Opatija, by the Kvarner Gulf, 13km west of Rijeka, was the chicest seaside resort for the Austro-Hungarian elite during the days of the Austro-Hungarian empire, as evidenced by the handsome belle epoque villas. It offers wonderful views of the neighbouring islands. The largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea, Istria boasts family-friendly beaches, charming ports, stunning hilltop villages and mouth-watering cuisine that attract visitors from all over the world.

You can stroll down the Opatija Walk of Fame with many great Croatian names honoured. Tennis legend Goran Ivanisevic, genius inventor Nikola Tesla, musician Rade Serbedzija and writer Tin Ujevic and some names on this illustrious street. Why not take a selfie with the ‘Girl with the Seagull’, undoubtedly the most famous statue in Opatija. You can walk the entire 12km promenade between Volosko and nearly Lovran, tranquillity meeting energy at that most magical middle point! You will certainly build up an appetite for a meal in one of the many magnificent Mediterranean restaurants.

From the Opatija Riviera, you can visit the Golden island Krk by boat, firstly visiting the small islet of Kosljun where you can peruse the Franciscan monastery, the greatest cultural and museum centre of Croatia. Meandering through the old town of Krk, you can see Illyrian ramparts, the Frankopan castle and Krk Cathedral. You can also visit Vrbnik, most famous for its widely known white wine Vrbnicka Zlahtina. Why not taste homemade prosciutto and this local wine in a unique local taverna?

At the harbour city of Rijeka, take a walk along the town’s central Korzo promenade and explore its interesting Old Town. If you are up for some incredible panoramic views, be sure to visit the Trsat Castle. The charming, romantic hilltop town of Kastav has immense local heritage from preserving their specific dialect to nurturing the tradition of an ancient carnival known locally as Pust. Take a walk in this enchanting town and explore its many hotspots!

Rijeka Airport is the nearest airport for Opatija. You could also fly to Trieste in Italy. There are direct buses from Trieste bus station to Opatija though we do suggest having a car to enjoy all of the surroundings in this area.

Region

Opatija is a picturesque coastal resort nestled on the northeastern shores of the Adriatic Sea. A charming destination, perfect for those seeking relaxation, elegance, and natural beauty. Opatija's history is rich, its culture diverse, and its scenery breathtaking.

Opatija is a treasure trove of architectural and cultural heritage. Strolling through its streets, you'll encounter a mix of architectural styles, from the grandeur of Austro-Hungarian to the charm of Belle Époque. The town's historical past is brought to life in its iconic landmarks, such as Villa Angiolina, an elegant 19th-century villa that now houses the Croatian Museum of Tourism, and the
Church of St. James, a stunning neo-Romanesque structure.

In the 19th century Opatija gained prominence as a desirable retreat for European aristocracy. Opatija's mild climate and stunning natural surroundings made it a popular destination for the elite. The town was transformed into a sought-after spa and resort destination, and it became a fashionable resort for Europeans, known for its beautiful gardens, grand villas, and splendid promenade.

Opatija's appeal lies not only in its historical charm but also in its stunning natural surroundings. The town is surrounded by lush greenery, rolling hills, and the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea. The mild Mediterranean climate, characterised by warm summers and mild winters, is a key draw for visitors year-round. The town is also blessed with beautifully maintained parks and gardens, such as the Angiolina Park, which showcases a variety of plant species and sculptures, as well as the St.
James Park with its exotic plants and panoramic views of Kvarner Bay.

The 12-kilometer-long coastal promenade - the “Lungomare” - offers stunning vistas of the sea and surrounding islands, making it a favourite spot for leisurely walks. The Lungomare also connects Opatija to neighbouring towns Lovran and Ičići, allowing visitors to explore the beauty of the coastline at their own pace.

Opatija has a noteworthy coffee culture. You can savour your coffee or tea at one of the many cafés along the Lungomare, enjoying the beautiful views and the gentle sound of the sea. It's a cherished part of the Opatija experience.

Opatija hosts a wide range of cultural events throughout the year. From concerts and art exhibitions to festivals celebrating local traditions and international music, the town offers a vibrant cultural scene that caters to a variety of tastes. The Opatija Summer Stage, a popular open-air venue, hosts numerous events during the summer season, including classical concerts and theatre performances.
Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy sailing, diving, and snorkelling in the region’s crystal-clear waters. For hikers and nature lovers, the Učka Nature Park is just a short drive away, and offers rewarding hiking trails that lead to panoramic vistas.

While Opatija itself is a captivating destination, it also serves as an excellent base for day trips to other picturesque places in the region. You can explore nearby towns like Rijeka, Croatia's largest port city, or the historic hilltop town of Mošćenice. Additionally, the islands of Krk and Cres are easily accessible from Opatija and offer stunning landscapes, charming villages, and pristine beaches.

Beautiful villa with a fantastic view of the sea and well equipped. Gladly again! Thanks very much!

  • Great stay!

    on 10/07/2023

We had a great stay here. The villa has everything that is described and even more (e.g. a pool table in the basement).

Pool, Sauna and Whirlpool are great for relaxing.

We were a group of friends and also used the kitchen and the grill to make our own food which works very well.

To get to the supermarkets or restaurants you have to drive to the city (10-15 minutes). The view is great.

  • Highly Recommended!!!

    on 20/09/2021

The house is beautiful, very tastefully decorated and super clean! The view is simply amazing! But you definitely need a car to get to the beaches or the supermarket!

Contact with the landlord was totally uncomplicated, Amir and his wife gave us a very warm welcome. He was there for us in all matters and gave us valuable tips! Thank you for this beautiful week!!!
