limeuil and two great afternoons at the Lac du Lougratte where there's a giant slide, canoe, pedaloes for hire and best of all and inflatable obstacle course (aged 6+). This all opens at 2pm but you can get onsite to swim in the lake from 10. There are public BBQs too. The pool was awesome but sadly Boris and Cros are showing signs that the end of summer is approaching - pffff! Thank you for all your help. We've been waiting all of the year for this holiday and we've loved every minute.

  • The best time

    on 13/08/2022

Thanks Les Petits Champs for a wonderful, if slightly scorching week! With temperatures reaching 40 degrees, life really did revolve around the pool. The kids (4, 6, 8 & 11) had the best time with the multitude of inflatables we had brought plus Boris and Croc who live here. We also really enjoyed the Sunday market at Issigeac, dinner at l'Atelier and also an amazing day of supping the Dordogne at Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne. It was a long drive to get there but with no current and beautiful vistas it was worth it! One piece of advice is to get meals out booked in advance, we did luck out with random food vans saving our hanger a couple of times! Thanks again!

  • Fantastic break

    on 10/08/2022

We had a fantastic break here - the views and countryside are simply stunning and Les Petits Champs is a wonderful place to stay. We enjoyed days by the pool, trips out to Monflaquin, Bergerac and Beaumont. All beautiful old towns that are full of moments of history around every turn - with exceptional menu de dejeuner too. Villeréal is a grewat town to have a stroll away. Great boulangeries and restaurants and a superb market town. A lovely family holiday and thank you again!

  • Wonderful week

    on 06/08/2022

Thank you for a wonderful week in a beautiful place! We have loved the pool! We played games and read - so relaxing. Hammock area is perfect. Our favourite day trip was to Café des Arts - crepes, ice cream, a gorgeous town and a wonderful host. Thank you and we hope to be back again.

  • Beautiful family holiday

    on 16/07/2022

Beautiful family holiday had by the six of us. 2 adults, 4 children (7, 12, 14, 14). Swimming pool was a hit! We enjoyed rides on Boris the flamingo (previously named by other guests). We enjoyed the morning market in Issigeac on a Sunday morning, along with Monpazier on Thursday mornings (the village is very pretty). We had a wonderful meal at Bassiviere just south of Villaréal. Another was La Moderne. After visiting a local vineyard we went to Le Montecristo - only order the massive steak if you want to feed a village. We didn't concentrate and read the price wrong (a whopping €120 later). However the service and food was lovely.

  • Perfect little holiday cottage for our family

    on 26/08/2021

Les Petits Champs has been the perfect little holiday cottage for our family. It's ideally situated for day trips in the morning to local Bastides, brocantes or river pedaloing (highly recommend the boat hire at Castelmaron-sur-lot!), and then returning after lunch for pool-time until supper! Our 3 kids (6 year old, 4 year old and 2 year old) have become water babies since our arrival and are very sad to be leaving after 2 weeks here. We cannot wait to return! Thank you Les Petits Champs!

  • Great home, kids friendly

    on 10/08/2021

It’s a lovely home, mixing the old charm with modern facilities (kitchen, bathrooms). It truly is a kid friendly home (we stayed with 3 kids under 4) with safety features (secured garden and pool, stairwell) and baby stuff (cots, high chair, cutlery, toys, etc.). The place is relaxing and allows to visit cute villages of the region.

  • A lovely house

    on 05/11/2020

Thanks for a fantastic week. We had a lovely time and beautiful weather, so lots of hours spent playing in the pool. A lovely house, well equipped and the kids enjoyed very much exploring the garden. The local town is a truly beautiful town, some lovely meals in the square and wandering the little streets at night. A great trip, fun times and hope to be back one day soon.

  • Lots of family memories!

    on 31/08/2019

We loved our week in this villa . A fantastic location and we had a fun packed week visiting the Dordogne river, visiting and eating at the local villages which all regularly held markets and other events. Then back to the villa, which has the biggest pool we’ve seen in a holiday home, drinking rose on the hammocks whilst the children played safely in the large enclosed garden with stunning views. Lots of family memories!

  • Fabulous holiday
