In a country full of magnificent coastal gems, Opatija still manages to stand out, shimmering and shining at every turn. Opatija is the Croatian word for abbey, and although the abbey is no longer standing, the incredible Church of St Jacob is a jewel that cannot be missed. Renaissance, Venetian, Gothic, ornate Secession, Baroque, Classicism and Alpine Baroque architecture blends to make this a superb city to walk around. You can easily understand why Opatija has been one of the most popular Croatian cities for sightseeing since the 19th century. The Croatian Walk of Fame makes for an interesting stroll, paying respect to the tennis legend Goran Ivanisevic as well as other famous Croatians. The most famous statue in Opatija is the ‘Girl with a Seagull’. The original now stands in the Croatian Museum of Tourism, but the seaside replacement makes a good photo opportunity. The beautiful promenade stretches for 12km between Volosko and Lovran. The two beloved fountains are dedicated to Helios and Selena, mythical Greek deities of the sun and the moon.

Rijeka is 12km to the west of the villa. It is Croatia’s third largest city and is a bustling blend of Italianate Habsburg grandeur, a busy port and touristic carnival city. You will discover charm, culture, good nightlife and Croatia’s most colourful carnival. Korzo, Rijeka’s busy promenade is wonderful for a stroll, and the lively central market and fish market are hubs of activity. The fish market building is decorated with sculptures of sea creatures, looking almost like a temple of fish. Just next to the fish market you can buy fruit and vegetables at the central market. Rijeka’s City Tower was built in the middle ages. The passage under the tower connects Korzo with the charming Old Town. Rijeka tunnel is among the most recent of the town's attractions. It was built in 1939-1942 by Italians for military purposes. Trsat Castle is very interesting to visit and has a wonderful panorama. There are Blue Flag beaches and plenty of watersports. Ploce Beach is the most popular of the beaches in the north of the city.

The village of Kastav, a charming medieval village north of Rijeka, is perfect for walks and a pleasant coffee or lunch. There are many art workshops and cultural events. South of Rijeka is Bakar which is built like an amphitheatre on a hill. The historical nucleus was declared a cultural monument in 1968. The pedestrian-only Old Town is full of narrow, steep streets, many connected with staircases. Grobnik Castle in Cavle village is among the best-preserved castles in the area.

Region

Opatija is a picturesque coastal resort nestled on the northeastern shores of the Adriatic Sea. A charming destination, perfect for those seeking relaxation, elegance, and natural beauty. Opatija's history is rich, its culture diverse, and its scenery breathtaking.

Opatija is a treasure trove of architectural and cultural heritage. Strolling through its streets, you'll encounter a mix of architectural styles, from the grandeur of Austro-Hungarian to the charm of Belle Époque. The town's historical past is brought to life in its iconic landmarks, such as Villa Angiolina, an elegant 19th-century villa that now houses the Croatian Museum of Tourism, and the
Church of St. James, a stunning neo-Romanesque structure.

In the 19th century Opatija gained prominence as a desirable retreat for European aristocracy. Opatija's mild climate and stunning natural surroundings made it a popular destination for the elite. The town was transformed into a sought-after spa and resort destination, and it became a fashionable resort for Europeans, known for its beautiful gardens, grand villas, and splendid promenade.

Opatija's appeal lies not only in its historical charm but also in its stunning natural surroundings. The town is surrounded by lush greenery, rolling hills, and the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea. The mild Mediterranean climate, characterised by warm summers and mild winters, is a key draw for visitors year-round. The town is also blessed with beautifully maintained parks and gardens, such as the Angiolina Park, which showcases a variety of plant species and sculptures, as well as the St.
James Park with its exotic plants and panoramic views of Kvarner Bay.

The 12-kilometer-long coastal promenade - the “Lungomare” - offers stunning vistas of the sea and surrounding islands, making it a favourite spot for leisurely walks. The Lungomare also connects Opatija to neighbouring towns Lovran and Ičići, allowing visitors to explore the beauty of the coastline at their own pace.

Opatija has a noteworthy coffee culture. You can savour your coffee or tea at one of the many cafés along the Lungomare, enjoying the beautiful views and the gentle sound of the sea. It's a cherished part of the Opatija experience.

Opatija hosts a wide range of cultural events throughout the year. From concerts and art exhibitions to festivals celebrating local traditions and international music, the town offers a vibrant cultural scene that caters to a variety of tastes. The Opatija Summer Stage, a popular open-air venue, hosts numerous events during the summer season, including classical concerts and theatre performances.
Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy sailing, diving, and snorkelling in the region’s crystal-clear waters. For hikers and nature lovers, the Učka Nature Park is just a short drive away, and offers rewarding hiking trails that lead to panoramic vistas.

While Opatija itself is a captivating destination, it also serves as an excellent base for day trips to other picturesque places in the region. You can explore nearby towns like Rijeka, Croatia's largest port city, or the historic hilltop town of Mošćenice. Additionally, the islands of Krk and Cres are easily accessible from Opatija and offer stunning landscapes, charming villages, and pristine beaches.

From its elegant architecture to its lush parks and gardens, from its cultural events to its diverse cuisine, Opatija offers a multifaceted experience for travellers. Whether you're seeking relaxation by the sea, cultural enrichment, or outdoor adventures, Opatija has it all. So, if you're looking for a charming and refined coastal getaway on the Adriatic, Opatija may be your perfect destination.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages

Villa Benke is probably best suited to a group of friends or an extended family. One of the apartments has two bedrooms, and another has a double and a sofa bed, so if you have young children there is only one apartment that is really ideal. However, if you are visiting with grandparents or other families that want some space of their own, then the villa will be perfect.

There is plenty to do with children in this location. Rijeka is a busy town with lovely beaches. The Peek and Poke Computer Museum will be a real hit with ‘techy’ children. The collection spans decades and generations of technology, featuring many working and playable computers and games consoles. Older children might enjoy the Fox in a Box Escape Room in Rijeka. Challenging teamwork will be needed to escape the themed room. Happy Land is the biggest amusement park in Rijeka. It is divided into several sections, a large playroom, a bowling centre with six lanes, a games room with pool tables, air hockey, basketball, simulators and a LaserTag area. It is great fun if you want a change from the beach or the weather isn’t great.

Opatija’s Slatina Beach has the look of a lido with paved areas for sunbathing and steps into the sea. The terraces are semi-circular, which means the sea is lake-calm for swimming and great for families. The pine forest behind offers shade when the sun is too much.  There are so many beaches for children to enjoy and also many boat trips on offer to visit the islands or simply to swim, snorkel or dolphin watch.

Reviews

  • 14 days in Opatija

    on 09/08/2022

We spent 14 days in Opatija. Because the house consists of three apartments (2 for two people each on the upper floor and one for 4 people on the ground floor), everyone could also withdraw once. The view is fantastic and the landlady takes care of everything right away and is very accommodating. The house itself is in immaculate condition and everything is available. In the harbor of Volosko, by the way, you can find excellent restaurants and thus does not necessarily have to cook yourself.

  • Great Vacation

    on 16/08/2021

The accommodation keeps what it promises. The view and the equipment are absolutely top. Everything was clean and well maintained. Despite the large group, everyone could stay in the sufficiently large apartments for themselves. Coming together in the garden and pool was a great vacation experience.

  • Would book again

    on 16/08/2020

The house has 3 self-contained apartments, all great equipped and well thought out. The view is beautiful, the terrace and the pool invite you to relax. The whole complex is very well maintained, the landlords very nice, accommodating and helpful. We felt very comfortable and would book the house again immediately!
