Villa Annika is located in Liznjan, close to the town of Pula. It is the largest city in Istria County, Croatia, and is located at the southern tip of the Istrian peninsula. It’s hard to do justice to Pula, a place of many blessings. Not only will you enjoy the sublime natural beauty of Croatia, which includes its lovely beaches and gorgeous waters, but you’ll find much of historical and cultural interest here too.

The area is known for its ancient Roman architecture – most notably is the Pula Arena, a preserved Roman amphitheatre – during the summer months, festivals are held here so you may wish to attend. You may question whether you’re in Croatia or Italy, although of course the two countries share much in common.

Pula is renowned for its long-standing traditions. Here, shipbuilding, fishing and wine making are staples, as is tourism, and once you visit, you’ll see why. The area is blessed with a mild climate and a gentle sea, making it a family friendly location.

If you’ve come for the sights, the many Roman buildings will transport you back to a distant time. Some key points of interest include the 1st-century AD triumphal arch, the Arch of the Sergii and the Temple of Augustus. You may also wish to see the Twin Gates – one of the few to survive after the city walls were pulled down. You can still see remnants of the old city walls. There’s also the Gate of Hercules which dates from the 1st century.

The city holds an old quarter which is distinctly European for visitors who may have come from further afield – here you’ll find enchanting narrow streets and pretty Medieval and Renaissance buildings.

There are a tremendous number of churches to explore as well as museums, most notably the Archaeological Museum of Istria. You can also take a trip to the Aquarium Pula, which is in fact the largest aquarium in the whole of Croatia, and is rather unusually housed in a fortress, Verudela. The surrounding areas contain fortresses, hill fort settlements and awe-inspiring beauty.

Pula calls a high volume of tourists for a great number of reasons, but it also hosts the nearby Brioni Island, otherwise known as Brijuni national park. For those who enjoy exploring the world beneath the waves, there are many opportunities to dive and fish, and you can partake in a number of wreck dives and explore World War I warships, as well as Roman galleys. The more adrenaline-fuelled may enjoy cliff diving and sailing – there are vast numbers of islands and unspoiled coves to enjoy.

Something else notable about the area? You may be able to track the footprints of dinosaurs on the seashore.

As for Liznjan itself, it’s a small but perfectly formed village with surprisingly high biodiversity. Notably, the church Crkva Majke Božje od Kuj, has a glass floor with a wonderful painting beneath.

If you wish to step back and try something else, there are a number of restaurants, taverns, dolphin excursions, the popular Benazic winery, historic castles and a striking series of tunnels and galleries initially serving as shelters in war.

Region

Pula, located on the southern tip of Croatia's Istrian Peninsula, is a city with a rich history, stunning natural beauty, and a vibrant cultural scene. Exploring the city's old town, you'll find charming narrow streets, historic buildings, and picturesque squares. A stroll through the heart of the city allows visitors to immerse themselves in its unique blend of architectural styles, from Baroque palaces to Venetian facades.

Pula is a city steeped in history, with its roots dating back to Roman times. The most iconic symbol of the city is the Pula Arena, a remarkably well-preserved Roman amphitheater. Built during the 1st century AD, it is one of the six largest surviving Roman arenas in the world and one of Croatia’s most famous sights. Visitors can explore the galleries, stand on the arena floor, and even attend various events, including concerts and festivals held within its ancient walls.

The Istrian Peninsula is known for its stunning coastline, and Pula boasts numerous pristine beaches and coves. One of the most popular spots is Kamenjak, a protected natural park featuring rugged cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and diverse marine life. Nature enthusiasts can hike or cycle through the park's trails and enjoy breathtaking vistas of the Adriatic Sea. The coastal location is also ideal for water-based activities. Scuba diving enthusiasts can explore underwater caves and shipwrecks, while sailing and windsurfing are popular options for those seeking an adrenaline rush.

Just a short drive from Pula, the seaside town of Medulin offers a lovely promenade along the coast. You can take a leisurely walk, rent bicycles, or enjoy an ice cream by the sea. The shallow waters here make it a great spot for kids to play and swim.

For more family-friendly beaches, Verudela, Valkane, and Ambrela are all excellent options, offering playground facilities and water sports for older kids. Verudula beach is the home of Pula Aquarium which features a variety of Adriatic Sea creatures, including fish, seahorses, and various sea plants. The aquarium also has a touch tank, where children can get hands-on with the marine life!

Just a short boat ride from Pula is a collection of islands that make up Brijuni National Park. The park offers a unique combination of untouched nature, diverse flora and fauna, and historical sites. Visitors can explore the enchanting landscapes, visit the safari park, and explore the ruins of Roman villas and ancient churches. The park has golf carts available for touring, making it easily accessible for families with young children.

No visit to Pula is complete without indulging in the flavours of Istrian cuisine. The region is renowned for its truffles, olive oil, and world-class wines. Local restaurants offer a wide array of dishes that incorporate these prized ingredients. Be sure to try traditional Istrian dishes such as fuži (pasta) with truffles, maneštra (a hearty bean soup), and fresh seafood prepared in various ways.

Istria is also famous for its winemaking, and Pula is an excellent starting point for exploring local vineyards. Istrian wines, particularly Malvazija and Teran, are known for their unique character and are often paired with Istrian delicacies, creating a delightful culinary experience.

Whether you're exploring the ancient Roman heritage, relaxing on pristine beaches, or indulging in Istrian cuisine, Pula offers a unique and unforgettable Croatian adventure.

Best Suited For: All Ages

Croatia tops the list for families for so many reasons. It’s safe, has a very welcoming culture, a gorgeous climate and there’s limitless things to do. At your villa, you’re closely positioned to the sea and can enjoy your own pool and table tennis area, ensuring that kids are kept busy. There’s also access to TV, satellite and many peaceful reading or creative areas for introverted children who wish to unwind and let their imaginations loose.  A golf playground is nearby for those who wish to swing a club or two.

Location-wise, you’re utterly spoilt for things to do. Your villa is located in Liznjan, which is a small town in itself, but very close to Pula. You’ll have a springboard to many beautiful beaches – and in Croatia they really are astonishing. There’s a harbour where you can take in the views and enjoy a scrumptious seafood dinner (fresh and delicious), beautiful clear waters for swimming and snorkelling, wonderful beaches where minutes melt into hours, and the architecture is mind-blowing, you’ll find the remains of the Roman’s presence throughout the area. This includes fortresses, statues, ruins and castles.

Children will enjoy a trip to the Roman amphitheatre, and if you visit in summer you may have timed your visit just right with a festival. Set up for tourism, the area is delightful for children thanks to its moderate climate and gentle sea. Safety is secured here.

Many children enjoy the striking sights, and the tales they tell of the areas past. The old quarter will transport families to Italy, and a trip to the Aquarium Pula is far too fun. Set inside a fortress, this is Croatia’s largest aquarium. The views themselves will captivate; rolling hills, stretching sea, formidable fortresses, crumbling ruins and old settlements.

You may also wish to take the children to Brioni Island, go diving, fishing, visit a museum or explore the neighbouring small towns, islands and untainted coves. A sure sell for younger children is that at an undisclosed location, you may be able to track the footprints of dinosaurs along the shore.

Whether your family requires peace and calm, or the buzz of lively activity, it’s all here for you, whether you remain in your villa or explore Croatia’s charm.
