Protaras is just one part of what makes Cyprus’ south-eastern coast so special. Along with Cape Greco and Ayia Napa, this corner of the country offers natural beauty, top-notch resort facilities and lots of activity.

The resort itself is big on water-sports and beach life, with lots of good facilities around many of the beaches. You’ll have plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from on the main strip, and Protaras covers all the essentials with supermarkets, pharmacies, ATMs etc. There are family-friendly attractions in the form of the Ocean Aquarium and Star Leisure Mini Golf, which has other fun stuff like dodgems and trampolines too.

Famed for its Blue Lagoon, Cape Greco is a wonderful coastal area. As well as sea caves, the area is full of attractive countryside which is perfect for hiking or just leisurely walks. Various routes have been planned out to show you the best of Cape Greco, such as the Aphrodite Trail.

Many people visit the area for the wonderful beaches which line the coast. Fig Tree Bay has been voted one of the best beaches in Europe, but the likes of Turtle Bay, Green Bay and Konnos Beach give it a good run for its money. If you make the short journey to Ayia Napa, be sure to check out the famous Nissi Beach. With 500m of glorious white sands, this one is very popular so be prepared for it to be busy during the day.

Ayia Napa is known for its clubbing scene, but it’s also a great resort for families, as you will discover at its amusement parks. There are historic and cultural sights too, including a well-preserved 16th-century monastery, the ancient Makronissos Tombs, an intriguing Sculpture Park and the sea-themed Thalassa Museum.

CyHerbia Botanical Park & Labyrinth is a pretty place to enjoy a day out, with lots of fragrant herb gardens, woodlands and a maze. You might also enjoy the peaceful Salt Lake in Larnaca, an important area of wetlands which hosts flamingos and countless other birds. A short drive away, you have the Camel Park, with all sorts of animals including – that’s right – 60 camels.

There’s plenty of historic interest in Larnaca, with the old Turkish Quarter, Archaeological Museum and the landmark Church of Saint Lazarus all well worth a look. The sea views from Larnaca Fort are stunning, and the Kamares Aqueduct just outside the city is an impressive sight at night when its 33 arches are lit up.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages

Younger visitors will get a warm welcome in Cyprus, and there is a lot for them to do. In Protaras, you’ll find stunning beaches, a mini-golf course and an aquarium – as well as opportunities to try water-sports like snorkelling and scuba-diving.
Ayia Napa is always a good bet when you’re travelling with kids. A short drive from Protaras, it’s home to the Parko Paliatso Luna Park, a big amusement park with fairground and theme-park rides that are sure to thrill them. WaterWorld does a similar thing, only wetter – this huge water park is a must for kids and pretty good fun for adults too. For a calming time with the very youngest, try Dolfins Luna Park.
Be sure to visit Cape Greco to see the sea caves and the wonderful Blue Lagoon – a boat trip or Jeep safari are great ways to do it. The wonderfully scenic Cape Greco National Forest Park is perfect for a picnic or nature walk, and there are various trails you can follow.

In Ayia Napa, there’s pirate ship fun on the Black Pearl, a real ship that sets sail from the harbour and promises fun for all the family. A cruise includes a pirate show and lunch. Alternatively, you can take a less swashbuckling trip up the coast, taking in Protaras, Konnos Bay and the fascinating ‘ghost town’ of Famagusta.

If they can’t get enough of the sea, they can learn more about it at the Thalassa Museum. This modern museum’s central exhibit is a life-size replica of an ancient ship which you can view from multiple levels. Budding archaeologists can learn more about the area’s past at the ancient Makronissos Tombs, also in Ayia Napa.

The relaxed city of Larnaca is one not to miss, and it’s got everything that kids love. The big K Max Entertainment Centre is the local hub of family fun, including a multiplex cinema, fast food restaurants and a big indoor playground, Ciokoland. You’ll find it near the Kamares Aqueduct. There’s more indoor playground fun at Fun Factory, and Larnaca’s busy streets and malls are ideal for shopping. If that’s not their thing, the serenity of the peaceful Salt Lake could be just what they need.

Not far from Larnaca, the Camel Park in Mazotos has lots of animals to see, as well as trampolines, a rodeo bull and a swimming pool. If you don’t mind heading further, there are all sorts of other adventure parks and playgrounds around Cyprus, from Nicosia’s Extreme Park to Fasouri Watermania on the southern coast.
